Software Expert: This Is How You Design Systems That Survive

What separates software that survives from software nobody wants to touch? Nico Krijnen has spent 30 years building systems, coaching teams, and learning why some projects thrive while others quietly become the legacy code everyone avoids. In this episode, he shares why the real work starts after you ship, what actually turns a system into legacy, and why the knowledge in your team's heads matters more than the code itself. In this episode, we cover: Why production is where the real learning beginsThe team composition that consistently delivers resultsPeter Naur's Theory Building and why documentation alone falls shortHow knowledge leaving your team turns working systems into legacyWhy assuming you're wrong leads to better architectureWhether you're a senior engineer rethinking how you build or earlier in your career trying to understand what really matters, this episode will change how you think about software that lasts. Ferrari

Ferrari is the pinnacle of luxury scarcity — across its entire 79-year history, the company has sold just 330,000 cars at an average price today of $500,000. For context, Hermès sells that many Birkins and Kellys roughly every 2 years, and Rolex moves that many watches every 3 months. And yet this ultimate luxury product also lives under the same roof with a widely beloved professional sports team… one with 400 million rabid fans from all walks of life who live and die by the Scuderia’s performance every F1 race weekend! How is it possible that these two seemingly contradictory customer bases can coexist within the same company? And far from destroying each other’s value, only reinforce it? The answer, it turns out, is a beautiful, bloody, tragic and romantic opera that spans two families and three generations — and just might be one of the best tales we’ve ever told on Acquired. Buckle up for the story of Ferrari. Sponsors: Many thanks to our fantastic Spring '26 Season partners: J.P. Best apps to organize bookmarks, iPhone accessibility tools & risks of grey market streaming boxes (Episode 171, April 25, 2026 - Best of)

    • Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra first impressions: The new Ultra keeps a familiar look but improves comfort with a lighter aluminum build, faster charging, and better low-light camera performance. AI features are everywhere, but the standout is a built-in privacy display that limits side-angle viewing. • AI-powered phone features expand: Samsung leans heavily on AI for photo editing, call screening, and “agentic” tasks like booking rides or ordering food. Some features feel early, but the direction is toward phones doing more actions on your behalf. • T-Mobile’s live call translation: A new network-level feature will translate phone calls in real time across 50+ languages with no app required. Only one person on the call needs to be a T-Mobile customer, making it broadly useful. • Credit card fee settlement payouts: Small businesses that accepted Visa or Mastercard between 2004 and 2019 may receive payments from a $5.5 billion settlement over swipe fees. Checks are starting to go out now. • Debit vs credit card debate: Using tap-to-pay or chip is safest since it generates one-time numbers. Credit cards offer better fraud protection, while debit cards can help with budgeting but expose your actual funds. • Streaming TV gets more fragmented: Services like YouTube TV are testing cheaper genre-based bundles (sports, news, entertainment), but the ecosystem remains confusing. Consumers must mix and match carefully to avoid overspending. • Local sports streaming options grow: MLB and regional networks now offer team-specific streaming packages, letting fans watch local teams without a full cable bundle, though pricing can still add up. • Risks of grey market streaming boxes: “Fully loaded” boxes offering free TV are often illegal, unreliable, and may expose users to malware. Stick to legitimate platforms like Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV. • Accessibility challenges and solutions: Callers highlighted issues with voice assistants misfiring and navigating smartphones without vision. Built-in tools like VoiceOver on iPhone and accessibility settings on Android can help, but setup often requires guidance. • Default app confusion on Windows: If PDFs open in Microsoft Word instead of a reader, it’s due to default app settings. Changing the default to a proper PDF viewer like Adobe Acrobat fixes the issue. • Waymo robotaxis and loss of human interaction: Autonomous rides are efficient but remove the human element, like asking drivers for local tips. Technology is increasingly transactional, reducing shared experiences. • New apps worth trying:– Acme Weather offers hyper-local forecasts, rainbow alerts, and multiple prediction models.– Dispo creates retro-style photos with delayed “film development” for a nostalgic effect. • Electric vehicle recall warning: Volvo is recalling thousands of EX30 EVs over potential battery fire risks, advising owners to limit charging and avoid parking near structures until fixed. • Bookmarking and link-saving tools: Apps like Raindrop.io and Plinky help organize saved websites with tags and cross-device syncing, offering better alternatives to traditional browser bookmarks. • Smart printer recommendations: Brother printers, especially ink tank models, are praised for reliability and low ink costs. Ink tanks are becoming more popular as a cost-effective alternative to cartridges. • Android luggage tracking update: Google’s Find Hub lets users share a tracker’s live location with airlines, similar to Apple AirTag sharing, helping recover lost bags more efficiently. • AI photo editing gets powerful: Tools like Google Gemini can now realistically add or remove people from photos with simple prompts, making advanced edits accessible to anyone. • AI personal productivity tools: Gemini can generate custom tools like link organizers or image resizers on demand, showing how AI is moving toward personalized software creation. • Deep personality AI test trend: A new app generates detailed psychological profiles and even lets users create a chatbot based on their personality. It’s insightful but raises privacy considerations. • Free iPhone cleanup app tip: Clever Cleaner is recommended for removing duplicate photos and freeing storage without ads or subscriptions, unlike many competing apps. Mac Versus PC: Choosing the Right Computer For Blind Users

Mac vs PC for blind users: which really delivers the best accessibility, performance, and everyday usability in 2025? Steven Scott and Shaun Preece are joined by Callum Stoneman and Marco Zehe to break down the strengths, weaknesses, and real-world experiences of both platforms. This lively discussion dives deep into the Mac versus PC debate for screen reader users. Callum shares his journey switching from a decade on Mac to Windows and now facing the tempting MacBook Neo. The panel explore core issues like VoiceOver’s quirks, Safari “not responding” frustrations, and the learning curve of macOS, alongside the reliability and flexibility of Windows with NVDA, JAWS, and Narrator. Marco offers insider perspective on browser behaviour, accessibility regressions, and improvements in macOS Sequoia and Tahoe. The group also cover ecosystem perks like AirDrop, iMessage, and WhatsApp on Mac versus Windows’ Phone Link limitations. By the end, listeners get a balanced, actionable look at choosing the right platform for productivity and accessibility. ---- Follow on: YouTube: https://www.doubletaponair.com/youtube X (formerly Twitter): https://www.doubletaponair.com/x Instagram: https://www.doubletaponair.com/instagram TikTok: https://www.doubletaponair.com/tiktok Threads: https://www.doubletaponair.com/threads Facebook: https://www.doubletaponair.com/facebook LinkedIn: https://www.doubletaponair.com/linkedin   Subscribe to the Podcast: Apple: https://www.doubletaponair.com/apple Spotify: https://www.doubletaponair.com/spotify RSS: https://www.doubletaponair.com/podcast iHeadRadio: https://www.doubletaponair.com/iheart   About Double Tap Hosted by the insightful duo, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece, Double Tap is a treasure trove of information for anyone who's blind or partially sighted and has a passion for tech. How Militarization, Language, And Policy Shape Modern Hacktivism (Anastasia Sentsova & Pedro Kertzman)

The moment a “hacktivist” group starts speaking with a state’s voice, the puzzle of attribution changes. We explore how Russian-speaking cybercrime transformed after 2022, why so many crews began to move in sync with national narratives, and what language, targeting, and coordination can reveal about influence without leaning on weak assumptions. Our guest, analyst Anastasia Sentsova, brings deep regional fluency and years of fieldwork to explain how militarization, culture, and policy shape a pipeline that normalizes digital action and pulls volunteers toward more aggressive operations. We walk through the rise of coordinated Telegram ecosystems, including bot-driven “cyber squads” that gamify propaganda with ranks, points, and real-world rewards. That may sound harmless, but it builds habits, grows networks, and legitimizes escalation. From there, it’s a short step to DDoS—and increasingly—intrusions that touch critical infrastructure. We also examine the ransomware world’s political boundaries: no-go lists that evolved from domestic targets to BRICS countries, selective law enforcement pressure following diplomatic milestones, and the unspoken bargain that keeps operators productive so long as they toe the line. Rather than force-fit labels like sponsored or tolerated, we talk about influence as a measurable spectrum. Indicators include state rhetoric in native-language posts, synchronized activity with kinetic events, target selection aligned with policy goals, and public signaling when named individuals “celebrate” sanctions without consequence. For practitioners, we offer concrete ways to avoid Western bias, validate translations, and build multi-source cases with explicit confidence levels. And we look ahead: the proxy model travels, youth pipelines deepen skills, and hybrid operations blur the boundary between hacktivists and APTs. 59. Getting Hired in UX: What to Do When Apply-and-Wait Isn't Enough

Navigating the UX job market has always had its ups and downs, especially with AI reshaping the industry. In this episode, host Laura Klein sits down with Evan Sunwall, NN/G's Director of Self-Paced Training, to share candid advice for UX practitioners trying to actively job search or level up in today's competitive market. With nearly 19 years in the field as both a designer and a hiring manager, he has a lot to say about where the field is headed — no matter what stage you're at in your career. That experience is also what shaped Evan's self-paced course on getting a job in UX, part of NN/G's new and growing library of practical, pre-recorded courses built around real skill gaps. Evan was one of the first to help develop the format — running experiments and prototypes to figure out what actually works for self-directed learners. Evan also previews a companion course aimed at hiring managers and shares that he's looking for sharp instructors to help expand the library into new topics across research, design, and AI.
