Get 15% off OneSkin with the code MARIANA at https://www.oneskin.co/MARIANA #oneskinpod James McGibney is the man who took down Hunter Moore, the "King of Revenge Porn" behind the notorious site Is Anyone Up. He infiltrated Moore's operation, bought the site out from under him for less than $15,000, and turned it into an anti-bullying platform. That story became the hit Netflix documentary The Most Hated Man on the Internet. But that was more than a decade ago. Today James, a former Marine and cybercrime investigator, is going after something much bigger and much darker. In this episode of The Hidden Third, Mariana Van Zeller sits down with James to talk about his current investigation into two loosely connected online networks called The Com and 764. The Com is a sprawling group of mostly young people, some as young as 15 and 16, who trade stolen data, run crypto scams that have drained hundreds of millions of dollars from ordinary people, swat their enemies, and in some cases prey on underage girls. 764 is the offshoot that has captured the FBI's attention for coercing minors into producing sexual and self-harm content, sometimes pushing them to suicide. James walks Mariana through how he traced these networks from low-level "script kiddies" all the way up to what he calls the head of the snake in Pakistan. Along the way he uncovered a billionaire's son who allegedly trafficked a 16-year-old girl into Miami and beat her on tape, a teenage girl who laughed on a recorded call as her crypto scam victim killed himself, and a group of young men flashing quarter-million-dollar nights at Miami clubs while underage girls walked past bouncers uncarded. The conversation moves through the sextortion crisis pushing American teenagers to suicide before their parents ever find out, why crypto scams have quietly surpassed drug trafficking as the most profitable criminal enterprise in the world, and somewhat of a disagreement between Mariana and James over cheaters.com and the question of who the bully actually is when you publicly out someone for cheating. It also goes somewhere personal. James opens up about his own childhood in foster care and about watching his foster sister be sexually abused. He talks about why every case he takes on today, he takes on for her. There is a lot more in this one. A guy in Texas moving faster than the FBI because subpoenas take months and he doesn't. Living armed, with private security at the house, because that is now the cost of doing this work. An ISIS hit list. More than a thousand death threats sitting in his Instagram inbox right now. And a very simple explanation of why you should never, ever connect to the free Wi-Fi at your hotel. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • In conversation with Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation

    Season 1 Bonus

In conversation with Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation

The last few months have been a turning point. In late March, New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez won his case against Meta, with a jury finding that Facebook and Instagram's parent company had engaged in "unconscionable" trade practices targeting children. Days later, a California jury ruled that Meta and YouTube had addicted a young girl to their platforms. And Australia is now four months into its landmark social media ban for kids under 16. At the center of this movement is social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, whose New York Times bestseller The Anxious Generation laid out the case for a phone-free childhood. What once read as provocation is now policy: France and Malaysia have passed their own bans, and Canada and the US are weighing similar moves. But many researchers — and young people themselves — aren't convinced. Ava Smithing argues that social media companies need to reimagine their business models entirely, not just lock kids out. In this live conversation from Columbia University's Bollinger Forum, Haidt and Smithing meet across the generational and ideological divide. They dig into Haidt's "Great Rewiring" theory, the toll of "attentional destruction," and the tension between protecting children and honoring the reality of Gen Z's digital-first communities. Editor's note: We are also honoured to inform you that Left To Their Own Devices was just nominated for a prestigious Peabody Award. "We are grateful and honored to receive a Peabody nomination. We created Left to Their Own Devices to shine a light on the experiences of young people online," said Ava Smithling, host of Left To Their Own Devices. "We believe these stories deserve to be heard, and more importantly, to be believed. A Peabody nomination validates our work and recognizes the gravity of the harm these platforms inflict on young people. This recognition makes our team's work and the fight for safer online community spaces harder to ignore."

When Frontier Science Enters Mainstream Journals: Energy Healing Cancer Study Update | Talk Tracks

In Season 2 of The Consciousness Cassettes, Ky explored a groundbreaking study at MD Anderson Cancer Center examining energy healing, also known as biofield therapy, in pancreatic cancer cells and mice. Now, that research has officially been published. Ky returns to the study with integrative oncologist Dr. Santosh Rao and Meredith Sprengel, Research and Program Director of the Subtle Energy Funders Collective. Together, they unpack the study’s most compelling findings, including slower cancer cell growth, reduced invasiveness, and significantly fewer visible liver metastases in some of the mouse experiments. Together they go behind the scenes of the scientific process to examine why frontier research can be so difficult to fund, study, and publish, especially when its proposed mechanism does not fit neatly within the current scientific paradigm. What does peer review actually involve? Why was the paper withdrawn shortly before publication by one journal? And what will it take to move energy healing research forward? The publication gives scientists something concrete to replicate, challenge, and build upon, inviting us all to approach the unexplained as open-minded skeptics. _______ Learn more about the MD Anderson Cancer Center research and find the full research publication by visiting our non-profit partner PhenomenaHealing.com/MDAndersonResearch _______ Join The Telepathy Tapes Backstage Pass to get ad-free episodes, never-before-heard interviews, behind-the-scenes documentary footage, and access to our private Discord community. Chris Hansen: Why To Catch a Predator Really Ended

Chris Hansen joins Andrew Gold on Heretics to go inside To Catch a Predator: the confrontations, the excuses, and the discovery that changed everything about one suspect’s sob story. With Robert Pattinson playing Hansen in A24’s upcoming film Primetime, hear from the real man behind “Have a seat”. From the original Dateline NBC investigations to Takedown with Chris Hansen, we explore how the stings work, why suspects who refuse to speak to police will talk to Chris, and why men who recognise the show still walk through the door. Hansen discusses his Roblox investigation, his concerns about child safety online, and the disturbing cases involving people in positions of trust. What happens before he steps into the room—and how does he know when to intervene? Andrew challenges Chris on entrapment and the uncomfortable relationship between justice and entertainment. Chris also gives his account of the Texas prosecutor’s death, explains why he believes To Catch a Predator ended, and revisits the infamous pizza encounter with Jeff Sokol.
