⸻ A friend's mother, and her three daughters. Every year, the four of them go to Paris. The daughters are beautiful. Yet the one who draws the eyes there, they say, is the mother. ⸻ There are places in the world where youth is not the strongest thing. Japanese women love Paris, most of them. So they know. That some who have aged are more beautiful. ⸻ And still, they return to black. To the safe choice. ⸻ Why, I wondered, for a long time. ⸻ Jeans — we deliberately strip them, fade them, and call it value. Furniture, too. Yet when the same happens to a human face,we call it, at once, decline. ⸻ The same passing of time — yet we call them opposites. And, only humans are trying to return to being new.

⸻ Earlier, I wrote about a city dressed in black. I have been thinking, since. The people in black have not chosen it. They have simply become black — matching their mood, matching the crowd. And wearing dark colors, they sink a little more. Once, a leader I knew said: "When I'm not doing well, I wear bright suits. When I'm doing well, I choose quiet colors." She was not matching clothes to mood. She was moving mood with clothes. The difference between the black crowd and this one woman was not taste, not budget. It was whether they were matching the world, or choosing what came next. Small a thing as it is — the color of tomorrow's clothes may quietly move the day.
