The Woman At The Well

What is the “living water” Jesus offers? In John 4:1-26, Jesus crosses deep social barriers to meet a Samaritan woman at a well — and offers her “living water.” In this study, Dr. Toby Holt shows how Jesus seeks and satisfies thirsty souls. Jews and Samaritans despised one another, and this woman came alone at midday, an outcast even among her own people. Yet Jesus speaks with her, asks her for a drink, and offers her water that ends all thirst — “a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” He gently exposes her broken past, then reveals Himself as the promised Messiah. Dr. Holt notes that, like Solomon who had everything yet found it all empty, this woman’s soul was dry until she met the One who could truly fill it. Questions this study answers: 1. Hope (Your Story Ends Well)

Is there hope after losing someone you love? In 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul comforts grieving believers — not by denying their sorrow, but by anchoring it in hope. In this sermon, Dr. Toby Holt brings tender, biblical encouragement to grieving hearts. Questions this sermon answers: 1. Is it wrong for Christians to grieve? No. Grief is natural and right. Pilate's Interrogation Of Jesus

What is truth? "What is truth?" Pilate asked Jesus that question and walked away without waiting for the answer. In John 18:28-40, Dr. Toby Holt examines the trial of Jesus before the Roman governor. The Jewish leaders bring Jesus to Pilate because only Rome could carry out an execution. Pilate questions Him about being a king, and Jesus answers, "My kingdom is not of this world." The two talk past each other — one of eternal truth, the other of politics. Finding no guilt, Pilate offers to release a prisoner, but the crowd demands Barabbas. The guilty goes free; the innocent is condemned. Questions this study answers: 1. Who was Pilate? The Roman governor of Judea, responsible for order. He found no crime in Jesus but lacked the courage to release Him. 2. Why did the leaders bring Jesus to Pilate? Only Rome could authorize an execution, and a quiet stoning was too risky at Passover. What It Means To Be Born Again

What does it mean to be "born again"? In John 3:1-17, a respected leader named Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night and hears puzzling words: "You must be born again." Dr. Toby Holt explains the new birth — and why we cannot do without it. Nicodemus was a Pharisee and ruler, yet Jesus tells even him he must be born again. We are born spiritually dead and cannot give ourselves new life — the new birth is God's own work. Out of this talk comes the most famous verse in the Bible. Questions this study answers: 1. Alone In The Dark (Chapter 2)

Was the great fish God's judgment or His rescue? In Jonah 2, Jonah prays from inside the belly of a great fish. Dr. Toby Holt asks whether that fish was God's punishment — or His surprising means of rescue. Having fled from God and been thrown into the sea, Jonah should have drowned. Instead, God sends a great fish to swallow him — not to destroy, but to save. God sometimes uses dreadful circumstances to bring a stubborn heart to repentance. From the darkness, Jonah remembers the Lord, turns from idols, and declares: "Salvation is of the LORD." Questions this study answers: 1. Was the fish judgment or mercy? It was mercy. The Omnipotence (Power) Of God

Just how powerful is God? In Psalm 2, the nations rage against God — and He simply laughs. In this study on God's attributes, Dr. Toby Holt explores the omnipotence, or all-power, of God. Earthly rulers conspire against the Lord and His Anointed, but God, enthroned in heaven, is utterly unthreatened. "Omnipotent" means God can do anything He wills, though He cannot act against His own nature. He has set His King — His Son — on His holy hill, and that King will rule over all. The wise response is to trust the Son. Questions this study answers: 1. What does God's power look like in the face of rebellion? Unshaken. While rulers plot, God remains enthroned and in complete control. Their defiance changes nothing. 2. Why does the psalm say God laughs at earthly rulers? God Responds To Job

What was God’s answer to Job? In Job 38-40, after chapters of silence, God finally answers Job — but not in the way anyone expects. In this study, Dr. Toby Holt explores how God responds to a suffering man’s questions. God speaks to Job out of a whirlwind, but He never explains why Job suffered. Instead, He asks Job question after question about creation: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” From the stars to the storehouses of snow to the wild animals, God shows the vast gap between His knowledge and ours. Dr. Holt sums it up in a line his seminary professor once wrote on the board: “There is a God, and you are not Him.” Job is humbled, and lays his hand over his mouth. We may bring God our questions, but we are not fit to judge His wisdom. Questions this study answers: 1. How did God answer Job? Not with an explanation of his suffering, but with questions about creation that revealed how little Job truly knew. God answered Job’s “why” with His own greatness. 2. Feed My Sheep (Christ's Words To Peter)

Can Jesus restore you after you fail Him? Yes. In John 21:15-19, the risen Jesus meets Peter — who had denied Him three times — and gently restores him. Dr. Toby Holt shows that failure is not the end for those Jesus loves. Over a breakfast on the shore, Jesus asks Peter three times, "Do you love Me?" — one for each denial. Each time Peter says yes, Jesus gives a charge: feed My lambs, tend My sheep, feed My sheep. Love shows itself in faithful service. Jesus then foretells Peter would one day die for Him, and closes: "Follow Me." Questions this study answers: 1. Why did Jesus ask Peter the same question three times? Two Sons, Two Roads

Can you earn your way into God’s family? No. In Galatians 4:21-31, the Apostle Paul uses the story of Abraham’s two sons to show that we are saved by God’s promise, received through faith — never by our own effort. In this study, Dr. Toby Holt unpacks the surprising lesson. Abraham had two sons. Ishmael was born through human scheming, when Sarah grew tired of waiting on God’s promise. Isaac was born later, exactly as God had promised. Paul uses these two sons to picture two roads to God: one built on human effort, the other on God’s promise received by faith. The surprise is that the people trusting in their own rule-keeping were acting like children of the slave woman, not the free woman. Holt warns against every “faith-plus” add-on — whether circumcision, baptism, a prayer, or simply being a good person — because only faith in Christ saves. Questions this study answers: 1. Why does Paul tell the story of Abraham’s two sons? He uses it as a picture. One son came from human effort and one from God’s promise, showing the difference between trying to earn salvation and receiving it by faith. 2. What part do our works play in being saved? The Whole Counsel Of God

Should preachers teach only the easy parts of the Bible? No. In Acts 20:17-38, the Apostle Paul charges the Ephesian elders to preach the whole counsel of God — not just the comfortable parts. Dr. Toby Holt explains why every truth of Scripture matters. Meeting the elders one last time, Paul reminded them how he served through tears and trials, holding nothing back. He warned that "savage wolves" would come — even from within the church — twisting the truth. His answer was not less Bible, but all of it, faithfully taught. Questions this study answers: 1.
