Geoffrey Connors, MD - Run Differently

Dr. Connors is the Program Director of the University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency Program, the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine, and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan, his MD from Tulane, did residency and a chief year at the University of Colorado, and fellowship in pulm/crit at Johns Hopkins before joining the faculty at Yale. He moved to the University of Colorado in 2017 and has led the internal medicine residency program since that time. It is apparent in speaking with Dr. Connors that for him, medical education is more of a calling than a career – and he has spearheaded progressive reforms at the residency level during his tenure. These include the formation of a 4+4 schedule, building in research time for residents, and doing away with 28-hour call and extended duration shifts. Today, we discuss the past, present, and future of medical education and our training infrastructure, how it can and should change, and how to continually find joy in academic medicine and education. Carol Aherne, PhD - You Only Regret the Things You Don't Do

Dr. Aherne is an Assistant Professor at University College Dublin School of Medicine. She earned her PhD from University College Dublin followed by a post-doc and assistant professorship at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. I caught up with Dr. Aherne at last years FASEB epithelial biology conference in steamboat springs and we discussed the challenges facing young faculty both in the US and Ireland. Luisa Cervantes-Barragan, PhD - Into the Unknown

Dr. Luisa Cervantes-Barragan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University. Dr. Cervantes-Barragan got her PhD and did a postdoctoral fellowship at Kantonsspital St.Gallen. She then did a postdoc at Washington University in St Louis before joining the faculty at Emory. Discharge Summaries #1 w/ Andrew Pham, MD

Today we introduce a new series in which co-hosts Elizabeth Konon & Nikolai Harroun interview trainees at pivotal transitions in their training. Today's guest is Dr. Andrew Pham - a PGY3 in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado. Andrew Pham is a native Coloradoan and a son to Vietnamese refugee immigrants. He has completed all of his training in state with undergraduate degrees from the University of Denver and medical school at the University of Colorado. Dr. Pham was recently selected to become a Chief medical resident starting July 2024. Haydn Kissick, PhD - The Philosophy of Science

Dr. Haydn Kissick is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Translational Research in the Department of Urology with a joint appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University School of Medicine. He received his PhD in Immunology from the University of Western Australia and did his postdoctoral training in Prostate Cancer Immunology at Harvard Medical School. He is also the PhD advisor for our executive producer Carey Jansen. Bedside Rounds w/ Mel Anderson, MD

Dr. Mel Anderson is an academic hospitalist and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He serves as the National Program Executive Director for Hospital Medicine in the Veterans Healthcare Administration. Dr. Anderson graduated AOA from the University of Texas, Houston, School of Medicine (AKA McGovern School of Medicine) in 1994 and completed Internal Medicine residency and a Chief Residency at the David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center. Dr. Anderson served for many years as an associate program director and interim program director for the University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency Program, where he founded and led the Clinician/Educator residency pathway and mentored hundreds of future internists. His academic interests center on bedside clinical teaching, faculty development, as well as teaching and implementing Evidence-Based Medicine.
