Should we pay more for chocolate?

How often do you eat chocolate? It's one of the most loved sweet treats in Europe, but a new EU law could make chocolate more expensive. A business owner, who has small cocoa farms in these places, shares their thoughts and concerns about the new law. We also hear from chocolate lovers about whether they would pay more for their favourite chocolate, and about whether they looked at where their chocolate was produced. Neil and Becca discuss this and teach you some new vocabulary. Read along with this podcast with the free transcript, and practise the vocabulary using the quiz and worksheet: https://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/6-minute-english_2026/ep-260312 Improve your speaking confidence and skills with our series 'Beating Speaking Anxiety': https://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/beating_speaking_anxiety Subscribe to our newsletter for our weekly highlights: https://www.bbc.co.uk/send/u178220599 and feel free to email us at learningenglish@bbc.co.uk!

#367 I Have a Big Confession to Make

We'll be looking at the popular subreddit r/Confessions and for each story, I'll be sharing my own views on what this person should have done and giving them advice. While giving advice, I'll be using some useful structures that you can use in your English too. Of course, we also learn a lot of bonus vocabulary that comes up in each story as well. If you wait around to the end, you'll even hear a couple of my own confessions where I talk about some bad things I've done (and still do!) #1 How to Get a British Accent

What you can do to get a British accent. Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast1 Become a Level Up Member - https://levelupenglish.school Transcript - https://levelupenglish.school/transcripts (Members Only)  How to Learn British Pronunciation Introduction There are countless British accents in England, let alone in the whole world.Don’t worry too much about accents. Everyone has one (even native speakers) and it should be a badge of pride to show where you come from. However: Reasons to want a British accent:To be more respected at workTo stop being treated like an outsiderTo impress your friends!British accents have a few things in common which we’ll look at later General Advice Get the foundations right when you start so you don’t cement your mistakes, but change will come over time.Watch lots of British TV shows, movies, and of course podcastsTalk with native speakers and try to mimic their pronunciationGetting a teacher would be even better because they can correct your mistakesIt takes a long time, and many people don’t begin to develop their accent fully until they reach an advanced level, don’t give up! Specific Advice Shadowing - repeat words from phrases you hear. Pay attention to vowel sounds.Watch your mouth in a mirror Pay attention to your tongue positionL - tongue touches top teethR - tongue moves back in mouth, not touchingLearn stress I recommend https://forvo.com/ for pronunciation and https://www.merriam-webster.com/ for a dictionary. PreSENT / PREsentSUSpect / susPECTRecord yourself and listen back Specific Sounds T sound - Very strongButter, BetterR sound - Not so strongCar, Park, Hair, Hard, Ear American vs British AdvertIZEment (USA) / AdverTISSment (UK)The ILE sound is different. MoBLE (USA) / MoBILE (UK)Words ending in "ation". Organisation I recommend this poem called The Chaos by Gerard Nolst Trenité This poem shows the irregularities in English pronunciation. Try it for fun! It's very difficult though. Recap: Having an imperfect accent isn’t the end of the world. We each have our own and should be proud of it. However, there's nothing wrong with wanting to improve, so I hope this helped. ➡️ Join the Free Mini Course - https://www.levelupenglish.school/mini ⭐️ Join Level Up English - https://www.levelupenglish.school Become a member and get: Podcast Transcripts Private Podcast Group Classes Private Coaching And over 500 online lessons! ➡️ Join the Free Mini Course - https://www.levelupenglish.school/mini ⭐️ Join Level Up English - https://www.levelupenglish.school Become a member and get: Podcast TranscriptsPrivate PodcastGroup ClassesPrivate CoachingAnd over 500 online lessons!
