    Precious Metals and Human Rights

    NYC based, jewelry designer, Christina Malle tries to empower people to ask questions about where gold, silver and gemstones are from. She says the more frequently that consumers pose questions, the sooner we will have transparency and traceability in the jewelry supply chains. Why is this important? To enable accountability, practically non-existant today. The current opacity in the “luxury” sector means that predatory practices towards miners and environmental degradations continue essentially unchecked. She strives to add beauty to the world — via jewelry — but not at the expense of people and planet. The first step is asking where materials are from, how they got here and their impact on people and planet along the way.     Life in the Clouds: Environmental Conservation

    In 2002, Ian and Genevieve (Jenny) Giddy purchased a 60 hectare (148 acre) cattle farm bordering Chirripó National Park in southern Costa Rica. and then added 700 more acres to replant and conserve high-altitude montane primary forest, with an enormous diversity of tropical trees, birds, insects and other flora and fauna. From its beginnings as a reforestation project, Cloudbridge has grown along with its forests to expand and develop projects on not just reforestation, but conservation, education and research as well. So far, the restoration project has been a great success, through either planting or natural regeneration, tree cover has been re-established over almost the entire reserve. This allows us to focus on the next phase of regeneration, planting climax species in the understory that will slowly take over from the pioneer species over the next several decades, and, eventually, return the reserve to a climax forest composition.     Guest Greg Quinn is an American farmer in upstate New York who specializes in the cultivation of currants and other delights at his farm in upstate New York. He has taught farming at the NY Botanical Garden, and other academic institutions. He is a published author of eight children's books by Scholastic Press, and has written articles for such publications as SKY Magazine, Good Housekeeping and Fine Gardening.     Exploration in Extreme Environments

    Christine Dennison has been leading expeditions for the last 20 years to the Arctic, the Amazon and other remote destinations around the world. She has led expeditions to the most remote corners of civilization, working with indigenous people and societies. She dives with caimans and piranhas in the Amazon rain forest, sharks in the Caribbean, underwater ice caves in the High Arctic and has explored the deepest wreck in Grenada, W.I. She has skied to the North Pole to raise awareness of climate change and protection and conservation of our environment and wildlife. Her Technical diving Certifications include: Technical Nitrox, Wreck, Cave Diver, Gas Blender, Supervisor and Technical Divemaster. Christine is internationally recognized for being the First Woman to dive, document and explore the icy waters and ice caves of the Canadian High Arctic Northwest Passage, the tannic waters of the Brazilian Amazon's Rio Negro tributaries and was the only woman on the team that recovered the Bianca C’s Ship bell for the Grenada Museum, W.I.
