Orofacial Pain (OFP) is the specialty of dentistry that encompasses the diagnosis, management and treatment of pain disorders of the jaw, mouth, face and associated regions. The specialty of OFP is dedicated to the evidenced-based understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, etiology, prevention, and treatment of these disorders and improving access to interdisciplinary patient care. These disorders as they relate to orofacial pain include but are not limited to temporomandibular muscle and joint (TMJ) disorders, jaw movement disorders, neuropathic and neurovascular pain disorders, headache, and sleep disorders.

    Dr. Konstantin Slavin is Professor and Chief of Section and Fellowship Director for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Dr. Slavin graduated from medical school in Baku, Azerbaijan in the Soviet Union and completed his neurosurgery residency in Moscow. He then completed his second neurosurgery residency at UIC and a fellowship in functional and stereotactic neurosurgery at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Slavin is current President of the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and the Past President of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. He is also the President-Elect of the International Neuromodulation Society (INS) and past Secretary of the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS). For many years, he serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Facial Pain Association, the premier patient organization for those who suffer from trigeminal neuralgia and other facial pain syndromes. In addition, he is on the Board of non profit organization “Neuromodulation Foundation”, the publisher of Wikistim, and for more than a decade was an Executive Committee member of the Joint Section on Pain of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Slavin has published in many books and peer-reviewed journals and is an associate editor or editorial board member for a number of publications, including Neuromodulation, Neurosurgery, Brain Sciences, Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, Acta Neurochirurgica and others; he is the current editor-in-chief of Progress in Neurological Surgery. His first book on Peripheral Nerve Stimulation was published in 2011; another book, co-edited with Sam Eljamel on Neurostimulation: Practice and Principles, came out in 2013; the third one, Stimulation of Peripheral Nervous System: The Neuromodulation Frontier was released in 2015. The most recent – and most relevant for this audience – book on Neuromodulation for Facial Pain came out in 2021.

    Dr. Nojan Bakthiari graduated from New York University College of Dentistry in 2011, followed by a 1-year General Practice Dentistry Program at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. He then completed a 2-year CODA-accredited Orofacial Pain program at New York University College of Dentistry. He started a private practice part time while teaching part time at Yale New Haven Hospital, Oral Surgery Department. Later on, he led the Orofacial Pain didactic and clinical curriculum at the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine. Currently, he has an academic appointment at Columbia University but spends the majority of his time in his own private practice. His practice is one of the few ones which from it's inception was limited to evidence-based care of temporomandibular disorders, orofacial pain and associated headaches. He also serves on the Board of Directors at the New York University Dentistry Alumni Association and the Executive Council of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.     Dr. Boggero is the Director of Psychological Services and Director of Research at the University of Kentucky Orofacial Pain Clinic. He completed his undergraduate education at UCLA and obtained his Ph. D. in clinical psychology from the University of Kentucky, with a graduate certificate in biostatistics. After his Ph.D. he completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His research interests are in developing brief psychological interventions for improving pain and fatigue in patients with chronic pain. His work has been funded by the NIH and the American Psychological Association among other organizations and has been published in top pain journals.

    Dr. Janey Prodoehl is a Professor in the Physical Therapy Program and College of Dental Medicine Illinois at Midwestern University Downers Grove, Illinois. She completed her entry level physical therapy degree in Leeds, England, an advanced Master of Science degree in physical therapy at Rosalind Franklin University, and doctoral and post-doctoral studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has over 30 years of experience as a physical therapist primarily in out-patient orthopedic settings and was certified as an orthopedic clinical specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Her doctoral studies examined motor control in focal dystonia, and her post-doctoral work examined functional and structural neuroimaging in patients with movement problems. She sees patients in the Physical Therapy Institute at Midwestern University with a physical therapy practice focused on neck pain, orofacial pain and headache, and dry needling for musculoskeletal dysfunction. Her research focus is to ask questions related to motor control that will lead to an improved understanding of musculoskeletal movement dysfunction particularly as it relates to orofacial pain and postural dysfunction. Dr. Prodoehl has authored numerous publications from her work. She is a Certified Cervical & Temporomandibular Therapist by the Physical Therapy Board of Craniofacial & Cervical Therapeutics. She is currently leading a team in the development of a national clinical practice guideline sponsored by the Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy, a section of the American Physical Therapy Association, on Temporomandibular disorders: diagnosis and management for physical therapists.

    Flavia P. Kapos, DDS, MS, PhD is a postdoctoral fellow at the Pediatric Pain and Sleep Innovations Lab at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. She is a pain epidemiologist and diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. Dr. Kapos completed her DDS training at the University of São Paulo School of Dentistry and her MS and orofacial pain residency at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. She earned her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health where she was an NIH/NIDCR R90 trainee focused on the social determinants of chronic pain in the United States. Her current research is focused on life course and intergenerational mechanisms of pain inequities.
