Just a Good Guy

Christopher Pike. For the first captain to be filmed leading the USS Enterprise, Christopher Pike has gotten precious little screen time over the years. That all changed when Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery began on January 17, 2019. Anson Mount’s portrayal of the character who led the mission to Talos IV, pondered retirement with Dr. Boyce, and inspired a young Jim Kirk in the Kelvin timeline reenergized Star Trek and fans. His presence was so well received that, just over three years later, an entire new series is about to premier with Mount’s Pike at the helm. In preparation for the start of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, we're pleased to announce the launch of this new podcast, Saddle Up! In this first episode, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss Christopher Pike, the character as we've seen him in The Original Series, the Kelvin films, and Discovery, and how we think he may be portrayed in Strange New Worlds. We also talk about the prospects for the new series overall, some of the aesthetic and crew choices, and, most importantly, our hope that, wherever our mission take us, we'll have a little fun, make a little noise, and ruffle a few feathers. Deep Space Nine Season 5 - Essential Trek Philosophy. When people think of ethics in Star Trek, they often think primarily of ethical dilemmas, such as balancing the greater good of one group of people with the greater good of another group of people, or juxtaposing the rights of particular individuals with the common good. But season 5 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine takes a different approach to its exploration of ethics, using dramatic situations to explore not merely ethical dilemmas, but also ethically praiseworthy or blameworthy character traits of various Starfleet and non-Starfleet characters. When Star Trek made the jump to the big screen in 1979, it was important to the filmmakers that Star Trek: The Motion Picture was not just a big episode of the television show. It had to be a MOVIE. In order to reinforce this concept, Oscar winner Jerry Goldsmith was hired to compose the film's music. Commentary: Trek Stars 40: Room Temperature Sweat

Matheson, Part 6: Ride the Nightmare. After a string of SF/horror stories, Richard Matheson returned to the crime genre with his sixth novel, Ride the Nightmare. The book tells the story of a family whose life is turned upside down when some characters from his shady past come to seek revenge. This week, Max and Mike are joined by research librarian Tony Powers to discuss the novel as well as Matheson’s own adaptation for an episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and legendary James Bond director Terence Young’s film version, Cold Sweat. We discuss the book as a precursor to popular works such as Reservoir Dogs and 24, Matheson’s ability to adapt his own work for the screen, and how the movie was altered to act as a starring vehicle for Charles Bronson. We also touch on Matheson’s seventh novel, The Beardless Warriors.

Obsessed: Star Trek Continues and the Mirror Universe. Star Trek Continues recently released their third episode "Fairest of Them All," which is a direct follow-up to the Original Series episode "Mirror, Mirror." It tells the story of what happened when the mirror landing party returned to the ISS Enterprise. The attention to detail in set design, costumes, lighting, and even framing of shots is so meticulous that it is easy to forget that you're watching something shot in 2014, not 1967. While the onscreen story is intriguing, what is equally fascinating is everything that happened offscreen to make "Fairest of Them All" possible. Commentary: Trek Stars 84: Waiting for Gadot

Black II: Wonder Woman. Over the past 50 years, there have been many successful comic book adaptations for both the big screen and small. But for some reason, the one marquee character which has failed to break through to the mainstream is Wonder Woman. Many writers have tried, with varying results. And the very first of these was Star Trek writer and producer, John D.F. Black. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Max and Mike take a look at Black's 1974 Wonder Woman pilot, which starred Cathy Lee Crosby, and directly preceded the successful 1975 series starring Lynda Carter. We discuss the origins of the character, how Black's pilot rates among other adaptations, and whether or not current creators are on the cusp of a breakthrough with the character. We also ponder why comic book readers are generally unaccepting of the character.
