    Stellar Strings: Unraveling the Milky Way’s Hidden Threads

    The Milky Way is filled with enormous, elongated structures of stars stretching across hundreds of parsecs. Known as stellar strings, these formations look coherent in space—but are they truly families of stars born together, remnants of dissolving clusters, or simply unrelated stars gathered by Galactic dynamics? Using astrometry from Gaia DR3 and detailed chemical abundances from GALAH DR4, this study investigates 20 stellar strings through both their motion and chemical fingerprints. Eighteen show remarkable chemical homogeneity comparable to open clusters, providing strong evidence that many share a common origin. Yet the population is far from uniform: some appear to be dissolving clusters and tidal structures, others may preserve star formation along ancient gas filaments, while several are likely moving groups created by the Milky Way’s spiral arms or central bar. The results reveal stellar strings not as a single class of object, but as a diverse fossil record of how stars form, migrate, and gradually disperse across the Galactic disk.

    Feeling Quantum: When Physics Becomes Music

    Can we experience quantum physics before we understand it? During the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, two major public events in Japan and Germany explored a radically different approach to science communication: replacing explanation-first outreach with resonance-driven experiences. At the center was Fundamental Interactions, an immersive audiovisual concert translating electromagnetism, the strong and weak forces, gravity, and unification into music, 360-degree sound, and generative visuals. Drawing on Quantum Fest in Japan and Quantum100 in Germany, which together attracted more than 4,000 participants, the study examines how sensory immersion, collective embodiment, and emotional resonance can lower psychological barriers to highly abstract science. From audiences physically associating sound with wave-particle duality to a 150-member student “Quantum Chorus” embodying figures from the history of physics, the events suggest that science communication does not always have to begin with comprehension. The findings also reveal an important limitation: feeling physics is not the same as understanding physics. Immersion can spark curiosity, connection, and conversation, but conceptual understanding still requires additional bridges between artistic experience and scientific meaning. The result is a provocative new question for science communication: perhaps before asking people to understand quantum mechanics, we should first give them a reason to care about it.

    Moving Quantum Singularities: Point Interactions in Motion

    Point interactions are among the simplest-looking yet most singular perturbations in quantum mechanics. In one dimension they can often be handled directly, but in two and three dimensions the Green’s function diverges, forcing the theory to be renormalized.     Stealing a Star’s Spin: A New Way to Search for Alien Civilizations

    Most searches for extraterrestrial technology assume that an advanced civilization would harvest a star’s light and reveal itself through excess infrared waste heat. But what if the resource being extracted is not starlight at all? A recent study proposes a new technosignature called Stellar J-Harvesting, in which a civilization removes angular momentum from its host star and taps its rotational energy. Such activity could gradually slow the star’s rotation while producing relatively little waste heat, potentially allowing it to escape traditional infrared-based searches. The researchers developed a screening framework for FGK-type main-sequence stars observed by the Kepler mission, looking for stars rotating significantly more slowly than comparable members of their population. After accounting for natural explanations such as multiplicity and low metallicity, two unusually strong candidates remained, although both are currently considered more likely to result from measurement errors or unresolved binary companions.     Mechanical Fields: Non-Abelian Physics in Active Lattices

In two dimensions, the Wilson loop becomes sensitive to path direction; in one dimension, tuning the gauge potential can switch the non-Hermitian skin effect between opposite ends of the lattice. This points toward programmable mechanical metamaterials whose wave behavior can be actively controlled.
