Knock Knock Eye: What Could Possibly Unite America?

What if the only thing that could truly unite this country was our collective rage at health insurance companies? This week, I’m handing out my best social media survival advice (step one: don’t get fired), sharing the rare thrill of bringing vision back from the brink, and digging into why bloody tears are a real thing. Plus, we’ll talk colorblindness, cataracts, and maybe even which of your five senses deserves the top spot. Takeaways: Why your social media “private” posts might not be so private after all. The miraculous patient journey from hand-motion vision to 20/50 and why it made me tear up. How colorblindness sneaks through generations and why it seems to “skip.” The surprisingly spooky truth about crying blood. Why ophthalmology isn’t just eyeballs, it’s politics, insurance, and joy all rolled into one. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Glauc Talk: Chemotherapy Drugs 101: The Messiest Crash Course Ever

I’ve been to a lot of medical conferences, but veterinary medicine conferences are different. Picture me, a human ophthalmologist, standing in front of a thousand vets, showing them photos of my dog Milo’s eyes (because why not?). Turns out, they loved it and then immediately called me out for doing the exact thing they can’t stand about human doctors. Oops. Kristin and I also get into the strange overlap between vet medicine and human medicine (yes, the cardiologists still argue), why ER veterinarians might actually have the hardest job in medicine, and how I managed to accidentally do the very thing vets complain about most. And if that’s not enough, we dive headfirst into a Twitter firestorm about whether doctors should ever “Google it” in front of patients, plus a surprise crash course in chemotherapy drugs straight from my med school review book. Takeaways: Vet vs. Human Medicine – The personalities are eerily similar… but vets may have the tougher gig. The Milo Moment – How my dog’s eyesight became the star of my keynote. Human Doctor Problem – Why vets roll their eyes when we try to flex our “expertise” in their clinics. Googling in the Exam Room – The controversial tweet that sparked a million opinions. Chemotherapy 101 – A chaotic but oddly fascinating attempt to explain cancer drugs on the fly. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Knock Knock Eye: Sympathetic Ophthalmia: The Rare Eye Disease I Hope Never to See

What happens when your immune system suddenly decides your eye is the enemy? This week I’m diving into one of ophthalmology’s rarest (and frankly scariest) condition, sympathetic ophthalmia. Plus, I’m talking GLP-1 miracle drugs, why residency feels like a soul-draining black hole, and whether med school should really be shorter. And yes, we’re also testing which of your eyeballs is the boss. Takeaways: The strange and unsettling reality of sympathetic ophthalmia and why I hope never to see it in clinic. Why GLP-1 drugs come with both groundbreaking benefits and tricky questions about eye health. How residency manages to crush enthusiasm… and whether you can climb back out. The eternal debate: shorten med school or just lower the tuition? Eye dominance, cataract surgery, and why one of your eyeballs secretly calls the shots. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Glauc Talk: Could You Need Rabies Shots Without a Bite?

I’ve worn a lot of hats. Physician, patient, Domino’s delivery guy, even walk-in freezer napper. But in this episode, Kristin and I dive into a conversation that’s bigger (and scarier) than my teenage pizza-ball experiments: what happens if we cut health insurance out of healthcare altogether? We start with rabies bats in Wyoming (because of course we do), wander into my old nap habits, and then head straight into a serious discussion sparked by Dr. Elisabeth Potter about the state of private practice medicine. Is it time to rethink the way we pay for healthcare? Could direct patient-physician models actually work? And how much longer can small practices survive the insurance stranglehold? Takeaways: Insurance Reality Check – Who actually sets the prices for your care? Spoiler: not your doctor. The Potter Question – What happens if we cut the middleman and patients just pay doctors directly? Private Practice on the Brink – Why small practices are disappearing—and who’s really behind it. Rabies in the Tetons – Hundreds exposed, five painful shots, and a reminder that bats don’t always stay in caves. Domino’s Memories – From pizza-balls to road rage, the teenage jobs that taught me more about tipping than med school ever did. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Knock Knock Eye: Flashes, Floaters, and Tears...Oh My!

Ever wondered what happens when your eye jelly decides to collapse in on itself? Or why some cataract surgeons apparently get squeamish around LASIK patients (spoiler: they shouldn’t)? This episode takes you from pediatrician pep rallies to the surprisingly dark side of floaters and flashes. Along the way, I’ll rant a little, nerd out a lot, and maybe terrify you just enough to finally schedule that eye exam. Takeaways: What flashes of light really mean—and why they send ophthalmologists running for the laser. Why pediatricians stand out in Washington, and what the rest of us could learn from them. The surprising risk of pairing multifocal lenses with LASIK eyes (and why I say “no thanks”). The week I had a flood of retinal tears in clinic—and the lessons you need to know. Why stepping back from the noise of social media might just save your sanity (and your career). — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Glauc Talk: Can a BuzzFeed Quiz Accurately Define Our Medical Destiny?

This week, it’s just me and Kristin taking a BuzzFeed quiz to figure out what kind of doctor we are—and, well, the results raise some eyebrows. We also talk about a new bill being introduced in Massachusetts and answer a listener email about surgical etiquette: should you chat during procedures or keep it strictly scalpel business? Takeaways: Kristin and I take a BuzzFeed quiz that tells us what kind of doctor we are… and the results hit a little too hard. We break down a Massachusetts bill that's being voted on soon! A listener asks if it’s okay to talk during surgery—and we definitely have opinions. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Knock Knock Eye: Would You Trust a Doctor Trained in Less Time?

This week’s Knock Knock Eye is a little bit of everything: football, birthdays, med school reform, and one of the strangest kinds of patients I see in clinic. I talk about turning 40 (and yes, going full Chiefs fan at Arrowhead), why the fourth year of med school might be a “victory lap” worth keeping, and how Europe might actually be ahead of us when it comes to training doctors. Plus, I share what it was like speaking to med students about healthcare advocacy and why I think universal care will only happen through small, stepwise changes. And finally, we get clinical: how do you handle a patient who insists they can’t see a single photon of light, when your exam says otherwise? Spoiler: it’s not about calling them a faker. Takeaways: Why shortening med school to three years sounds efficient but could backfire for future physicians. How European six-year combined programs might be a smarter way forward. The advice I gave to bright-eyed med students about fighting for change without burning out. Why I think universal healthcare in the U.S. will only come from incremental reforms, not sweeping legislation. Inside the exam room: how ophthalmologists test for non-physiologic vision loss—and why reassurance beats accusation every time. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)!
