    Welcome to a new season of the Sophisticated Black Man podcast! If you can believe it, this is year 6 of the podcast and I'm hoping to get back on track with topics to talk about that we have yet to discuss. In the season premiere episode, we're talking about lawn care and maintenance. I talk about my history when it comes to lawn care, which includes my mother doing most of the lawn care for my childhood home, how it became a bonding experience for my dad and myself, and why I think it'll be a great bonding experience for my son and I. We then talk about what lawn care is going on at the house and how another friendly neighborhood black man is helping me on that journey and how to get the best out of your lawn. Thank you for sticking with me through the ups and downs through 6 seasons of the podcast! I am extremely thankful for all of your support with this podcast! Here's to 6 more!

    S5E2: Coach Burke is stepping away..

    The title of this episode is not a joke. I am stepping away from coaching. I don't want to say I'm retiring or I'm quitting coaching because I don't quit something I love to do. I chose to step away from coaching/was essentially forced to step away from coaching. Both of these factors are explained. I chose to step away from coaching because I want to help raise my newborn son alongside my wife. I was forced to step away because of the county I teach in does not care about athletics.     S5E1.5: Black Men and Education Part 1.5: The State of Public Education

    As a disclaimer, the words spoken in this episode are of my own accord and a right of free speech. With that disclaimer out of the way, today's episode talks about the state of education (specifically public education), how school choice will lead more parents to sending their kids to private school over public school, and why that is beneficial for some. I also provide some personal examples of the major factors of the decline of education, and I explain how I am more than a "classroom teacher". Plus there are some small life updates as well. Again, this is a work of art and literature. Educators in different states, if you're experiencing or have experienced sorta the same things, please let me know! Enjoy!

    In this 2 of 2 doubleheader episode of this week, I April Fools prank you with an episode about lawn care and maintenance and talk about something that has been embedded in the African-American culture and that is of course the cookout. I talk about the origins of the cookout, with its beginnings in the Native American culture and how it lead to a complex relationship between Natives and Black people, plus about how to spot signs that your food may or may not be good. Plus, I reminisce about my childhood cookout memories and the love and jubilee spread during those times. Finally, it's the Wrap Up.     In this 1 of 2 scheduled doubleheader for this week, we talk about the topic that a lot of you probably weren't thinking about, but wondered about and that is time or the concept of it. Let's be honest, 24 hours in a day isn't enough for most people to do any and all things they want to do. We talk about the origins of time. how your circadian rhythm plays into that effect and why the tern "CPT" is actually detrimental to Black culture. I also give a break down of what my daily schedule looks like and why I think 30 hours of Mars still wouldn't be enough to accomplish what I would want to do. Then it's the Wrap Up.

    S4E1: Black People and Comic Books Part 1: This is Bulletproof Love

    In this first episode of the new year and first episode of this series, I explore more of the nerdier side of things and that is comic books. We've all heard Captain America, Iron Man, Spiderman, Superman, etc. But what about Lion Man? Ace Harlem? Lobo? Luke Cage, Black Panther? Spawn? These are just some of the most influential black comic book characters that we in the black community have come to appreciate. We talk about the origin of black superheroes, the first Black comic book, how it lead to the creation of black superheroes in comics and how those creations have lead to the landscape we have today of Black Comic book characters. I also talk about my favorite Black Comic book characters and my favorite non-Black Comic book character (who, in a sense, can relate to the Black struggle). So, kick off your shoes, relax your feet, and enjoy listening to this episode on MLK Day! Sweet Christmas!
