David & Stu... Unhinged!

David & Stu

“David & Stu . . . Unhinged!” offers a unique glimpse into the world's most pressing (and most trivial) issues through the eyes of two of Greenwich Village’s jaded residents, who are usually pissed off about something. From allowing people to legally sh** on our sidewalks to "discrimination" against fat people, David Simonetti, a writer and attorney, and Stu Richel, a critically acclaimed actor, screenwriter, and Vietnam War vet, offer an acerbic yet civilized perspective on politics and life in New York City. Occasionally veering into the abyss of rage, like Stu's unbridled contempt for Jane Fonda and David's rage about those who ask for ice cream samples, the duo from two different generations will enchant you with their common-sense reactions speckled with off-the-rails humor, anger, and dismay.

87: MAGA Crime Spree, Teen DUI, Noem Scandal & Gridlock Karma.

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 87th episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics: (1) Trump has spent hours bashing Democrats for being soft on crime, yet he pardoned 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6 riots, some of whom had prior convictions for violent or sexual crimes and reoffended after release. This makes you wonder who is really soft on crime since Trump has seriously jeopardized public safety by allowing dangerous individuals to return to American streets, making him look worse than progressive prosecutors like Fat Alvin Bragg. (2) A 14-year-old mother was driving on I-64 in Hampton, VA, without a license, allegedly drunk, with a 1-year-old not properly restrained, before a crash that killed the child. We will discuss this tragic story, including the criminal charges and the potential civil/insurance nightmare that encompasses wrongful death, coverage fights, and who else could be on the hook. (3) Although the GOP promotes "family values," President Trump and his appointees have been involved in scandals ranging from infidelity to corruption. Kristi Noem was dismissed due to incompetence and scandal, and her husband, Bryon Noem's online activity undermines claims of moral superiority. Such discrepancies between public image and private conduct raise concerns about blackmail risks and credibility. (4) Congestion pricing has worked in cities worldwide—including New York—despite Trump’s dramatic threats to kill it. A judge shut him down, but the prospect of Trump admitting he was wrong remains about as likely as rush-hour traffic disappearing. We hope you tune in, and please leave comments. 86: Stu’s Christian Mingle, Miami Rebound, Real Baseball, & Mission Not Accomplished

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 86th episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics: (1) Stu will delve deeper into his recent encounter with a group of Christian students from a Florida high school whom he met in Washington Square Park last month. The students impressed Stu with their intelligence and thoughtful questions about faith. They were also eager to learn about his Vietnam experience, his stage play “Vietnam...through my lens,” and how his ongoing struggle with sciatica might impact his future gigs. Following this meeting, the group’s chaperone has kept the conversation going with Stu through email—an intriguing development. (2) After writing off Miami Beach as a post-COVID circus, David returned five years later to find a city that’s largely back on its feet—fantastic weather, great beach days, and plenty to enjoy—though still showing a few scars in shuttered storefronts and ongoing improvements. The trip was also elevated by a visit to Little Havana, where the Cuban exile story adds depth and a more grounded counterpoint to the myths, missteps, and politics that have shaped both Cuba and Miami. (3) The World Baseball Classic (WBC) took place just before the MLB season opener on March 25. International teams competed with lively enthusiasm, celebrating every run and playing with infectious joy. This spirited energy highlighted baseball’s global appeal and contrasted with the more reserved style often seen in Major League Baseball. In this episode, we’ll explore standout moments from the WBC and what makes it such a must-watch for fans. (4) A discussion of a recent Telegraph article by David Blair, which—unlike the usual noise—offers a more grounded view of the Iran conflict, arguing that despite U.S. strikes, Iran can still claim success if its regime endures, maintains influence, and continues imposing costs, all while exposing the absence of a coherent U.S. strategy and a clear definition of what “victory” is supposed to look like. 85: MAGA Extortion, Trump’s Degenerate Art, & Influencer Hell

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 85th episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics: (1) The Trump administration is reportedly considering using U.S. HIV/AIDS aid to Zambia as leverage in negotiations over access to the country’s valuable mineral sector, particularly copper and cobalt. Because roughly 1.3 million Zambians rely on U.S.-funded HIV treatment, the proposal raises moral issues for tying life-saving health assistance to economic and geopolitical objectives. (2) The Trump administration and its sycophants have been targeting cultural institutions and arts funding, including controversial actions like the mismanagement and temporary closure of the Kennedy Center, attempts to alter the White House's historic architecture, and efforts to diminish support for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Now we have learned that the NEA is awarding a major federal grant to the traditionally-focused Grand Central Atelier, raising suspicions of political favoritism due to the school’s conservative artistic ties. (3) Amid ongoing economic strain caused by U.S. sanctions, reduced external support, and internal inefficiencies, Cuba is now taking limited steps to open its economy, including cautiously allowing Cubans living abroad to invest in small private businesses. Trump’s past approach in these scenarios suggests he would likely pursue a more transactional strategy, seeking additional economic or political concessions in exchange for any easing of sanctions. As a result, Cuba’s tentative outreach to its diaspora may face pressure in a tougher negotiating environment. (4) David recounts this annual visit to the New York Botanical Gardens for the Orchid Show, reflecting on how this year's theme, "Mr. Flower Fantastic’s Concrete Jungle," was less vibrant and more crowded than previous years. He was also disgusted by the social influencers who, in their pursuit of perfect photos, disrupt both the exhibit and the authentic atmosphere of nearby Arthur Avenue, a traditionally Italian American neighborhood now facing increased crowds due to online promotion. Despite appreciating the food and local culture, David laments the impact of social media on these cherished traditions. We hope you tune in, and please leave comments. 84: A Deadly Prank, a Gilded Refuge, Winner v. Whiner, & Bridge Janitor

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 84th episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics: 1. In March 2026, high school teacher Jason Hughes was fatally run over after confronting teens who were toilet-papering his yard as a prom prank, and 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide. Although Hughes’s widow has asked that charges be dropped, prosecutorial discretion rests with the district attorney. The charge to be dropped depends on whether Wallace is found to have driven recklessly. 2. Over the weekend, David visited the Frick Collection, finding solace in its elegant art and serene atmosphere amidst New York’s chaos and the current turbulent political climate. The museum’s restraint and preservation of charm contrast sharply with the self-indulgence and instability seen in today’s leadership, particularly Trump’s recent actions in Iran. The Frick’s masterpieces and dignified ambiance served as a much-needed escape from the noise and recklessness dominating public life. 3. In 2022, Kari Lake, a Trump sycophant, ran a race for Arizona governor, and Katie Hobbs, a thoughtful Democrat, beat her. Since that race, these women have moved in different directions, and what has followed is an interesting trajectory. Katie Hobbs continues to serve as governor and is running for re-election, while Kari Lake’s recent federal media agency appointment was ruled illegal, and she remains a controversial political figure after successive election losses and challenges. 4. Ellen Blum, a 37-year-old Brooklyn resident, has been quietly removing "love locks" and trash from the Brooklyn Bridge, embodying genuine civic responsibility in a city where many are apathetic nepo babies who would rather wait in a long line for Apollo Bagels. Her actions in cleaning up an important city landmark are in stark contrast to some of the newer residents who have flooded certain part of Manhattan and Brooklyn looking to take the best selfie for Instagram. 83: Trump’s Waterloo, Killer Algorithms, a Misfit Monkey & a Naughty Nurse

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 83rd episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics: 1. Last week, Trump and his national security team launched a full-scale attack on Iran in coordination with Israel. Trump and his sycophants are already crowing about the huge success of this operation, particularly since many top-level Iranian officials have been killed, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, there seems to be no clear endgame in mind here, and past US interventions in the Middle East have led to quagmires. Trump’s impulsive actions here are partly motivated by revenge and further highlight how unqualified he is to be President. 2. In the case of Jordan Wells v. Meta Platforms, Inc. and ByteDance Ltd., Kristen Wells is suing Meta and ByteDance after her son, Jordan Wells, died subway surfing in New York City. She alleges their platforms' algorithms promoted subway surfing content, contributing to his death. The lawsuit centers on the platforms' responsibility towards minors, free speech, and the "attractive nuisance" doctrine. In light of the issues involved in this case, it is possible it could end up in the U.S. Supreme Court. 3. Punch, a baby Japanese macaque born at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth and had to be hand-raised by zookeepers. To help him cope with isolation and anxiety, keepers gave him a stuffed IKEA orangutan plush toy, which Punch clung to for comfort and security. Over time, with the toy’s support and careful guidance from the zoo staff, Punch gradually began integrating with the other macaques, learning social behaviors and building confidence. His story, shared widely online, has resonated with many for its themes of resilience, emotional support, and overcoming loneliness. 4. The sad tale of Melissa Knutson, a nurse who heartily jumped into bed with her patient on multiple occasions, then accused the patient of assault. The fair Melissa eventually admitted to her fabrication, and is headed to the slammer. We hope she enjoys her time away. We hope you tune in, and please leave comments. 82: Stu’s Grand Return, Gold Coast Ghetto Living, a Demented Orangutan, & Snowballgate

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 82nd episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics: 1. Stu has returned from his time in Florida and recounts his time away and his harrowing return to New York due to incompetently run airlines and a poorly administered air transportation system which makes air travel in America a nightmare. 2. While Stu was away, David recounts how he has waged a transparency campaign in the dysfunctional building he has lived in way too long. He decided to broadly disclose the legal complaint and financials associated with his coop Board’s decision to spend double the budget installing an outdoor generator in the basement, which has ensnared the building in a never-ending lawsuit. Needless to say, his efforts weren’t greeted with kindness by Board members. 3. In Washington Square Park, there was a snowball fight where police officers were pelted with snowballs, and some of them were injured. In response to this attack on the NYPD, Mayor Mamdani waffled about prosecuting aggressive snowballers. This incident raises the question of whether NYPD Commissioner Tisch and Mamdani can continue to play together in the same sandbox. 4. Trump’s recent State of the Union address lasted 148 minutes and was filled with lies and undignified behavior, magnifying how far America has fallen from when President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address in two minutes, which provided moral clarity about the justification for the Civil War. On the other hand, Trump’s self-indulgence and delusional speech highlight how he is almost, if not more, demented than his predecessor, Joe Biden. We hope you tune in, and please leave comments. 81: Stu’s Nine Lives, Yes to the Dress & those Irksome Citi-Bikes

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 81st Episode of David & Stu Unhinged from an undisclosed location, we cover the following topics: 1) Stu recounts two near-death experiences, one of which was when Stu was given a shot by a doctor that he had a very bad reaction to, which derailed his plans to go to the racetrack, and he ended up back in the hospital, nearly unconscious, and the nurse could not feel his pulse. The second involved a serious car accident where a truck drove through a “Stop” sign into Stu’s vehicle, which also landed him in the hospital. 2) David’s daughter announced she was getting married next year in June, and preparations are underway for a low-key wedding. As part of this story, David recalls how he married at the City Hall in Chicago, so he doesn’t have vast experience planning a wedding. But, being that his daughter’s mother died when she was nine years old, David has often had to step in and fill the void his daughter must feel not having a mother at pivotal moments of her life, including when shopping for a wedding dress. 3) The Citi-Bike program was first implemented in 2013 by Mayor Bloomberg as a means to reduce congestion and help the environment. However, the program has been poorly administered, the bike rentals are expensive, and the kiosks are often malfunctioning. David recounts his experience with Citi-Bikes, including when riding one, and a cab ran over his foot and broke it on his way to an outdoor SoulCycle class during COVID. 80: Havana Exit, Epstein’s BFFs, Greek Tragedy, & Trump’s Alamo

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 80th episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics: 1. Michael Beck, a former National Security Agency (NSA) counterintelligence officer, died on January 25, 2026, at age 65. The exact cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, but Beck was the earliest known individual to report symptoms later linked to what the U.S. government and media call Havana Syndrome. Beck was also diagnosed with Parkinson's at age 45. We will discuss the mystery behind Havana Syndrome and speculate as to what caused Beck’s death. 2. On January 30, 2026, the Department of Justice released a plethora of documents from the Epstein files. This latest release further exposes the elites who congregated with Epstein, including some major figures in Trump’s universe, such as Howard Lutnik, and the parasite Elon Musk, even though both have steadfastly denied any involvement with the infamous sex trafficker. Even Trump himself has been implicated in this tawdry spectacle. 3. As a result of a hazing death at Northern Arizona University involving excessive drinking, three fraternity brothers of a Delta Tau Delta fraternity were arrested. Under Arizona law, this death could be treated as a felony. This incident has spurred calls for more laws directed at curbing hazing and emboldened those who have called for banning fraternities altogether. Stu feels that it is an overreaction, while David fully supports the elimination of these antiquated institutions from all college campuses. 4. Trump’s toxic brand is showing further signs of alienating Americans, including voters in deep red Texas, where a Democratic candidate, Taylor Rehmet, flipped a state senate seat that had been held by Republicans for 45 years in a special election. Instead of cementing his image on Mount Rushmore, Trump is heading towards lame duck status in a humiliating spectacle that demonstrates what a pathetic excuse of a president he is. Sooner or later, the Republicans might come to their senses and join the Democrats in impeaching his felonious ass. We hope you tune in, and please leave comments.
