    Die Erwärmung des Planeten stellt die Menschheit vor eine historisch nie gekannte, existenzielle Herausforderung. Der Historiker Dipesh Chakrabarty zieht daraus in den diesjährigen Benjamin-Lectures eine radikale Konsequenz: Es braucht ein umfassendes Umdenken, das nicht nur die politische und ökonomische Ordnung, das kapitalistische Weltsystem, in Frage stellt, sondern auch das Selbstverständnis des Menschen schlechthin. Das entwickelte er über drei Abende hinweg im Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Ein Vierteljahrhundert nach der Veröffentlichung seines bahnbrechenden Werks „Europa als Provinz“ wirft er die Frage auf, ob die vielfältigen ökologischen Katastrophen, die den Planeten heimgesucht haben, nun auch eine „Provinzialisierung“ der Menschheit selbst erforderlich machen. In dieser Folge diskutiert Sabine Nuss mit Rahel Jaeggi und Christian Schmidt (Philosoph und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Center) zentrale Punkte der Vorlesungen von Dipesh Chakrabarty und fragt, was wir daraus lernen können.     Crisis and Transformation

    What time is it? What world are we living in? Is it continuous with the world of the 19th and 20th centuries, or has there been a radical break? This episode is devoted to these questions, specifically in relation to the meaning of crisis and transformation. Since the financial crisis of 2007/2008, there has been a continuous series of crises that have been felt globally. Everyone talks about crisis all the time: economic crisis, ecological crisis, polycrisis, care crisis, legitimacy crisis. But what if the concept of crisis itself is in crisis? Is there a way to diagnose the present crises and to analyze transformative potentials without using outdated conceptual schemes? To get into this deeper, Jacob Blumenfeld speaks with Rahel Jaeggi and Robin Celikates about crises, blockages, transformation and social struggles today. The occasion for this discussion is the Crisis and Transformation conference that took place at the Grimm-Zentrum, Humboldt University Berlin, from June 4-5, 2026, with speakers including Adam Tooze, Isabella Weber, Dipesh Chakrabarty, Maeve Cooke, Silke van Dyk, Philipp Staab, Henrike Kohpeiß, Jay Bernstein, Debaditya Bhattacharya, Manuela Bojadžijev, Maeve Cooke, Rodrigo Cordero, Stephan Lessenich, Isette Schuhmacher, Joseph Tainter, Markus Wissen, and Joseph Vogl.     Woher kommt der neue Faschismus?

    In ihrem neuesten Buch “Zerstörungslust. Elemente des demokratischen Faschismus“ widmen sich Carolin Amlinger und Oliver Nachtwey dem aktuellen Erstarken faschistischer Bewegungen. Warum wenden sich so viele Menschen Trump, Musk oder der AfD zu? Grund sei die Blockade liberaler Demokratien, die ihr Versprechen auf Aufstieg und Autonomie nicht einlösen. Die beiden Soziologen identifizieren in Teilen der Bevölkerung eine befremdliche Lust Gesellschaft zu zerstören, sie werten dies als verzweifelten Versuch, nicht selbst zum Leidtragenden gegenwärtiger Krisen zu werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund spricht Sabine Nuss mit Robin Celikates und Rahel Jaeggi darüber, welche Blockadeerfahrungen gemeint sind, ob sie nicht über das Scheitern individueller Aufstiegserwartungen hinaus reichen, welchen Stellenwert sozialpsychologische Konzepte haben, was gegen die beobachtbaren Prozesse der Faschisierung helfen könnte und wie sinnvoll es überhaupt ist, von Faschismus zu sprechen. Anlass dieser Folge war die Veranstaltung „Regressive Destruktion – Buchdiskussion mit Oliver Nachtwey“ in der Reihe „Format at Work“ am 17.     Critique of AI: with Matteo Pasquinelli, Anna-Verena Nosthoff, Roland Meyer, and Rainer Mühlhoff

    How should we criticize AI, and how shouldn’t we? This episode features a roundtable discussion organized by the Centre for Social Critique at HU Berlin on February 16th, 2026, featuring Matteo Pasquinelli, Anna-Verena Nosthoff, Roland Meyer, and Rainer Mühlhoff, moderated by Jacob Blumenfeld. Throughout the conversation, the discussants criticize AI as an ideology, a mode of power, and a social relation. Rather than treating AI as either some super intelligence or inherent doom, they focus on the dominant political and economic forces that contemporary AI both expresses and intensifies. The conversation explores how contemporary AI systems inherit older cybernetic ambitions of control, prediction, and optimization, while serving as ideological cover for new forms of domination. The participants examine AI’s role in reshaping the division of labor, from the automation and decomposition of skilled work to new forms of surveillance. They also ask whether the logics of scale embedded in AI are contributing to new authoritarian and even fascist tendencies adequate to the digital age. At stake throughout is not only what AI does, but what social order it helps reproduce, and what it would mean to resist the imperative of AI altogether.     Gegengemeinschaften: Neue revolutionäre Subjekte?

    Das klassische revolutionäre Subjekt ist von der Bildfläche verschwunden. Was ihm nachfolgte, wurde vom Kapitalismus absorbiert. Doch wer tritt heute an die Stelle des Proletariats, um die Verhältnisse, in denen der Mensch ein geknechtetes Wesen ist, umzuwälzen? Der Philosoph Daniel Loick schlägt hierfür das Konzept der „Gegengemeinschaften“ vor. Jenseits der Institutionen der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft schließen sich die Unterlegenen gegen Diskriminierung und Marginalisierung im alltäglichen Kampf zusammen. Dabei entsteht ihre Überlegenheit, die sie prädestiniert, gegen die herrschenden Verhältnisse aufzubegehren und neue Infrastrukturen der Fürsorge und somit der Rettung des menschlichen (und nicht-menschlichen) Wohlergehens zu bilden. Doch was verbirgt sich hinter der paradox anmutenden „Überlegenheit der Unterlegenen“? In dieser Folge spricht Sabine Nuss mit Rahel Jaeggi ausgehend vom Konzept der Gegengemeinschaften über das Potenzial neuer kollektiver Handlungsfähigkeit, die Fallstricke des Gemeinschaftsbegriffs und das Bild des unermüdlich grabenden Maulwurfs.     The Grounds of Planning PART II: Aaron Benanav on Utopia, Socialism, and Rationality

    Should we be making recipes for the cook shops of the future? In part two of this series on planning, Jacob Blumenfeld speaks with Aaron Benanav about utopian thinking, economic rationality, and what it might actually mean to plan beyond capitalism. Moving between Marx, critical theory, and the history of utopian socialism, the conversation returns to figures like Thomas More, Edward Bellamy, and William Morris to ask what utopias do for political imagination—and where they fall short. Benanav argues that although one should not concoct too rigid a blueprint for the future, it is worse to have no plan at all. Instead, he outlines the idea of a multi-criterial economy: an economy that recognizes that economic decisions involve multiple, often conflicting values—autonomy, sustainability, efficiency, care, for instance—and cannot be reduced to a single metric like money or utility; they are intrinsically political choices. The episode takes up concrete questions that utopian debates often avoid: trade-offs, investment, transition, and implementation. How are priorities set? Who decides? What role should money play, if any? And how can democratic decision-making function under conditions of uncertainty and disagreement, without collapsing into technocracy or abstract moralism? Against neoclassical economics and rational choice theory, Benanav insists that rationality is not about finding the “optimal” solution, but about collectively negotiating priorities in a world of limits. Utopia reappears here not as a final destination, but as a critical tool—helping us think about feasibility, coordination, and political choice without pretending that conflicts can be engineered away.     The Grounds of Planning PART I: John O’Neill on the Socialist Calculation Debate

    What does it mean to plan an economy rationally—and who gets to decide what counts as rational? In part one of this series on planning, Jacob Blumenfeld speaks with political economist and philosopher John O’Neill about the socialist calculation debate and its legacy. Starting from Otto Neurath’s plans for socialization and in-kind calculation, the conversation revisits the classic critiques of planning advanced by Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, while questioning the very assumptions about rationality, value, and knowledge on which those critiques rest. Against the idea that markets, money, and prices provide a neutral or exhaustive measure of social reason, O’Neill reconstructs a forgotten strand of the debate—one centered on value pluralism, incommensurability, and the material conditions of human need. The discussion ranges across ecology, intergenerational justice, expertise and democracy, pseudorationality, and the limits of formal and instrumental reason, drawing on figures such as K. William Kapp, Karl Polanyi, Max Weber, Max Horkheimer, and Otto Neurath as well. Rather than asking whether markets or planning “won,” the episode asks what was lost when rationality was reduced to optimization, information, and price signals, and how alternative conceptions of planning might help us think through today’s ecological and social crises. But before the interview begins, Rahel Jaeggi and Jacob Blumenfeld discuss the “Grounds of Planning” workshop from December 2025, organized by the Centre for Social Critique, and some of the key themes concerning needs, rationality, and democracy.

    In dieser Folge stellen wir die geplanten Aktivitäten des Centres for Social Critique im Jahr 2026 vor. „Die Krise des Rationalen“ ist der diesjährige Fokus. Was für eine Krise ist hier gemeint, welche Veranstaltungen gibt es, auf welche Gäste können wir gespannt sein? Wir geben u.a. einen Ausblick auf die jährlichen Benjamin Lectures: Eingeladen ist der international anerkannte Historiker Dipesh Chakrabarty. Er lehrt an der University of Chicago und ist Gründungsmitglied der Subaltern und Postcolonial Studies. Für ihn offenbart das „planetarische Bewusstsein“ die Grenzen des Konzepts „Nationalstaat“ und die ambivalente Rolle der modernen Technologie. Im Juni 2026 wird er im Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin über die Zukunft der Menschheit angesichts des ökologischen Zusammenbruchs sprechen.
