    Lord Edmund Howard - The Forgotten Father of Queen Katheryn Howard

    Lord Edmund Howard has generally entered Tudor history through the more famous members of his family, but his own life, however, was considerably more interesting than this genealogical shorthand suggests. He was born into one of the most powerful aristocratic families in England, participated in some of the great events of Henry VIII’s early reign, distinguished himself at the Battle of Flodden and at the Field of Cloth of Gold, and eventually held Crown office at Calais. Yet he spent much of his adult life struggling with serious financial problems, and the contrast between his illustrious ancestry and his personal poverty had a profound effect upon his children. He has since slipped under the radar, so lets explore his story.

    When the story of the Tudor succession is told, attention naturally falls upon Henry VIII’s children, the tragedy of Lady Jane Grey, the disputed marriages of Katherine Grey and the eventual accession of James VI of Scotland. Yet between the death of Elizabeth I’s cousins and the arrival of the Stuart king, there stood another woman who possessed an extraordinarily strong claim to the English throne.     The Kings Secretary, William Paget, with Dr Andrew Johnston

    Among Henry VIII’s many significant ministers and members of his inner circle, William Paget is woefully overlooked. In many ways the successor to Thomas Cromwell, he was instrumental in defining the last years of King Henry VIII’s life, playing a fundamental role in the destruction of the Earl of Surrey and in establishing how Henrys planned succession would take shape. To discuss Paget with me, I am pleased to welcome historian Dr Andrew Johnston onto the podcast for the first time.     Among the many women connected to the Tudor court, Anne Brandon is an unusually compelling figure precisely because so little is known about her.     When Jane Seymour became queen consort of England in May 1536, she transformed the fortunes of her family almost overnight.
