Prosecution Declined, Update: The Hearing

Jen Sainato had been waiting for this day for a long time. She’d woken up early, put on her black striped suit, and drove five hours to attend the Louisville Metro Council’s public safety committee meeting. The council had called the police to answer questions about their handling of rape cases, in the wake of our story about Jen’s case. When Jen walked into the council chamber, the police were already settled in at the front of the room: two press people, a few men in suits, and Lt. Shannon Lauder — the head of the special victims unit, who’d been called by the council to explain why her department clears so few rape cases by arrest, and so many “by exception.” The eight metro council members in attendance were seated as well, looking out at the room from their elevated seats. And in the audience sat the survivors — women who had reported a rape to the Louisville Metro Police Department. Women who were inspired by Jen’s story to come out and seek their own answers. Chef Edward Lee | 'Things change because we plant seeds'

We’re back with an all-new season, and our first guest is Chef Edward Lee. When he was around 11, he told his parents he wanted to be a chef. “They were like, sure, and Bobby’s gonna be an astronaut. Great.” He never changed his mind about that calling. But along the way, he added other titles to his bio. Like author, small business owner, mentor, philanthropist, and yes, TV personality, though that’s his least favorite to talk about. We sat down with him to talk about the link between food and identity, his work with The Lee Initiative, and the incremental nature of saving the world. "Change doesn't happen because one person waves a magic wand," he says. "Change happens because millions of people do millions of small things." The power of the pause

This episode of “Words For The People” begins with Kentucky Poet Laureate Crystal Wilkinson and guest author Hannah Drake sharing a powerful conversation about their journeys with resilience. They discuss the perpetuation of the “strong Black woman” stereotype that has included the burden of taking care of families, working for social justice in communities, and laboring to fix a broken country. This has come at a cost. “We’re tired of being resilient all the time,” explains Hannah as she speaks to the necessity of taking care of oneself and not just others. For the sake of health and sanity, we all need to learn to sit with silence, although it may be uncomfortable. In fact, there is no growth, healing, or truth telling without this space to listen. They share the simple advice, “go lay down.” And they shout The Nap Ministry, which declares “rest is resistance.” Crystal and Hannah also encourage listeners to actively create a space that renews you, be it a garden, a prayer room, or just a place to take off your cape for a while. In these acts of radical self-care, they find that endurance and liberation are possible. Hannah also shares her extraordinary poem, “Fix It Black Girl,” and explains why she speaks and writes about this topic. “I really want black women to be free.” Hannah is an artist with the Unknown Project, and you can read more of her writing at hannahldrake.com. Crystal then considers what a resilient life looks like with emerging Affrilachian poet Danni Quintos. Danni admits she processes a lot through her writing, although it may not go out into the world. “If it’s something that helps you heal, then it’s doing its job,” Danni reminds us. When it comes to the constant hustle writers face to publish, she believes we must give ourselves “the grace to not be productive.” Danni, who met Crystal almost 20 years ago through the Governor’s School for the Arts, also speaks of the restorative nature of her literary community and the Kentucky writers of color who encouraged her to write about the things she came from.
