It comes from the German language, where it means, literally, “Health!” In German it is used as the equivalent of the English, “God bless you” or “bless you.” In my experience, that’s about the only time I ever hear anyone intentionally blessing another. We talk a lot about God’s blessing. We bless others by our service and acts of charity. But the art of blessing others with touch and words is all but dead. Most people have never known the consistent presence of someone speaking blessing over them. The need for blessing is real, but we don’t know what we’ve been missing until we experience it. The Bible starts with God creating a beautiful world and saying that it’s very good. For a book that starts out happy, it gets dark quickly. By chapter three, the humans have decided to rebel against God and choose for themselves what’s right and wrong. By chapter four, a young man named Cain gets jealous of his brother, Abel, because God prefers Abel’s sacrifice—and so he takes his brother out in a field and murders him. The book of Acts tells us that Christians were devoted to these gatherings: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common.” (Acts 2:42-44, NIV) Again, Scripture also tells us that they would meet publicly and from house to house. “You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.” (Acts 20:20, NIV) Listen for more... I think it is good for the soul to regularly be in situations where you are reminded of your own inadequacy and the adequacy of others. I’m a college administrator and professor. I have a terminal degree. This makes me useful for certain tasks and absolutely useless in others. I’m always reminded of this when I gather with friends who are discussing repairs they’ve done to their vehicles or renovations they’ve done to their homes. “You did that?! Like, by yourself?! How many YouTube videos did you have to watch?!” It’s easy to be insecure about this, but it’s healthier to recognize that not everyone is good at everything and we need each other.
