Identity Check is a daily two-minute reflection on where your identity actually comes from, hosted by Aaron Beauclair. The premise is simple and it runs against most of how we live. You are loved and chosen by God before you have produced anything, that truth does not move when your results do, and mission flows out of it instead of earning it. Most of us have the order reversed, and we tie our worth to our to do list. Not achieving feels like a verdict on who we are.     Resting in Truth Instead of Comparing Myself

    Today I keep coming back to the elder son in the parable, and how busy he is comparing himself to his brother, counting up all the years he served and never once disobeyed. He does everything right and he is still unhappy, and I think it is because the comparing crowded out any real living. The younger son gets a lot wrong, and at least he lives, and what I want is the other kind of freedom, a restful freedom that comes from being with the Father rather than proving something to him. I am loved no matter what, and I will always be his son, and my prayer today is to live from that truth.

    Chosen Out of Love and Created on Purpose

    Today was mostly running around, and in the middle of it I kept coming back to the fact that God chose me and created me for a purpose out of love. He did not have to do that, and he wanted to, which is where my identity actually rests. I am grateful for the wins from today, and I want to be just as grateful for the places I fell short, because his love does not move either way.

    Living My Mission From a Fixed Identity

    I keep coming back to the order of things, because my mission flows out of the identity the Father gives me and not the other way around. For a long time I assumed that a real conversion of heart would turn my life a full 180, and what I am finding instead is something quieter, like handing work to a client without bracing for their reaction or letting it decide whether I am good or loved. I want to deliver my best work with peace in my heart, and I want to keep getting better without the angst of performing for approval. No performance makes God love me more or love me less, and remembering that lets me rest and simply do the work in front of me.

    Identity From Relationship and the Father's Love

    What struck me this morning is that identity grows out of relationship, and I noticed how much time I spend wishing a situation had gone differently instead of seeing the gifts that are actually in front of me. When I sat with the Father's love and his desire that everything he has is mine, what I have to be thankful for turned out to be immeasurable. I asked for the grace to keep that slight shift of perspective, to look for what is good and what he gives rather than what is lacking. Even having my eyes opened to it felt like a gift worth thanking him for.

    The Quiet Confidence of Knowing God's Love

    When I remember that the Father actually accepts me and does not just tolerate me, what rises up is a quiet confidence instead of a performance, and I can go about my day without needing to prove anything. I keep coming back to Jesus hearing that he was the beloved Son, and how being secure in that love let him face the people who opposed him. I talk about the walls and stumbling blocks I run into in my own work, and how remembering that God calls me son changes what those obstacles mean, because I still need to use my gifts to get through them and the success of the mission was never mine to carry. I am loved either way.

    Getting My Identity From God, Not People

    I was reminded today that my identity has to come from God, and that every time I try to get it from someone else I end up tossed around by how they feel about me. I thought about my marriage, and how trying to find security in winning my wife's affection never really holds, because there are plenty of days when she is frustrated with me or I mess something up. My identity cannot rest on my performance or on her view of me or even my own view of me, and it has to come from how God sees me instead. His view never changes, so who I am is always a son, no matter what.

    Being a Son Without the Fear of Mistakes

    I keep coming back to the elder son in the prodigal son parable, the one who stays home and slowly comes to believe he has to perform in order to be a son. Any mistake feels like it would cost him everything, and then the father comes out and tells him you are with me always and all that I have is yours, which is truth spoken into him rather than a wage he earned. My challenge is to hear those words as mine, because when I do I stop living small out of fear of getting it wrong or of doing only what other people expect. Mission comes out of that relationship instead of running ahead of it, and there is so much more peace here, and I can rest.

    I Am Loved Because of Who He Is

    A reminder I needed today. I am loved, I am a son, I am called and chosen, and I am fearfully and wonderfully made, just as I am. None of that rests on what I get done, and nothing I do can damage the truth of it.

    God Is Perfect Love Between Father and Son

    Who God is, before anything else. The Father gives himself completely to the Son and the Son gives himself completely back, and neither one holds anything back. That love is so complete that the Holy Spirit is a person between them. This is the first thing, and it does not change, always and forever.

    Where Your Identity Actually Comes From

    The first day of the series, and the reason for it. I get tossed around by the world and start putting my value in what I produce, so that failing starts to feel like being worthless. The truth is that our identity comes from a God who never changes, which means it does not change either, and mission flows out of that place rather than earning it.
