LISTENING to Your Inner Voice for Inspiration

Rebecca Biber is a published and award-winning poet. Writers in all genres will appreciate Rebecca's insights into what inspires her, what themes she explores in her poems and how she develops ideas into finished poems. Rebecca's advice about how to feel at ease with reading your work out loud is: take up an instrument, because playing an instrument in public is so much more stressful than reading something you've written out loud. (And this is from a professional pianist!) Our Open Mic Night at the Badass Writers Cafe, features H.H. Rune, a writer and storyteller from the Pacific Northwest. Here's how she describes herself: "After turning thirty she experienced a transformative realization that she had allowed fear to shape much of her life. This awakening sparked in her a commitment to lead an extraordinary life within the space of an ordinary one." We revisited last episode's question of the week (Do you track your writing?) and explore next episode's question (Do you do things to set the mood for your writing?). And...the inspirational quote is by the late Elmore Leonard, a crime and western writer who's written more three dozen novels - many of which have been used as the source material for movies and TV series. Introducing Nischa Shah: #1 Financial Mistake People Make in Their 20s & 30s (Fix It With This Simple System) from On Purpose with Jay Shetty. Follow the show: On Purpose with Jay Shetty Today, Jay sits down with his dear friend Nischa Shah, a former investment banker and accountant who walked away from a high-status corporate career to help people rethink their relationship with money, success, and freedom. Nischa reflects on the “dark phase” she experienced while climbing the corporate ladder, realizing that the prestige and polish of banking had created a deep disconnect from her true self. Nischa invites listeners to confront a powerful question many of us avoid: “Would I still be happy if I were living the same life five or ten years from now?” Jay and Nischa shift into practical strategies for navigating money anxiety. Nischa introduces the “ostrich effect,” which is the psychological tendency to avoid looking at our finances out of fear. She shares her simple but powerful “three-bucket” approach to personal finance, where income is intentionally divided between fundamentals, fun, and the “future you.” By reframing the goal from financial success to financial happiness, Nischa offers a clearer, more intentional way to manage money, one that prioritizes peace of mind over status or external validation. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Assess Your Career Alignment  How to Calculate a Financial Cushion  How to Manage Income Using the Three-Bucket Method  How to Audit Spending with Three Key Questions  How to Turn Financial Knowledge into Action  How to Strategize Paying Off Debt vs. Investing  How to Increase Your Value and Earning Potential  It is never too late to begin reclaiming your narrative, whether that starts with building a small financial safety net for peace of mind or finally turning knowledge into decisive action. Collaborating on a Writing Project: Challenges and Rewards

What happens when two good friends – both experienced writers – decide to write a play together? Will their writing styles clash, or mesh? How do they navigate differences of opinion? How do they get beyond being nice to each other and start being honest with each other? Tony Targan and Dave Durham are Detroit-area creative multi-hyphenates (acting, directing, playwriting) who embarked on an adventure in writing that was new to both of them. Learn why they did it and what the outcome was in this lively and frank conversation. It may inspire you to reach out to a fellow writer for a collaborative project yourself! You will also hear some brave writer read from their work-in-progress for Open Mic Night at the Badass Writers Café – and you'll get a chance to critique it afterward. There will be a Question of the Week, answered by podcast listeners. This one's about money! Writing Nonfiction For Love and Money: A Published Author's Story

What does it feel like to get paid for doing something you love? Paul Vachon writes books about history, which he is passionate about. And – this is going to make many writers, including myself, jealous – publishers reach out to him, not vice versa. How did Paul get started? How does he take a topic and turn it into a full-length book? His books are based on actual people and events, so accuracy is a priority. How much research and fact-checking is involved? Has he ever disagreed with editors about a change they want made? This published author of many books tells us how he established his writing career and how it continues to grow. He gives tips on navigating publishing contracts, taking or finding photographs and trying to stay on track when issues in his personal life demand his time. That last challenge is true for so many of us. Whatever kind of writing you do, you'll get practical advice and inspiration from this conversation. There's also a table reserved for you at the Badass Writers' Café, for Open Mic Night. Hear a writer read from their work-in-progress and comment on it afterward, in the Write Like a Bad--- Facebook group. And finally, are your ideas dangerous? They should be, according to this episode's inspirational quote. Paul Vachon's website is: paulvachonwrites.com. His books are available on his website and on Amazon. Paul's books include Becoming the Motor City: A Timeline of Detroit's Auto Industry, Detroit: An Illustrated Timeline, Lost Restaurants of Detroit, Legendary Locals of Detroit, and Forgotten Detroit – and you don't have to be a Detroiter to enjoy them! As you could tell by our conversation, Paul brings history – and historical characters – to life, in a way that is both informative and entertaining. Mac McFarland, who told us what writing success would look like for him, has written All The Answers. It is the first book in his Agent of Change series. The second book, All The Information, is set to release soon, and the third book, All The Understanding, is still in the writing/development stages. There will be at least two more books in the series, both of which – Mac says - are well outlined. (He really plans ahead!) Writing that First Book: What Took You So Long?

You've wanted to write for a long time. You have an idea for a story or maybe a nonfiction book in your head, and it's been there for a while. Why haven't you acted on it? What's holding you back? Should you just forget about it? Forget about being a writer? Are you ever too old to start writing? These are serious questions, but my conversation with Shannon Groves is anything but serious! If Shannon brings a tenth of her hilarious, sparkling personality to that children's book she intends to write, it will be w. But is wonderful. But why is she just talking about writing? Will she actually get down to this long-simmering project? Shannon has something many writers of children's books do not have: a home-grown illustrator. Her daughter is an artist and will illustrate the book that Shannon promises she'll write. (She will come back on the podcast sometime in the future to give us an update on it.) If you've been on the fence about starting your writing journey, this episode is a must-listen for you! Veteran writers will enjoy being reminded of their starts. Although writing will be new to her, Shannon already expresses her creativity by acting, singing and sewing boho clothing for herself. She lives in Michigan with her husband and two young adult children. You can find Shannon on TikTok at shannontgroves.
