Seven years on that shore, and the sea finally changed its mind. Episode 2 leaves Telemachus behind in Sparta and returns to Odysseus himself — Calypso's island, a storm that tears his raft apart, and a princess on a beach who decides not to run. By the end of this one, Odysseus is telling his own story for the first time, in his own words, to a hall full of strangers. If a stranger's kindness has ever changed the course of your day, I'd love to hear about it in the comments. 0:00 Intro 3:09 Calypso Lets Him Go 15:22 Shipwrecked 28:10 The Girl on the Shore 46:54 The Phaeacian Court 57:11 The Feast and the Reveal 1:10:11 The Cicones and the Lotus-Eaters 1:18:41 Landfall at the Cyclopes' Shore 1:23:03 Sleep Sounds This is Episode 2 of a Dream With Jacob series adapting Homer's Odyssey as a bedtime sleep story, read from Samuel Butler's 1900 public-domain English translation (Roman god names swapped to their Greek originals — Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, Hermes). It's timed to the cultural wave around the 2026 Nolan film, but adapts only Homer's original text, never the film's script or scenes. Episode 2 covers Books V through IX (through the Lotus-Eaters): Calypso finally releasing Odysseus after seven years, the storm that wrecks his raft, his rescue by the Phaeacian princess Nausicaa, his welcome at her father's court, and the moment a bard's song breaks him down in front of the whole hall and he finally reveals who he is. The episode closes as he begins telling his own story — the raid on the Cicones, and the strange, gentle danger of the Lotus-Eaters — right up to the night before his ships land on the Cyclopes' shore. It's told gently, as a slow-moving narrative to rest inside rather than a guided meditation with direct instruction. What's covered in this episode: - The gods finally decide Odysseus's exile has gone on long enough, and Hermes is sent to tell Calypso to let him go — including her sharp, very human protest at the unfairness of it. - Odysseus's raft, and the storm Poseidon sends to wreck it, and two days adrift in the water before he finally reaches land, exhausted, and sleeps buried in a pile of leaves. - Nausicaa, a Phaeacian princess doing laundry by a river, who finds a naked, starving, shipwrecked stranger on the beach and doesn't run. - His welcome at the court of King Alcinous and Queen Arete, a feast, athletic games, and a bard's song about the Trojan War that makes him weep in front of the whole hall. - Odysseus finally revealing his own name and beginning to tell his own story — the raid on the Cicones, and the Lotus-Eaters, whose gentle hospitality nearly cost him half his crew. - The episode closes on the eve of a new landing, with Odysseus and his men camped just offshore from a mysterious island, not yet knowing what's waiting for them there.
