We're used to talking about the Federal Reserve changing "benchmark interest rates." But the mechanics of how the central bank actually tightens or loosens policy are a lot more nuanced. For years now, the Fed's been doing this through the federal funds market — where US banks lend and borrow their excess reserves. But that could be changing. Last week, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan argued that the fed funds target is outdated, and the central bank should be looking at alternatives. So what would those alternatives actually look like, and why do the intricacies of these short-term funding markets actually matter? Any investor looking to do a deep dive interview into the macro fractures underpinning global markets over the last year, would have gotten the best takes from Odd Lotts over the last 2 years, early enough to milk the alpha before the markets proved them - China, crypto, supply chain, monetary policy, etc.
Good interviewees, weak hosts

Tracy and Joe are usually not challenging the assertions of guests. They cover too much in too short a time and don’t get into details. They do not pause to appreciate, investigate or test dramatic and shaky claims, and fail to highlight moral assumptions. e.g in “talking mmt” with Cullen Roche, guest was saying things like “capitalism manages inflation via a buffer of unemployment”, which is almost a quote from Karl Marx. Hosts didn’t pause to reflect on the collectivist worldview behind that statement. Another example, in an episode on the future with nirp, the guest was making very sweeping and speculative predictions about changes to worldwide economic regimes, and there was apparently no time or interest to get into any details or challenge anything he said.
