ACT's new deputy, the Conservation Amendment Bill, Teaching Council changes, and poll results w/ the ACT Party's Simon Court: 29th June, 2026

After significant pressure from the public and environmental lobby groups, the government has dropped the clause in the Conservation Amendment Bill that would permit the sale of more conservation land.  They say the decision is due to some confusion from members of the public, with the wording leading different interpretations than the initial intention.  Also last week, the government finalised plans to ban elected members from the Teaching Council, the body that regulates and ensures accountability for teachers. The decision followed an inquiry which found the organisation was more concerned with reputation than maintaining standards. Despite the issues, however, there are concerns that completely cutting elected officials out will limit the board’s independence. Also on ACT’s agenda are recent poll results, which have seen Opportunity climbing close to the FIVE percent threshold to get into parliament. Parties such as ACT and Te Pāti Māori are particularly under threat from Opportunity, as it threatens to take their place in a potential coalition agreement.  Finally, over the weekend the ACT Party announced plans for MP Nicole McKee to take over as deputy leader from Brooke van Velden as she plans to resign at this year’s election.  For this week’s catch-up with the ACT Party’s Simon Court, News director Castor asked about each of these issues, beginning with Nicole McKee’s recent appointment.
