Rene Haas, Arm CEO: AI demand won’t slow

“Let's go back to the timeframe with the internet building out. We didn’t have an issue that the internet 20 years later is not a valuable utility… If you don't have access to a smartphone, try to get into a sporting event or a concert - it’s not going to happen. That's the internet at its backbone. So artificial intelligence will be the same. It's going to be table stakes for everything that we do. We may see a short-term bump in the road or some pause or whatever you want to call it, and then people will freak out and say ‘AI's dead’, which is complete nonsense because it's only going to get better from here and it's going be a greater utility. So I don't worry about it too much.” Faisal Islam speaks to Rene Haas, CEO of UK-based computer chip firm Arm Holdings, about the current boom in the industry being driven by the growth of AI and data centres. Although some people may not be familiar with the Arm name, their silicon chips are present almost everywhere - from smartphones all the way up to supercomputers. Founded in the early 1990s, the firm began its life operating out of an old turkey barn in the English countryside near Cambridge. As technology shrank and became increasingly mobile, Arm, whose main focus is the design of efficient chips, positioned themselves at the heart of the tech revolution. It is now mostly owned by a large Japanese tech investment group and their chips can be found in almost every part of modern life - from smartphones and cameras through to cars and supercomputers. With the AI revolution continuing apace, analysts have said that Arm will have a key role to play in the coming years. The One Thing That Could Decide If AI Takes Your Job - Ft. Luis Garicano

AI is coming for your job; AI isn't coming for your job. Economist Luis Garicano thinks both camps are asking the wrong question.  In Messy Jobs: The Work That AI Cannot Reach, Garicano and co-authors Jin Li and Yanhui Wu argue that all knowledge work varies along a dimension of “messiness”, and that the jobs which survive won't be the ones that are hardest, but the messiest. Bethany McLean and Luigi Zingales press Garicano on where that framework holds and where it breaks.  Connect with us: 📺 Subscribe to our YouTube Channel 📱 Follow Capitalisn’t on Instagram & TikTok ✉️ Email your questions and comments to capitalisntpod@gmail.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ayo Gorkhali! The Fierce Fighters, Their Nepal Legacy And A China Angle | In Our Defence, Ep 60

Join "Def-Savvy" Abhishek Bhalla and host Dev Goswami as they delve into the reports suggesting Beijing's interest in recruiting Nepal's renowned Gorkhas into the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA). The Indian Army's routine intake of the Gorkhas came to a halt after the Agnipath scheme was introduced. So, what factors contribute to the desirability of Gorkhas in the military forces of various nations, including China, India, and Pakistan, during times of conflict? How does the demographic composition of the Gorkha regiment, with a majority of soldiers from Nepal and a significant portion from India, influence the dynamics and demand for Gorkhas in different military alliances? Considering China's growing influence in Nepal, what potential consequences could arise if China successfully attracts Gorkhas away from their traditional military alliances, particularly with India, and how? Kargil War 25 years later: Recalling the hits & misses | In Our Defence, S02, Ep 33

It’s been 25 years since the Kargil war. We delve into the factors behind India's victory and the major intelligence failures that caused the conflict. The critical lapse was the intelligence oversight that allowed Pakistani forces to occupy high positions unchallenged, particularly due to inadequate surveillance during winter months. We address pertinent questions: What major intelligence failures led to the Kargil War? How did young officers contribute to India's victory? What were the key recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee, and why were they not fully implemented? How can India improve its defence readiness based on lessons from the Kargil War? Host Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor analyse these points through personal experiences, factual recounting, and evaluations of military strategies and institutional reforms. They also discuss the Indian Air Force's operations during Operation Safed Sagar, highlighting the challenges of high altitude and the adaptation of Mirage aircraft with imported munitions. • India's Warship Boom Is Hiding a Bigger Problem |S3| Ep 55

India's Warship Boom Is Hiding a Bigger Problem |S3| Ep 55

India appears to be in the middle of a naval shipbuilding boom. Destroyers, frigates, submarines, anti-submarine vessels and support ships are entering service with striking regularity. But commissioning ceremonies tell us what India decided to build years ago. They do not necessarily tell us what is being ordered for the 2030s and 2040s. In this season finale episode of In Our Defence, host Dev Goswami and national security expert Sandeep Unnithan examine how the Indian Navy became unusually capable of designing, integrating and supervising the construction of its own warships. The two decode the Navy's alphabet soup of Project 15B, Project 17A, Project 75I, Project 76 and the proposed next-generation programmes. The two also ask whether India risks losing the continuous production rhythm required to build complex destroyers, frigates and submarines. Smaller vessels may keep shipyards occupied, but can they preserve the skills and supply chains needed for the next generation of frontline combatants? And finally, the two get to the larger strategic argument: what kind of Navy does India actually want? Should it focus on controlling the waters close to home, dominate key parts of the Indian Ocean, operate from Africa to Southeast Asia, or develop a more expeditionary force? Does India need a third aircraft carrier or would submarines, escorts, maritime aircraft and unmanned systems provide greater value? Because before India decides which ships to build, it must decide what it expects its Navy to do. Tune in! Produced by Taniya Dutta Sound mixed by Aman Pal

India's AI Ambitions and the Road to Viksit Bharat | AI Summit Special

This is the final episode of our special series on the India AI Impact Summit, examining the conversations, decisions, and debates that are shaping global AI governance. This episode explores: India has a clear North Star in Viksit Bharat 2047, but what will it actually take to get there and what role does AI play? Should India focus on diffusing AI or building its own frontier research capability, and is that even the right way to frame the question? What did the working group on AI for Economic Growth and Social Good set out to do, and what is the Global AI Impact Commons designed to deliver? From skilling to last mile delivery, what stands between a great AI solution built in Bangalore and the farmer or district hospital that could benefit from it? Debjani pushes back early on one of the most debated questions in India's AI conversation. The framing of frontier research versus diffusion, she says, is simply the wrong debate. India needs to do both. Without the machinery to convert its own data into intelligence, India would be diffusing imported intelligence, with no guarantee that the channel will always remain open. Building that machinery, while simultaneously deploying AI at scale, is not a choice. It is a necessity. On the working group, the most important conversation was not about technology at all. It was about the human being. Every country in the room was still trying to figure out how to unlock AI's impact at population scale, and the group's key insight was that the world does not yet have a common standard for what impact even means. The Global AI Impact Commons, launched at the summit with over 80 stories from more than 30 countries, is designed to change that, giving countries a shared repository of real world success stories to learn from and replicate. Her advice for getting AI to the last mile draws directly from India's DPI experience. None of the platforms that reached population scale, not Aadhaar, not UPI, started with the technology. They started with the problem. The best AI, she says, is the AI that is invisible. People should not have to think about it. And that principle, starting grassroots up, keeping it simple, and keeping the human at the center, is what India's AI builders need to take forward. Every two weeks, Interpreting India brings you diverse voices from India and around the world to explore the critical questions shaping the nation's future. We delve into how technology, the economy, and foreign policy intertwine to influence India's relationship with the global stage. As a Carnegie India production, hosted by Carnegie scholars, Interpreting India, a Carnegie India production, provides insightful perspectives and cutting-edge by tackling the defining questions that chart India's course through the next decade. Stay tuned for thought-provoking discussions, expert insights, and a deeper understanding of India's place in the world. Rucho v. Common Cause

The hosts reflect on the Amy Coney Barrett confirmation hearings, then move on to discussing gerrymandering, the practice of drawing up voting districts to favor a particular political party. Specifically, they talk about Rucho v. Common Cause, a 2019 case in which the Supreme Court not only refused to rule on two states’ gerrymandered maps, they found all partisan gerrymandering to be outside the purview of the Court going forward.    Follow Peter (@The_Law_Boy), Rhiannon (@AywaRhiannon), and Michael (@_FleerUltra) on Twitter.    Please support our sponsors:    BuyRaycon.com/FIVEFOUR   HelixSleep.com/FIVEFOUR Hosted on Acast.
