Baroness Shami Chakrabarti

We're joined by prominent human rights activist and barrister, Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, someone who barely needs an introduction owing to the many high profile roles and cases that she's undertaken in her career - a true world-leading figure in human rights and law. We discuss the creation and inception of the highly controversial Covert Human Intelligence Sources Act (CHIS Act), a law which gives immunity to agents of the state, as well as the growth of 'child spies'. There's a great deal to unpick in this discussion and we're lucky that Baroness Shami is able to walk us through it. Shami and a collection of UK politicians went above and beyond in attempts to water this bill down, and it is now an act, making it an official law. It's been described a 'dystopian'. So what's the story? We're also joined by Neil Woods, many regular podcast listeners will know Neil, he's a former undercover operative who now advocates for a raft of reforms in efforts to make our communities fairer and safer. Neil also took part in the CHIS Act discussions and briefings, so we get to hear from both Shami and Neil about the backstory and ultimately what this now all means. Luckily for you I decided against singing that in the intro to this episode, but I'm VERY excited to say that today is the day that Say Why to Drugs the book launches in the UK, and online. It's taken me the last 2 years to write, and so it's such a weird and lovely feeling for it to be finally available for you to read. Or to listen to! I've recorded the audiobook, which is also released today, and the lovely people at Hodder and Stoughton have said I can share a few excerpts with you all! So we have an amazing Foreword written by none other than Scroobius PIp - he goes in to detail about how the podcast came to be, how he and I ended up working together on it, and generally being very lovely and flattering and supportive, thanks Pip. We're on our third episode already! On this edition of Stop and Search we're loosely framing it around drugs in film, books, television, and culture... well, that was the idea, but when you get a group of witty and intelligent people in a room, talking about drugs, it takes many twists and turns. On the panel we have:- Actor and comedian, Rufus Hound- Writer and musician, JS Rafaeli, - Our very own LEAP UK Chairman and former undercover drugs cop, Neil Woods. JS Rafaeli has written Neil Woods' memoir 'Good Cop, Bad War' which is out on August 18th. We go into why JS was so inspired as to write Neil's story... and of course, we chat with Neil himself on his own story: What goes on at street level policing to change the mind of an undercover drugs cop who now campaigns to legalise and regulate all drugs? Rufus Hound provides a great voice of commonsense. Having previously worked with LEAP UK's Executive Director (and Stop and Search's host) Jason Reed on the Oscar longlisted documentary The Culture High, Rufus returns to the drugs discussion and takes a swipe at many overlapping aspects of this social policy.
