    Surprise! Our 10th anniversary live show gets wild

    Now or Never celebrates ten years of diving in with people as they gather the courage to take a leap into the unknown, with a live show from Winnipeg's Gas Station Arts Centre! There are always surprises in a Now or Never story, and this live show is no exception.  Winnipeg couple Trish Cooper and Sam Vint’s life together has been filled with hilarious and surprising (mis)adventures together, including culture shock on the rez, surprise gummy overdoses, and discovering your partner is an accidental fugitive. After 23 years together, can Sam pull off a surprise for Trish live on stage? Musician Boy Golden shares songs from his new album, and a truly jaw-dropping story from the road.  Now or Never all-star Vivian Ketchum is back for a record fifth appearance on the show. We were there when she graduated high school at 58, sat on her bed as she shared the residential school memories that keep her up at night, and joined her at the post office opening letters from Canadians across the country sharing their reconciliation commitments. What is Vivian up to now? Dating! Hear her raw and unfiltered takes on sex and dating in her sixties. Two months ago, Jo Dworschak quit her job to follow her dream of being a full-time storyteller and comedian. She joins us on stage to share how fixing a broken elevator in a bathing suit at 17, lit the spark for the life she’s living today. Hundreds of Canadians have shared their stories on Now or Never over the years. Can Ify and Trevor remember them all? We challenge them with a game of "Guess the Guest," as past guests pop up on stage with three clues, while a blindfolded Trevor and Ify try to figure out who they are. Plus, Ify and Trevor try their best to surprise each other.

    Breakups are hard! How to get over a heartbreak

    Breakups can look a lot of different ways: slow dissolves, out-of-nowhere blow-outs, mutual partings-of-ways. But the truth is, they all hurt. Today on Now or Never, we revisit the stories of people in the thick of it, and the surprising ways they're getting through. When Litia Fleming broke up with Richard Kemick after 10 years together, it came as a shock to Richard. But two weeks later, they got an even bigger jolt: Litia was pregnant. Find out how these exes are juggling new parenthood, dating, and the joys and challenges of living together after breaking up. After a painful divorce, Saba Ahmad vowed to go to law school and become the lawyer she never had. She graduated last spring, and is providing support to other South Asian women facing the end of a marriage, as she pursues her last steps to becoming a lawyer. Three years ago, exhausted from all the arguing, nagging and fighting, Jessyka and Jordan Hagen called it quits — only to realize their breakup would eventually save their marriage. Host Ify Chiwetelu heads to Next Generation Arts, a youth arts organization in Scarborough, to learn lessons on wading through heartbreak. And we crash a support group helping men talk about their emotions after a breakup - but if you’re late, expect to do push-ups.

    How do you save a community that's on life support?

    Towns and neighbourhoods all across the country are facing their own challenges. Now or Never is flying into a few to find out what it really takes to hold a community together, when everything's trying to pull it apart.  Little Jamaica has been the heart of Toronto for generations of Caribbean and African residents and entrepreneurs. Then the subway came. It took 15 years of constant construction to build the new line. It meant years of constant headaches for business owners. Now the ones who are left say they need more than community spirit to stay alive and vibrant. Jason McDonald, the owner of a beauty salon in the area and chair of the Little Jamaica BIA, shares what's at stake and takes us on a tour of the neighbourhood. It took far longer to start an intentional community from scratch than Ron Berezan anticipated. But after a decade, construction equipment is in the ground at Blueberry Commons in Powell River, B.C., a co-housing project where everyone farms the same land, shares amenities, and makes decisions together. They plan on opening this summer, but there’s still a lot to do before Ron and the team’s dream officially becomes reality.  There’s a revolution going on inside Winnipeg’s Good and Plenty Arts Collective Clubhouse, where women and gender diverse musicians take the lead and learn the techniques of music production, creating community along the way. Lana Winterhalt and Veronica Blackhawk tell us why that's so important. The remote town of Faro, Yukon has surplus housing at prices that are rare to find in other parts of the country — and mayor Jack Bowers is trying to convince people to move in. The town’s population dropped significantly after a zinc mine in the community shut down in the '90s. Jack says Faro has slowly been rising from the ashes since, but more people need to move in for the town to sustain itself in the long-term. Darrell Warren is determined to fight crime in his neighbourhood. At 64 years old he’s voluntarily staking out drug houses in Winnipeg’s north end, and starting a tip line so other community members can come forward as witnesses, and help him try to make change. But is it safe?

    You vs Everybody: How far would you go to compete?

    The fire to compete can drive you to push against your limits, and go further than you knew possible. On this episode of Now or Never, competitive hosts Ify Chiwetelu and Trevor Dineen introduce you to people vying to win, and putting in the work to come out on top.  Identical twins Miriam and Ruth Turk have been competing with each other for as long as they remember. So what happened when they faced each other for gold in freestyle wrestling at the Manitoba Winter Games? And who do their super competitive parents cheer for? Dave Sproull has been playing darts for over a decade, but having recently turned 55 - and having experienced a serious and life-altering illness - he’s finally getting serious about competition, and is determined to earn a spot on the Darts World Rankings. For as long as he can remember, Aaron Brown has dreamed of competing on his favourite gameshow, Jeopardy. He walked around with a clicker and quit his day job to host weekly quiz nights in Toronto. So what happened when Aaron finally made it on as a contestant to the real-life Jeopardy?  K-pop has taken the world by storm, and Toronto’s Hyun Byun is determined to make his mark in it. When he’s not studying as a high school student, he’s busy practicing his singing and dancing in hopes of becoming a K-pop idol. Not many people make it big – but, Hyun says failure doesn’t feel like an option.  Plus a new contest where you can win a pair of tickets to Now or Never’s live show in Winnipeg, and music from Cameron Whitcomb and Boy Golden.

    Time served: What's life after jail really like?

    Today an estimated 35,000 Canadians are behind bars in a provincial or federal prison. But what happens to people once they get out? Transitioning back into society can be challenging, with barriers around housing, employment, and the stigma of a criminal record. According to one study, around 70 per cent of inmates with addiction or mental health issues end up back in prison within three years. So what does it take to rebuild your life after incarceration? On this episode, meet former and current inmates doing the hard work of repairing relationships, finding a job, and staying sober. Yassir Kassam spent the last 30 years in and out of jail, drawing his family into his cycle of addiction and deception. Today, seven months out, Yassir sits down with his younger brother Omer for an honest conversation about the impacts of his actions on both of them, and what it takes to trust and move forward. When Darcy Beardy got released from prison last August, he had a hard time finding a job — until he met Sean Rayland-Boubar. Sean knows first-hand the challenges of turning your life around after prison, so he created Red Rebel Armour, an Indigenous streetwear company with the mission of giving a second chance to men just out of prison. Darcy and Sean talk mentorship, responsibility, and what it takes to "walk the good path." “I’ll either be doing life in prison, or I’ll be dead.” That’s what former foster kid and current gang member Devon Henderson told Now or Never producer Bridget Forbes this summer, after picking up a gun for the first time in his life. But when they first met five years ago, Devon’s future looked hopeful. So what happened? And is there any way Devon can see a third option? Bridget goes behind bars for a face-to-face conversation with Devon.

    Sick of swiping? We're finding love IRL

    As more Gen Z and Millennial daters turn away from dating apps and report ‘swipe fatigue,’ people are looking to find love in the wild again. The problem is, we’re a little rusty. So on this episode, Now or Never takes you into some real-life dating stories as people take the first tentative steps to find love IRL.  What better way to boost your dating profile than having your friends hype you up to a crowd of fellow singles? That's the idea behind Pitch-a-Friend nights, where people pitch what makes their single besties so awesome in a five-minute PowerPoint presentation. We crash a Pitch-a-Friend night in Edmonton to find out if any real-life connections are made. When Lisa Cordileone’s marriage ended 11 years ago, she headed online looking for connection, but apps proved a bust. Trying to date in her small-town in northern Manitoba also made things tough. So last year, she moved to Winnipeg hoping to expand her dating pool. Now, for the first time, she’s putting herself out there at a singles event at a Winnipeg pool hall, and we get to tag along. Stella Isaac is embracing solo dating. She's open to partnership, but the online and in-person experiences she's had as a dark skinned Black woman in Toronto have made that difficult. Stella invites us along for one of her solo date nights to talk about why these dates have served as the best form of self-care. Single dad Richard Kemick is looking to dip his toe into the dating world again. There’s just one problem. His living situation is a little…complicated. And tough to sum up in the six minutes he has to make a good first impression at a speed-dating event in Vancouver this weekend. So Ify does a few practice runs with Richard on his opening lines, and finds out why it's so important for him to disclose everything on a first date. After struggling on the dating apps, 29-year-old investment advisor Kyle Long is breaking out of his shell and trying to find love on the dance floor at salsa class – despite being a self-described introvert with two left feet.  And an update with Krista Nugent, the real estate agent in Victoria who made headlines last year for a dating application she posted on her Instagram that said, like any realtor, she was open to referrals. Did she end up finding the one?

    'He wouldn't have made it another 12 hours.' Stories of racing against the clock

    At some point we all feel the squeeze of the clock. On this episode, every story is a race against time. If you get lost in B.C.'s wilderness, search and rescue volunteer Evan Johnson jumps into action, knowing he's in a race against time that can mean the difference between life and death. As an Afghanistan vet, Evan’s seen what no one should. So why would someone with PTSD volunteer to do this job? When Zeda Ali isn’t counting out beats for her students on the steel pan, she’s counting down the days to what could be the biggest moment of her career: the 55th Juno Awards. Zeda is one of five teachers from across the country nominated for the music teacher of the year award. She tells us what a win – and a substantial cash prize – would mean to her students in Brampton, Ont.  While most people his age are looking to the future, 26-year-old Zach Dunn is working to preserve the past. For the last five years he's traveled the country recording stories from WWII veterans, before it's too late. And that's because Zach knows from personal experience what it feels like to miss out on the chance to hear these stories first-hand.  Amy Cameron and Joe Ross had plans to spend their retirement years biking, traveling and living life to the fullest. But when Amy was suddenly diagnosed with early onset dementia, they realized that their future was going to look different. Now the two are living life together knowing that at some point, the brain disorder will fully take over.

    After addiction, a mom fights to regain her daughter's trust

    For years, Melissa MacMillan's opioid addiction brought chaos to her life - especially with her daughter Eden. Now, almost five years into recovery, Melissa and Eden share the tough conversations they're having as they try to rebuild their relationship. What does it take to be truly 'out of the woods,' getting through one big life hurdle, only to face a whole new set of challenges? That's what this episode of Now or Never is all about. A few weeks ago, Lisa de Lusignan wrote in to Now or Never to tell us about losing her husband to ALS, and the surprising thing helping her through her grief: pickleball. So of course we called her up, to find out how joy and sadness co-exist on the pickleball courts. “Nobody looked at me like, ‘Oh geez, I hope she’s OK today.' Which is fine! And lovely for people to do that. But sometimes I just want to be a girl coming to play pickleball, not the sad wife." Since coming to Canada from Eritrea 23 years ago, Alazar Beyene has been giving new life to old shoes. But with the rise of fast fashion, business declined, so when his old patching machine broke down, Alazar was thinking about changing careers. Enter Marsha Shandur and her beloved winter boots. How Marsha turned to the power of the people for help to replace Alazar’s machine.  Mary Howley is on the hunt for a part-time job. She worked in the financial industry for nearly 30 years, but living as a single retiree in Ontario isn’t as financially secure or care-free as she’d hoped. Tiffany Bird went 25 years without ever consuming a vegetable. She has ARFID, a fairly new and often misunderstood eating disorder that significantly restricts the volume and variety of foods people eat. For decades, the condition consumed her life and her health. Today, Tiffany is learning to accept that she may never be free of ARFID.
