    Titus 3:3–15

    Christians are called to good works not to earn their salvation, but to display God’s saving grace to a lost world. We preach the gospel with our words and with our lives. The two always go hand in hand. Yet, God has not given these commands to us in His Word as a guilt trip, but as a grace trip. The more we come to see the depths of His mercy in saving us, the more we are compelled by His love to share that same mercy with those who do not yet know Christ as their Savior. Remember who you were. Remember the lengths to which God went in saving you. Let His work in your life flow beyond you to your neighbors, your coworkers, your city, and beyond. Give yourself to a purpose that will never run dry, that of advancing the kingdom of God in the world.

    Titus 3:1–2

    Paul’s words to Titus explain how Christians can behave in personal relationships, but also on a wider scale to be a gospel-oriented influence on their culture. These commands span the breadth of our entire lives, covering our civic responsibilities as well as our call to be active agents of good in the world. But as Jud said, at one point or another, you’re going to blow it. No one is perfect and we all experience times of failure. When those times come, resolve to be a person that projects authenticity, honesty, humility, and integrity. In doing so, you will show others the grace of God and the joy that comes with being freed from the belief that you have to earn His mercy.

    Titus 2:11–15

    If left to ourselves, we would never earn our way to God. Yet, in His great mercy, He has made Himself known to us through the person and work of Jesus Christ and by His grace we are saved. But God has done more than merely save us from our former worldly pursuits. He has also saved us to good works that He has prepared for us to live out in His name. You and I are invited into the mission of God’s redemptive work throughout the world. Because of that, you have a divine calling wherever you find yourself today. Let that truth motivate all that you do this week. By God’s grace, He is at work in you and through you at all times.

    Titus 2:1–10

    No matter your stage of life or the circumstance in which you find yourself today, you have an opportunity to live a life that reflects the goodness of God. Whether young or old, male or female, employed or unemployed, your life is preaching to those around you. What are you contributing to the reputation of Christ? Take some time to reflect on Paul’s words in this passage. Key in especially on the stage of life that best relates to you today and walk in obedience to God’s Word trusting that He will use you to bring glory to His name.

    Titus 1:10–16

    Most false teaching begins subtly, but it has catastrophic consequences. Because of that, it is important for all Christians to be devoted students of the Word of God, our ultimate authority in life. As Jud explained, false teaching always redefines Christianity so that our works earn the kindness of God rather than relying solely on His grace for acceptance. We must always resist this error because it discounts not only the extent of our sinful condition, but also the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Scripture makes it clear that we are saved by grace through faith—nothing else. And it is truth that guards that gift of grace for future generations. In light of this session, commit to being one who will boldly stand against the false teachings of our day and point others to the beauty of the grace of God in all that you do and say.

    Titus 1:1–9

    Whether or not you hope to become an elder at your church, the life of integrity described in these verses is one all believers should aim for in their walk with Christ. God has given us all leadership opportunities no matter where He has placed us and our role is to help others feel their way towards God and find Him (Acts 17:26-27). Like Jud said, for some, you are the greatest Christian they will meet. What impression will your example make? Will it be one that points them to Christ? The world needs believers who are willing to boldly live out what they claim to believe in grace and truth. Make a commitment to do that today for the sake of the lost in your midst.

    Titus 1:1–4

    Good works are necessary for the Christian life—not to achieve our salvation, but to display it to the world. Our behaviors reveal what we truly believe, but we often discount the influence of our environment upon the ways in which we live. There are many things contending for priority in our hearts—culture, relationships, career, money, and so on —and when we devote ourselves to anything other than Christ, we will live in ways that discredit the good news He desires for all to embrace. We all have blind spots, which is why we need deep relationships within the body of Christ. As you begin this study, take the courageous step of asking whether or not your behavior reflects what you claim to believe. Doing so might require you to make some changes about the way you live, but they will lead you to a deeper intimacy with Christ, which is worth even the greatest of sacrifices.

    Judges 19:1–21:25

    Judges has shed light on the human condition. We’re our own worst enemy. When left alone, we will always choose the selfish road. We are incapable of saving ourselves and we don’t always see the need to be saved. Apart from God, we have no hope. God’s character shines brightly against the shadows of Judges. God remains faithful to his rebellious people, though they continually turn their backs on him. He chooses to use weak and flawed people to bring about salvation for Israel. God saves in unlikely and unpredictable ways. He allows his people to choose to disobey, even insult him. But he never leaves them and brings about justice in his timing. We can walk away from our study of Judges with a clear view of God and his character and the human problem of sin. We know the hope we find in knowing and following God as his people. Let’s heed the warning of Judges and continue to obey God in all we do with our eyes set on him no matter what situation we find ourselves in.
