In The Now - Episode 4: Conflict in the Middle East

Recorded 6 March 2026 On 28 February 2026, the US and Israel struck Iran, killing its Supreme Leader and destroying much of its infrastructure. Iran retaliated with strikes to various states in the Middle East. This included tourist cities like Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai. The recent events adds to a region that has seen countless of conflicts in recent years. Join us, Anelka and Nico, together with our guest Earl (Year 2 Physics student and co-host of the Music show) as we take you through the developments of this conflict six days on. We delve into some background to the three states, US, Israel and Iran; as well as a quick look at Iran's political system and the implication of the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. After the break, we look at the wider implication of the US-Israel-Iran conflict, namely in the aviation market and the rising cost of oil (and fuel). How does a conflict thousands of kilometers away from Singapore affect us? And what steps must we take amidst an additional degree of uncertainty. We close off with reflections of Singapore's internal security arising from this conflict and what it takes to continue the safety we all love and enjoy. During the break, we take a break from the bleak nature of news as Earl introduces himself and what he looks forward to as the newest addition of Radio Pulze's Music podcast this semester. Also, he shares his music preferences and his song recommendation. Happy listening! Note: This conflict in the Middle East is an evolving one. What may pan out when this episode is published may paint a very different picture to the situation at the time of the recording.
