    Let’s Talk About Radiohead | Tales from the Concert | RIP Columbia House

    Greg is out this week, but we’re delighted to welcome back Erik Lenhart to the show. He’s just started his summer vacation and has some concerts that he’ll be attending in the upcoming weeks. Among them, is a  Radiohead tribute band called No Surprises. Erik hasn’t gone through a Radiohead phase and needs to catch up before the show. Nick and Jay happily bring him up to speed. The Outlaws - “Green Grass & High Tides” Nick and his brother, Alex, caught Queens of the Stone Age & Foo Fighters this week at Nationals Park in Washington DC. It’s Tales from the Concert! Nick recaps the experience. Song: Foo fighters - “Big me (Live at Nationals Park)” Given the formative role it played during his high school years, Jay felt it only proper that we talk about Columbia House. The company announced this week that it’s shutting down. Founded in 1955 as The Columbia Record Club, the company landed on a business model in the 80s and 90s that no music-obsessed teenager could refuse. 12 CDs for a penny (plus 6 months where you had to buy a CD and return a monthly postcard to avoid getting billed for an additional ‘selection of the month’).     8bit | Three for Thursday | Heard It Through the GREGvine

    Upon exploring a random Gamelan station on Apple Music, Jay heard a song that reminded him of a song from the Nintendo Switch game, Mario Odyssey. That got him thinking about other video game music that sounds like songs we know and love, so he’s bringing it back a classic segment! This is 8-bit. Songs: Gamelan Degung - “Gara Gara Cinta” Sonic 3 Ice Cap Zone sounds like “Hard Times” by The Jetzons (there maybe a good reason for that) Nobuo Uematsu - “Dancing Mad, 4th Movement (Final Fantasy VI)” Nick had a great staycation last week and brings back some songs to share on a Three for Thursday. YHWH Nailgun released a 10-track, eleven minute album that’s somehow weirder than their last, Gong is still being explored, and 50 years ago this week, a little ditty by Herman’s Hermits took the #1 spot on the charts. Songs: YHWH Nailgun - “Magazine” Gong - “Percolations Part I & Part II” Herman’s Hermits - “I'm Henry VIII, I Am” This Heard It Through the GREGvine starts off with a detour to Where’s One Tho? Then we learn about Henry Rollins and Ian Mackaye’s mission to resurrect the music of their childhood heroes, The Cramps.     Three for Thursday | D’Addario Drama + Is it AI?

    Nick’s away on vacation this week, but Greg and Jay manage to fill an hour with a show and some much needed guitar talk. Greg has a Three for Thursday featuring a song from Gong, Boards of Canada, and a clip from the Red Not Chili Peppers live at House of Blues, Orlando from July 31, 2026. You can check that whole show out over at the internet archive - https://archive.org/details/red-not-chili-peppers-2026-07-31  Songs: Gong - “Sleepy” Boards of Canada - “Peacock Twin” Red Not Chili Peppers - “Aeroplane (Live in Orlando)” Jay shares an unfolding story about a D’Addario guitar string advertisement containing, according to the internet, AI generated music. This got Jay thinking, can we really tell if a song is AI anymore? He puts Greg to the test.

    News with Nick | Where’s One Tho? | Summer Jam at Watkins Glenn (1973)

    We start off with News with Nick! Soundcloud acquires Nina Protocol, Old Dirty Bastard gets an NYC street named after him, Faith No More Reunites, and Madison Square Garden owner, James Dolan, has made some interesting decisions about how to run his venue. Song: Gong - “Oily Way (Remastered 2018)” Ever hear a song and think, Where’s One Tho? Greg is bringing the bit back, which means we’re one step closer to a theme song! This round we listen to various breakdowns of the Meshuggah song “Combustion,” and take then we take a stab at “Zhivago” by Kurt Rosenwinkel. Songs: Meshuggah - “Combustion” Kurt Rosenwinkel - “Zhivago” Fifty-three years ago, on July 28 (1973), a festival was hosted outside Watside Glen by the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, and The Band. Summer Jam at Watkins Glen sold 150,000 tickets for $10 each and then allowed the additional 450,000+ people that showed up to hear the show for free, setting a new Guinness Book Record.     Tales from the Concert | News with Nick | Three for Thursday

    Jay is back after a fantastic vacation and somehow found the time to catch Phish at Merriweather Post Pavilion last Saturday. He shares the details in another Tales from the Concert. Song; Phish - “Free (Live at Merriweather Post Pavilion, July 18, 2026)” Next up, it’s News with Nick! This week we remember Bonnie Tyler, look forward to the new King Gizzard album, and discuss whether music containing AI should be labeled as such. Song: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - “Okarena” Greg closes us out with a Three for Thursday. We hear some music from the relatively new band, Wunderhorse. Then we’re on to a relatively old band, The Pretty Things, that had a song in the 70s that sounds a little bit like a Radiohead classic (from the 90s). Finally, we celebrate the end of the World Cup with one more listen to a, now quite familiar, Shakira song. Songs: Wunderhorse - “Silver” The Pretty Things - “In the Square” Shakira - “Dai Dai”

    Jay is at the beach and decided that, this year, he’s taking a true vacation from all obligations. That means it’s Nick & Greg this week! They catch up and explore music from the Internet Archive.     “Where's One Tho?” | Greatest Music List | News with Nick

    We begin with a new bit from Greg called “Where’s One Tho?” We listen to the beginning of tracks to try and figure out what beat the song begins on. Pretty straightforward, but not as easy as you think. Songs: Little Richard - “Keep a Knockin” Led Zeppelin - ‘Rock and Roll” (Explanation video) Beethoven's Fifth Meshuggah - Combustion (Explanation video) Jay has unearthed the list of all lists. thegreatestmusic.org is a website that aggregates and weights 57 active lists of best albums and songs. Nick & Greg take turns guessing what made the ultimate list of all lists. Song: Captain Beefheart - “Pachuco Cadaver” It’s News with Nick! Wilco & Breeders break a world record, Adam Sandler has new gig as a wedding officiant, Canada considers joining Eurovision, and Alabama Shakes announces their first album in 11 years.     Three For Thursday | Michael Hedges | Clive Davis

    Jackson is back to tell us about his trip with Dad to Las Vegas & the Grand Canyon! Nick kicks us off with a Three for Thursday. We hear Austrian jazz guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, jump into the latest release from Lambchop, and finish up with a track from Ari Hoenig. Songs: Wolfgang Muthspiel & Brian Blade - “Youssou” Lambchop - “Stella” Ari Hoenig - “Condemnation (feat Gadi Lehavi & Ben Tiberio)” On his journey with Jackson, Greg came across a record store. After digging through their selection, he came across an album by Michael Hedges. An incredible guitarist relegated to the ’New Age’ genre, Hedges played the guitar like no one else before him. We dig into his work. Songs: Michael Hedges - “Layover” Michael Hedges - “Sofa No.1” Michael Hedges - “Ragamuffin” Jay decided to take up the challenge and brings us a very special tribute to Clive Davis.
