The only Pope to visit New Zealand

In November 1986, Pope John Paul II visited New Zealand as part of his longest ever world tour. He gave an open-air mass at Auckland Domain in front of thousands of people. He remains the only Pope to have visited the country. Jen Dale speaks to Michael Jarka who was in the crowd and performed as part of a Polish cultural dance group for the pontiff. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by and curious about the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from how the Excel spreadsheet was developed, the creation of cartoon rabbit Miffy and how the sound barrier was broken. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: the moment Reagan and Gorbachev met in Geneva, Haitian singer Emerante de Pradines’ life and Omar Sharif’s legendary movie entrance in Lawrence of Arabia. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, like the invention of a stent which has saved lives around the world; the birth of the G7; and the meeting of Maldives’ ministers underwater. We cover everything from World War Two and Cold War stories to Black History Month and our journeys into space. (Photo: Pope John Paul II kisses the ground upon his arrival in Auckland airport. the myth of being effortless

Why do we glamorize not caring? Why are we so embarrassed to be seen trying? In the second installment of our DEBRIEF series, we’re exploring the cultural obsession with being effortless and why pretending you don’t care about something might actually be holding you back. From dating advice and relationships to careers, confidence, and personal growth, we’re constantly told to play it cool: don’t try too hard, don’t text first, don’t show how much you care. But the truth is that the most meaningful things in life—deep friendships, healthy relationships, successful careers, and personal development—are built through effort, intention, and perseverance (not magic. and most DEF not by pretending you don’t care). If you’ve ever wondered whether struggle means something isn’t meant for you, or felt embarrassed for wanting something badly, this conversation will shift how you think about effort, discipline, and success. We’re debriefing: • why society glamorizes effortlessness and natural talent• the pressure to appear unbothered in dating and relationships• why trying hard isn’t embarrassing (and why we think it is)• the difference between forcing something vs. putting in effort• why hard doesn’t mean something isn’t meant for you• the psychology of grit, perseverance, and skill development• how discipline and consistency shape success more than talent• the fear of visible effort and public failure (especially on social media)• why the most meaningful things in life require intentional effort• a closing journaling prompt for self-reflection and personal growth As always, take whatever resonates & leave the rest. And please remember: nothing meaningful is built by pretending you don’t care. EPISODE 7: Glades

Transferred in the middle of the night to a detention center in rural Florida, everything felt unfamiliar — but not worse… just different. Fewer phones. Fewer people. More isolation. Inside Glades, the routine settles in. Strange stories, unpredictable personalities, and a system that moves slow — until it doesn’t. As hope begins to shift, one thing becomes clear: This isn’t about justice. It’s about endurance. © Quasi Lewis. All rights reserved.

How a Maasai community in Kenya overcame a deadly drought

In 2013, after losing most of their cattle, a Maasai community in Kajiado County formed an organisation to protect their land and culture. It's called ‘Ildalalekutuk Maasai Action for Development' and was formed by Dalmas Tiampati. He tells Megan Jones how the aim was to help the community become more resilient and find ways to protect the culture. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by and curious about the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. Celebrating 10 Seasons of Sistas w/KJ Smith-Black & Jordan Coleman

Crystal Renee welcomes KJ Smith Black and Jordan Coleman to celebrate 10 seasons of Tyler Perry’s Sistas and talk about what it’s like playing sisters on screen while building real sisterhood off set. They share how their chemistry came naturally, Jordan’s nerves joining an established cast in season 10 (including a vulnerable first-day scene), and how KJ made space for Jordan to shine. The conversation touches on character growth, family trauma and deflection, the pressure of carrying a show, and how fame can feel isolating even with strong support. They also discuss We Got You Sis community events, handling social media negativity with boundaries and blocking, and why their platforms come with responsibility. KJ plugs her Black Coffee business, and Jordan shares she’s producing an action short film. @luvcrystalrenee @KingJayBarnett See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Letting Go to Grow: Lessons in Friendship, Light & Resilience feat Khat

Welcome back to Let’s Try This Again—I’m your host, B Simone, and this episode is extra special because I’m sitting down with my longtime friend and OG in the hair and beauty game, Khat. We get real about what it means to evolve, shed old skins, and keep growing—even when it feels like the world is changing around you. I open up about how my own journey of trying again—whether it’s starting a new podcast season or pivoting in business—has really been about listening to that inner voice that says, “Get up, do it again, but this time with God and the wisdom you’ve learned.” Khat and I reminisce about how we met over a decade ago, hustling in the Atlanta hair scene, and how we’ve both stayed connected by committing to growth, even when it meant letting go of people or situations that no longer served us. We talk about the guilt that comes with outgrowing relationships and environments, and how sometimes what feels like grounding can actually be an anchor holding you back. Khat shares how her gift for pouring into others has shaped her, but also taught her the importance of not dimming her own light—a lesson I’m learning too, especially as someone who’s always tried to make sure everyone else is shining. We get into the spiritual side of growth—how connecting with nature and holistic practices has helped us both heal and evolve. I share how I’m a “hug-a-tree type of bitch,” and how taking my shoes off and feeling the grass under my feet grounds me in ways nothing else can. Khat talks about her recent trip to Bali and how travel and new experiences have deepened her spiritual journey. We both agree: your gifts—vision, hustle, faith—are already inside you; you just have to water them and let them grow. If you’ve ever felt stuck, guilty for outgrowing people, or just needed a reminder to keep shining your light, this episode is for you. It’s full of laughter, real talk, and the kind of motivation that keeps you trying again—no matter what Sponsor// Visit www.FindYourMiami.com See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
