Cory Wong

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and songwriter Cory Wong, whose intricate rhythmic style and eclectic solo projects have propelled him to prominence in the jazz and funk world. Widely exalted for his ambitious and genre-fusing solo projects, Wong has also received critical recognition for his playing with Vulfpeck, who have erupted through the underground indie scene to plant themselves as a modern-day staple for funk music listeners. In 2019, Vulfpeck became the first band without a label or manager to sell out Madison Square Garden, and throughout 2020 Wong has worked to continue to push new boundaries with his music. Musically nurtured in Minneapolis jazz clubs by former members of Prince’s band, Wong has developed a uniquely percussive rhythm technique. In this episode, Kraz and Cory talk about the influences that lead to Wong’s stylistic development, dive in-depth on songwriting and recording, and deconstruct life as a musician. Wherever Socks Get Lost

In episode three of Transmissions From Deep Ellum, the band finally takes the stage to record the Grammy®-nominated Empire Central and they have to ask themselves - do they still know how to record a live studio album? Descending upon Dallas' Deep Ellum Art Company to record, the bar is as high as ever - even for a band as accomplished as Snarky Puppy. You’ll hear from longtime audio engineer Mike Harrison on how he captures their complex sound and improvisational performance; and, get a firsthand account of the recording process as if you were in the room experiencing the unique character of the Empire Central sessions - not a proper studio recording session, but also not a traditional live gig. Perspectives from the band members guide you through how they communicate and collaborate during the process, to ultimately achieve the sound that is Snarky Puppy. Snarky Puppy seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical- or most carefree- audience. After a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/New York-based quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for all four of the band’s Grammy® awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016, 2017, and 2021), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.” Transmissions From Deep Ellum is produced by Eric Lense and Jamie Margulies of GroundUp Music, and is narrated by Alex Ariff. Charlie Hunter

This week on Eric Krasno Plus One, Kraz talks with guitarist Charlie Hunter, who’s one-of-a-kind approach to the instrument has helped revolutionize it. He plays 7 and 8-string guitars, oftentimes playing chords, melodies, and basslines simultaneously, which he and Kraz discuss in the episode. Hunter has played in several highly respected groups, but most notably Garage a Trois, which he co-founded in 1998. He also played on D'Angelo's legendary Voodoo album, which has featured several other Plus One guests to date. In this conversation, Kraz and Hunter dive into Hunter’s start as a professional musician when he was busking in Europe, how he started playing 7 and 8-string guitars, changes in his interpretation of the musical language as he’s gotten older, and much more. Dick’s Picks Vol. 36 — 9/21/72 Philadelphia, PA

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault, we celebrate the Series Finale of Dick’s Picks as well as the Series Finale of 36 From The Vault. Featuring a complete show from Philadelphia, PA on 9/21/72, we also hear segments of 9/3/72 from Boulder, CO. One of the greatest Dick’s Picks of all time, it’s a fitting conclusion to the series and yet another showcase of the brilliance of September 1972. Disc One features the majority of Set One from 9/21/72 which includes a brilliant “Bird Song” as well a stunning take on “Loser.” A loose and vibey “China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider” showcases the standards heavy Set I played with exceptional verve. Disc Two straddles Set One and Two from 9/21/71 and is highlighted by an outstanding “Playing In The Band” closer before “He’s Gone>Truckin’” brings us into the second frame. An elongated 4+hr show, the staple of Disc Three is an absolutely incredible “Dark Star>Morning Dew.” Nearly 50min of stunning music, including 35+min of deep 1972 jamming, this is one of the greatest pieces of music released in the entire Dick’s Picks series. Disc Four closes out the Spectrum show before giving us a three song snapshot from Folsom Field with “He’s Gone> The Other One> Wharf Rat.” And with that, we’ve finally reached the end of the Dick’s Picks series.
