25. Storyteller - Jeremy Schonfeld

Jeremy Schonfeld's powerful storytelling voice, reveals the heart of a man on a journey, vulnerably seeking to understand himself, his family and friends and his community. Weaving across the story-threads of Jeremy's musical tome, is his own deeply genuine exploration of fatherhood. Having been moved by his music since it first landed in my ears over a decade ago, I continue to be drawn to this recurring theme of what it means to have a father and be a father; reflective of the joys and sorrows, dreams and regrets, times of absence and presence and above all, the wisdom gathered from both sides of the role. An award-winning Billboard-charting singer/songwriter, composer/lyricist, producer and performer, Jeremy is also co-founder of the Beacon Bonfire Music and Art Festival, held annually in Beacon, New York. As a bonus to end Season 2, on Father's Day, Jeremy joined me in conversation about his creative process, his life as a storyteller and fatherhood.

17. Piece by Piece - Theo Harasymiw

If you live in Edmonton, Alberta, have been in any number of schools, community centres and places where people meet, you have likely passed by, hopefully admired some of Theo Harasymiw's visual art. She is best known for her large colourful, graphic, and often whimsical murals found all over the city. Her visual palette includes equally vivid collections of acrylic paint and assembled bits and pieces of porcelain, bone china, artifacts and the miscellany that will find new meaning and pattern in the creation of one of her mosaics. She draws much inspiration from her travels to Europe, the Middle East and Latin America, but is perhaps most influenced by her strong Ukrainian heritage and the various forms of traditional craft. Theo describes herself as seeker of all things creative, nurturer of Art in others, mother, and life enthusiast; all of which our conversation touched upon and more.

Lolla Devindisch's life has been a creative quest to "live fully and authentically" and through it all, she has held a channel open, at first intuitive and then intentional; a space to more fully be at peace with the little girl who left her home at 7, left a life she loved and a father she adored. In her self-published memoir, A Dancer's Pilgrimage, she acknowledges the journey has been one of seeking understanding redemption and finally serenity. 15. Reigniting a Creative Life – Dennis Garnhum

At the outset of the pandemic, writer and theatre director, Dennis Garnhum found himself facing a crisis of confidence and the despair that so many artists around the world were experiencing when their primary venues for creative expression went dark. Garnhum, who has directed theatre and opera productions across North America, has written and co-written several award-winning plays and adaptations and is generally acknowledged to be one of the country's most admired and highly respected Artistic Directors, felt completely lost. Surrounded by a loving community, he agreed to withdraw his letter of resignation as Artistic Director of the Grand Theatre in London, and instead pick up a backpack, buy a plane ticket and head to Spain to tackle a grueling 830 km Camino walk. A choice that would prove to be a kind of personal rehearsal hall allowing him to commit fully to the work of reigniting his creative spirit. As he walked, he captured moments in writing and upon returning published Toward Beauty, in which he poignantly shares his discoveries through the relationships with fellow pilgrims and most essentially, through the deepening of his relationship with himself. Throughout the book, Garnhum's story shines a light on the power of the human spirit to overcome heartbreak and fear and move toward beauty on soft step at a time.

6. Sound to Colour - Ciele Beau

Ciele Beau 'sees' a piece of music. Growing up this was normal. It wasn't until 3 years into her visual art studies at the then, Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, that she learned there was a thing called Synesthesia - a condition where the brain mixes up the senses and stimulation of one sensory pathway leading to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory pathway. Her discovery of her synesthesia has led her not only to better understanding her sensory experience of the world but has also allowed her to embrace it as a powerful modality for creative expression. She has created a painting practice around this experience that allows her to translate sheet music of her favourite songs into colour on the canvas. Her work focuses on the human condition, our emotional responses and everyday experiences. Her visual art explodes off the canvases or walls of the urban landscape with a vibrancy of colour and shape, that invites the inner child in us all, outside to play in this imaginative world she has created. Ciele is a full-time freelance creative, and has worked with companies such as Pabst Blue Ribbon, Warner Brothers (CW's Riverdale), Slack, Adobe, Vancouver Mural Festival, Vancouver Pride, Georgia Straight, Sarah McLachlan School of Music, SAD Magazine, Sofar Sounds and more. 44. Josh Languedoc - Unpacking What We Are Carrying

In the case of his first formal play, Rocko and Nakota: Tales From the Land, theatre artist Josh Languedoc has come to realize that while the play was first produced in 2018 professionally, he had been carrying in pieces for many years, being unpacked and revealed gradually along the way. Josh, a proud member of the Saugeen First Nation, now lives as a guest in Treaty 6 Territory as an Anishinaabe playwright, producer, storyteller, and teacher. His most recent production, Civil Blood: A Treaty Story, an immersive contemporary tale inspired by the signing of Treaty 6, the love story of Romeo and Juliet, and the lessons learned about what it means to be treaty people. This intriguing production, co-written by Josh and Neil Kuefler and produced by Thou Art Here and Common Ground Arts onsite at Fort Edmonton this past summer, invited audiences to consider present truth by meditating on our collective past. At the time of our conversation, Josh had also just begun work as an Associate Producer at the National Arts Centre of a project titled #ReconcileThis, one of many topics we had a chance to dive into.

52. Anne Wheeler - Just Keep Growing

While acknowledging that part of being in a stage of life where she is both conscious and intentional about sharing her wisdom, Canadian film icon, Anne Wheeler, joyfully continues to learn every day and in every way; the belief that we keep going when we keep growing. Anne's storytelling palette rich in historical narratives has always been inspired by the lives of everyday people finding their way in life. Reflecting on a career that now reaches back 5 decades, Anne takes well-earned pride in having created strong films, with strong messages and strong points of view. In her early career, as a part of the Edmonton based film collective, FilmWest, she directed documentaries tackling issues of the environment, indigenous rights, women's rights and Western politics. Later on with the more expansive frame a feature provided, she courageously brought the pain and intimacy of the trauma experienced through the horrors of war, sexual abuse or racism to light in her award-winning and deeply empathetic features, Loyalties and POW. Her reputation as a powerhouse Canadian film artist was further cemented with the release of Bye, Bye Blues, an appealing musical drama inspired by her mother's experience as a musician in a small dance band during WWII. She has continued to write and direct both film and TV and in 2020 published Taken By The Muse, a delightful collection of stories of her path to becoming a filmmaker. Along with the Order of Canada, Anne is the recipient of 7 honorary doctorates and every time she steps up to address a group of young students she does so in the hope that they will allow themselves to, in her words, "go out and get lost" in the next chapter of their learning and growing.
