However, the consensus ends there. While Andrew found himself swept up in the film’s atmospheric storytelling and emotional weight, I (to put it mildly) wasn’t buying what the director was selling. This week, we’re breaking down: The Adaptation Trap: Does the three-act structure of the play help or hinder the cinematic flow? Visual Language vs. Narrative Heart: Where the film succeeds in creating a world, but—for some of us—fails to capture the soul of the source material.     ANORA! and The OSCAR Showdown!

    On this episode we take a look at the film Anora! An Indie film about a Cinderella story. A stripper, named Anora, gets the client of a lifetime, Ivan "Vanya," a billionaire son of an oligarch, hires her for sex and fun and ends up asking her to marry him. Just like Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman!" It's a dream come true for the young Anora, until her world comes crashing down and some shady henchmen and the oligarchs show up to annul the her marriage. Will she survive the henchman and what what happened to her husband Ivan? We also look at this years Oscars and who will win for best picture and what is the criteria that a movie is judged in order to win.

One of Andrews favorite films that explores themes of determinism and ethics of discrimination based on selective gene manipulation. Gattaca: A Dystopian Exploration of Genetic Determinism Gattaca is a thought-provoking science fiction film that paints a chilling picture of a future society where individuals are genetically engineered and categorized based on their perceived genetic potential. The film explores themes of genetic determinism, discrimination, and the human spirit's ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Key Themes: Genetic Determinism: The film posits a future where a person's worth is largely determined by their genetic makeup. Those born with "valid" genes (genetically engineered) are favored, while those born naturally ("invalids") are often relegated to lower-class jobs. Discrimination: Gattaca depicts a society rife with genetic discrimination. Individuals with "invalid" genes face prejudice and discrimination in employment, education, and personal relationships.     On this Episode Andrew and Vartan breakdown the cinematic masterpiece Paris, Texas. Released in 1984 the film tells the story of Travis Henderson, a man with no memory lost in Texas. As Travis slowly gains his memories back, a story that seems like a mystery unfolds into a tale about family, loneliness, what it means to be a parent, and redemption. We also take a look at some Oscar movies from 1985 and why Paris, Texas was not nominated for anything, but won several international awards.
