MATEKHET - A Machine Music Podcast - Ep. 4 - Church of Authenticity

MATEKHET - A Machine Music Podcast - Ep. 4 - Church of Authenticity

In this episode we revisit the interview with hardcore/post-hardcore legend Ian MacKaye (Ep. 3) and introduce a new context into the discussion of authenticity and "realness" in hardcore - the shift in spirituality and religiosity in 17th and 18th century England and the United States. We pivot away from a discussion of authenticity in terms of exposing truth or "feeling real" toward a discussion of an authenticity of "mystery," including a snippet from a recent interview with Kristoffer Rygg of Norwegian experimental band Ulver.

Closing Track - An Isolated Mind - "Afraid of Dissonance" (2019).

Our discussion of the concept of “authenticity” in heavy music continues with a brand-new interview with the legendary Ian MacKay (Minor Threat, Teen Idles, Embrace, Fugazi, The Evens, Coriky, Dischord Records). We discuss the various forms authenticity has taken in punk and hardcore, and what Ian considers to be “real” music.

    MATEKHET - A Machine Music Podcast - Ep. 2 - Sonic Authenticity.

Continuing down the path of "authenticity" in metal and extreme music we revisit an interview with Johannes Persson (Cult of Luna), and dissect SUMAC's monolithic song "Thorn in the Lion's Paw" via Clement Greenberg's critique of abstract expressionism and Charles Peirce philosophy of language. MATEKHET - A Machine Music Podcast - Ep. 1 - AUTHENTICITY IN EXTREME MUSIC

MATEKHET - A Machine Music Podcast - Ep. 1 - AUTHENTICITY IN EXTREME MUSIC

In this episode we explain the rationale and motivation behind the MATKHET podacst, and introduce our first topic of discussion: "authenticity." We touch on the different kinds of authenticity, the centrality of "authentic" emotion and expression in metal and hardcore, and include clips that expand on those issues from past interviews with Greg Anderson (Sunn O))), Goatsnake, Burning Witch, Southern Lord Recordings) and Aaron Weaver (Wolves in the Throne Room).
