2378 - How 9/11 Shapes Politics Today w/ Richard Beck

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Richard Beck, senior writer at n + 1 Magazine, to discuss his recent book Homeland: The War on Terror in American Life. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s tariffs, Trump’s cabinet drama, Trump’s legal woes, Biden’s gift to Trump, deaths under Texas’ abortion ban, Missouri’s ban on trans care for minors, Charlotte’s airport workers’ strike, bird flu, and Mississippi’s runoff election, before diving a little deeper into Biden’s plan to expand Medicare and Medicaid to include weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Trump’s tariff plan, and problems in the Trump cabinet. Richard Beck then joins, jumping right into his particular perspective for the war on terror as a teenager at the time of 9/11, unpacking the bipartisan normalization of the shift to a domestic surveillance state backing a globalized project of enforced American hegemony, and looking at how the Democratic Party (under Obama), in particular, worked to simultaneously present the Bush administration as an aberration, while bureaucratizing, rationalizing, and, ultimately, reinforcing the exact project that was supposedly so absurd. After briefly touching on the window Occupy provided to the Obama administration’s blatant rejection of a progressive movement outside of the political establishment, Beck steps back, diving into the overwhelming media backlash to any sort of critical lens on US hegemony, with a direct line between the “owning the libs” politics of today and the Limbaughian obsession with making fun of the progressive identifiers of the nineties and aughts, alongside a direct tie-in to the bipartisan militarization of American society, be it tanks in police departments, an influx of Humvees on the street, or the catapulting of “SpecOps”-esque comic movies to the forefront of US culture, and how those elements worked to further legitimize the amoral (and often actively immoral) maintenance of US hegemony across the globe. Wrapping up, Richard, Sam, and Emma briefly touch on the particular role of oil in the War on Terror, and why it fails to actually explain the quest for American hegemony in an age of dwindling capitalist expansion, tackling the major role of the US plays well outside of petroleum reserves in an effort, more than anything else, to simply protect its impunity at the top of the global liberal order. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma touch on future coverage of the Longshoremen’s strike, before diving into the continuing death and devastation coming from Texas’ abortion ban, and reflecting on Tim Pool’s desire to make every victim of rape a subject of public criticism if they want an abortion. They also tackle some backlash to Trump naming a pro-vaccination doctor to the position of Surgeon General, plus, you IMs! 2377 - Bolsonaro Indicted In Brazil; Crypto In The Trump Admin w/ Mike Elk; Jacob Silverman

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Mike Elk, founder of the Payday Report, to discuss the recent news out of Brazil that former President Bolsonaro has been indicted. Then, they speak with Jacob Silverman, co-author of his latest book Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, and writer at the AM Quickie newsletter, to discuss Trump's nomination of Howard Lutnick to be Commerce Secretary, and his associations with crypto. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s destruction of Lebanon, Israel’s sanctioning of Haaretz, the Biden-Trump transition, Trump’s developing cabinet, Trump’s attacks on trans people, and Trump’s plan of attack on Jack Smith, before diving a little deeper into the growing tension between the US-Israel alliance and the international order upholding the ICC’s warrant for the arrest of Netanyahu. Mike Elk then joins, diving right into the major developments in Brazil’s criminal case over the far-right (and Bolsonaro-administration-) backed coup and recently-revealed assassination in the wake of Lula da Silva’s reelection in 2022, with the indicting of a massive portion of Bolsonaro’s military advisors occurring last week in the leadup to the indictment of Bolsonaro himself this week, all at the hands of the Brazilian Supreme Court. Elk then walks Sam and Emma through the development of the investigation, with incredibly poor criminal operations UNRELATED to the coup allowing the Court to easily swing snitches over to their side, before stepping back to unpack the evolution of the fascist attacks on Lula and the Brazilian left, from the corrupt imprisonment of Lula and his successor, through the backlash to said political imprisonment, and into Bolsonaro’s coup attempt in 2023. Mike expands on Bolsonaro’s clear connection to the 2018 assassination of Rio de Janeiro city council member Marielle Franco, before wrapping up by noting the stunning impact this entire affair (and, more importantly, the Court's willingness to act on it) has had on completely decapitating the threat of the Brazilian far-right. Jacob Silverman then walks Sam and Emma through the major influx in crypto spending in the 2024 election cycle, despite the industry’s recent stutters, and touches on the potential issue of an industry dominated by criminal conspiracy and transactions shaping US politics, before zeroing in on the particular role of one Tether, perhaps the largest cryptocurrency on the international level and a central investment of incoming Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. After expanding on the incredibly shady, and fully not evidence-backed dealings of Tether, Jacob wraps up by unpacking the ultimate goal of the crypto industry in completely liberating the movement of money, freeing it from the shackles of absurd concepts like “fraud” and government regulations, and the role the Trump administration can play in making this goal a reality. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Milo Yiannopoulos talk gay sex, not having sex, Laura Loomer, straight sex, abstinence, and definitely not being gay with Tim Pool, before chatting with Guy from Massachusetts and Carrie from New York about certain similarities between Milo and one Nick Fuentes. BRB Forever presses Sam and Emma on the language around Israel’s genocide in Gaza, Walt from Wyoming unpacks Progressives’ major wins in Wisconsin, and Jordan Peterson teases out the conservative ideology behind the notoriously anti-fascist Lord of the Rings, plus, your calls and IMs! 2376 - What Does A Competent Trump Admin Look Like? w/ Heather Digby Parton

It’s Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the indefinite cancellation of Trump’s hush money sentencing, Trump’s cabinet of rapists and fraudsters, the MTG-Musk-Ramaswamy connection, the House’s passage of the non-profit killer bill, Schumer’s weak politics, the divide between US-Israel and the rest of the international order over the ICC’s charges, Bolsonaro’s criminal charges, and UAW action in Kentucky, before parsing a little deeper through the vastly different responses to the ICC’s charges against Netanyahu, Gallant, and others, with an adamant defense of genocide from the Biden administration rebuked both internationally and domestically. Digby then joins, as she, Sam, and Emma first reflect on their gut reactions to Trump’s second presidential victory, the distinctions between their responses to 2016 and 2024, and the particular feeling of defeat for the feminist movement as an anti-abortion candidate begins to name his overwhelmingly predatory cabinet. Shifting more toward the policy impact of a second Trump term, Digby dives into the major threat of a “competent” Trump administration, backed by four years of drafting the blueprint for Project 2025, and what to make of growing tensions between Trump and the Senate, be it over leadership or cabinet appointments, expanding on that latter element by assessing the major (and controversial) roles to be played by potential cabinet members Pete Hegseth and Russ Vought. The three of them also touch on the major backing Trump has in the financial power of Elon Musk, and the evolution of the GOP’s clamor for power, before Sam and Emma wrap up the free half with some ancient (as in a mere 8 years ago) comments from RFK about one Donald Trump. And in the Fun Half: Emma dives deep into the impressive progressive representation coming out of Georgia, from the Senate to local politics, with some help from DSA Aaron from Atlanta, before briefly touching on the evolution of the Biden-Netanyahu relationship and what the future of a Trump-Netanyahu alliance will mean for the fight for a free Palestine. The MR Team also highlights Stavros Halkias' strong appearance with Theo Von, talks with Jake the Teacher about New York’s conservative shift and the future of the governor’s race, and unpacks the rampant bigotry of Nancy Mace and the right’s desire to put queer people back in the closet, plus, your calls and IMs! 2375 - Tulsi Gabbard’s Sketchy Past; GOP’s Anti-Trans Bathroom Panic w/ Mike Prysner, Erin Reed

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Mike Prysner of the Empire Files to discuss Tulsi Gabbard's nomination to be U.S. Director of National Intelligence. Then, she speaks with journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss Rep. Nancy Mace's recent decision to introduce legislation to bar Rep. Sarah McBride, the only trans legislator in the upcoming Congress, from using the Capitol Hill bathrooms. First, Emma runs through updates on the ICC’s issuing of arrest warrants for the leaders behind Israel’s genocide of Palestinians, Israel’s new one-sided ceasefire pitch for Lebanon, the failure of Bernie’s Israel resolution in the Senate, the passage of the anti-non-profit bill in the House, US military aid to Ukraine, the Gaetz ethics report, Pete Hegseth’s history of sexual assault allegations, and Linda McMahon’s history of hiring people with sexual assault allegations, before watching a little more from the UN as they finally begin to hold Israel to account for their ethnic cleansing of Gaza. Mike Prysner then joins, diving right into Trump’s pick of one Tulsi Gabbard for his Director of National Intelligence, and the oddly underwhelming critique of her in the face of myriad problematic potential appointments, tackling how most of the mainstream criticisms of her focus on her odd foreign policy beliefs (support for dictators, Edward Snowden), leaving her deep ties to a deeply ideological religious organization untouched. Expanding on this latter element, Prysner parses through the history and evolution of the Science of Identity Foundation, a religious organization (or ‘cult’ to some ex-members) founded by former Hare Krishna member Chris Butler, who – claiming to be THE messenger from God – established and grew this community around himself, with explicit, long-term plans to establish and grow their role in American politics, first taking root in Hawaii with the rise of Gabbard’s parents, before she, having been groomed for the role from a young age, became the first elected to Congress. Going even deeper, Mike walks Emma through the central ideological beliefs of the organization, and how they fundamentally shape their education around islamophobia and homophobia, with a near-constant exposure to rampantly and explicitly anti-muslim and anti-LGBTQ sermons from Butler himself, ingraining these beliefs in children, before they step back to examine the community’s history of intimidation and harassment of ex-members and critics. Wrapping up, Prysner unpacks Tulsi’s role as a political chameleon, from her odd foreign policy takes to her Bernie-to-leaving-the-left pipeline, as a reflection of the organization's deep desire to climb the rungs of power – something expressed during her time in the military as well – and paints a picture of the role the Gabbard family play within the Science of Identity Foundation as a whole. And in the Fun Half, Emma, Matt Binder, Brandon Sutton, and the MR Crew react to the breaking news that former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination to be Trump's incoming Attorney General, and how some new exclusive CNN reporting on his conduct may have contributed to his withdrawal. The crew also strolls down memory lane to remember when Gaetz defended his relationship with his (completely real) adopted son, Nestor. They then look into the grisly allegations outlined in a 2017 police report regarding sexual assault investigation into Trump's Defense Secretary pick, Pete Hegseth. After, they check in on Emma's spicy appearance on "Piers Morgan Uncensored", where Emma made Piers visibly uncomfortable because a woman wouldn't listen to him telling her to be quiet. 2374 - Foreign Policy & The Future Of Public Health Under Trump w/ Matt Duss, Gregg Gonsalves

It’s Hump Day! Sam speaks with Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, to discuss what may to be come in terms of foreign policy in Trump's 2nd term. Then, he speaks with Gregg Gonsalves, associate professor of epidemiology at Yale University, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "The Future of Public Health—or Lack Thereof—Under Trump."  First, Sam runs through updates on escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, US support for Israel’s genocide, the growing impact of climate change, Trump’s newest cabinet names, Nancy Mace’s TERF pivot, the Senate’s judicial confirmations, and the Stop Terror Financing Act, also briefly expanding on Trump’s cabinet appointments and the absurd lengths he will go to push them through confirmation. Matt Duss then joins, as first tackles the US’ recent vetoing of a 14-1 (the US being the 1) vote in the UN Security Council for an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, unpacking the facade of Biden’s supposed goal of a ceasefire – something contradicted by every action and inaction regarding Israel – and the deeply personal ideological roots of his support for the Zionist project. After expanding on the impact of Israel’s genocide on evolving tensions in the Middle East and the changing role of US Hegemony, Duss and Sam look east as they unpack the US pivot to the Pacific and what a second Trump regime would mean for growing tensions with China, wrapping up by diving into the signals sent by Trump’s exceedingly neo-con cabinet, and why the ultimate factor might just be his ego. Professor Gregg Gonsalves joins, briefly reflecting on broader reactions to Trump’s developing public health regime led by Dr. Oz and RFK Jr., before diving deeper into some of the problems with the wider goals of an RFK-led public health project, including his misinformation around fluoridation and the US government’s balanced and hyper-vigilant approach to its presence in tap water. He and Sam wrap up the interview by unpacking the relationship between public health and wide-spread vaccinations, the concept of “risk” when it comes to vaccines, on both a personal and community level, and the limited threat of a Bird Flu outbreak. And in the Fun Half: Sam dives deep into an election post-mortem with Mike from PA, and the long-term failures of the Democratic Party, before watching Bernie’s call for the US to *actually* follow their own laws when it comes to arming Israel, and Oklahoma’s Superintendent sends out a message of prayer to all his state’s students. Alt-right freaks freak over male birth control, Marjorie Taylor Greene issues an empty (tho entertaining) threat over the Gaetz report, and Retro Robot explores the idea of (and problem with) post-inauguration protests. 2373 - News Day Tuesday! Letter Carriers Fight For Fair Pay w/ Tyler Vasseur

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Tyler Vasseur, shop steward with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 9, to discuss the tentative agreement being negotiated between the NALC and the United States Postal Service (USPS). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine’s use of US-made missiles in Russia, the Gaetz report, Trump’s cabinet of predators, the DNC, House and Senate politics, US arms to Israel, genocide in Gaza, Musk/Bezos v. NLRB, and the Stop Terror Financing Bill, before watching Senator George Helmy’s emotional plea to the UN. Tyler Vasseur then joins, first outlining the breadth of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) representation, before walking through the evolution of their ongoing fight for a fair contract, beginning with the expiration of their previous contract on May 20th, 2023 – touching on the major shortcomings of this contract’s Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic and rampant inflation – and through over five hundred days of closed-door negotiations with Union Leadership, only for said leadership to announcement a new contract with a wage increase of a meager 1.3%. After diving deeper into the numbers behind this raise, Vasseur parses through the reaction of NALC members to this supposed “victory,” particularly as an anti-union Trump presidency threatens future victories, and how the rank-and-file is organizing to keep the fight for a fair contract going. He, Sam, and Emma also touch on the distinct fight NALC faces working with USPS, and the major problem of making workers, not management, responsible for keeping profits in line, before wrapping up the show by tackling what we can do to help this labor effort from the outside. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma look at the meaningful personal growth shown by folks like Markwayne Mullin and Joe Scarborough over the past year, going from openly denouncing fascists like Matt Gaetz and Donald Trump, respectively, to happily celebrating the future of their relationship to said fascists, before diving deep into the ongoing DNC implosion and what the future of the Party is likely to entail. They also give some updates on Rudy Giuliani’s legal woes, talk with Joshua from CT about RFK’s insane MAHA agenda and with A-Squared about progressive turnout, and tackle the importance of labeling fascists “fascist,” and Nazis “nazi,” plus, your calls and IMs! 2372 - What Will Education Look Like Under Trump? w/ Josh Cowen

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Josh Cowen, professor of education policy at Michigan State University, to discuss his recent book The Privateers: How Billionaires Created a Culture War and Sold School Vouchers. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s agenda of military-backed mass deportations, the Gaetz report, Trump’s cabinet confirmations, the GOP’s bill to kill nonprofits, labor action among Michigan nurses, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, starvation and genocide in Gaza, and Rudy Giuliani’s financial woes, also watching Morning Joe and Mika Brzezinski fast-track their capitulation to the Trump regime. Professor Josh Cowen then joins, diving right into the concept of school choice and the purpose of the voucher system, outlining how vouchers seek to make public dollars for education available for private tuition, supposedly to allow parents their choice of educational pathway for their child, before tackling exactly why this system fails to meet that goal, with private schools’ vastly increased ability to discriminate against students (via admissions or otherwise) meaning it becomes more “school’s choice” than “parent’s choice,” while the flood of money into private education markets under voucher systems, alongside the lack of transparency required for these private institutions, spurs the development of “subprime” providers who take this money in return for a significantly worse education that our public schools. Expanding on this, Josh walks Sam through the evolution of this parental rights’/school choice movement, beginning with the perfect storm of Milton Freedman’s desire to completely undermine the public school system in the US and the anti-segregationist backlash to Brown v. the Board of Education, and continuing through the growing prevalence of Christian Nationalist attacks on public education that we see today, exploring how reactionary forces bolster the drive to kill public education. After touching on the major financial impact the voucher program has had on public education, with a negative impact on its return end, Cowen wraps up by looking to the future of government-run-and-funded education under a Trump presidency, including the likelihood that he will actually dismantle the Department of Education, and why, despite the GOP’s electoral success, the voucher agenda has seen overwhelming backlash from voters. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack Trump’s potential attack on social security before diving deep into RFK’s ongoing acquiescence to the Trump regime to the point of… publicly ingesting seed oils?!?! They also touch on the developing capitulation of the Senate to let Trump bypass them with his cabinet appointments and parse through the direct relationship between news consumption and support for Harris as they unpack the utter messaging and campaign failures by the Democratic Party, with a highlight on the misleading interests of the consultant class on the Biden/Harris campaign agendas. They also watch Rep. Jayapal nail the election post-mortem, and have some fun reflecting on the evolution of one Jackson Hinkle with a caller, plus, your calls and IMs! 2371 - Elite Hubris, Harris' Loss, & Lessons For The Future w/ Astead Herndon

It's Casual Friday! Sam speaks with Astead Herndon, national politics reporter at the New York Times and host of "The Run-Up" podcast, to break down a crazy first week post-election.  First, Sam runs through updates on the developing picture of Trump’s cabinet, the Stop Terror Financing Act, and CFPB and NLRB action, also touching on establishment responses to RFK’s nomination as HHS secretary and his dangerous take on vaccines. Astead Herndon then joins, diving right into the prevalent narrative of two deeply unpopular nominees that dominated the 2024 US presidential election, and why, in refusing to acknowledge their sides’ unpopularity (specifically when it came to the Biden Administration), Democrats and Harris completely failed to address the question of change in the eyes of the voters. Expanding on this, Herndon walks through the evolution of this overwhelming backlash to the Biden Administration, in particular, with his shocking decision to run for reelection in the wake of the 2022 midterms, committing the party to a vision of status-quo that voters had (visibly) been growing less and less content with, and gutting any opportunity – via primary or otherwise – to present or shape a new vision for what Democrats, and the Democratic nominee, were fighting for. After diving a little deeper into his research on the undecided, swing state voters that decided this election and making clear the obvious paths Democrats had to win them over, Astead and Sam explore another level of failed messaging on the part of the Democratic party, with rhetoric seeking to separate Trump from his GOP colleagues alongside ceding ground on the issues of crime and immigration allowed Trump to untether himself from the critiques of the former while claiming victory over the latter. Wrapping up, they tackle the particular arrogance that pushed the Democratic Party to ignore the myriad, obvious signs that a Biden-associated candidacy would be a non-starter for voters, and why they need to go back to the table and work on actually addressing voters’ concerns. And in the Fun Half: Sam dives a little deeper into some potential impacts of an RFK-led world of public health, watches Donald Trump grapple with the other-worldly annoyance that is Elon Musk, and listens to GOP Senators explain why Matt Gaetz just deserves a chance. Vivek Ramaswamy – unelected bureaucrat – rails against unelected bureaucrats, Mike Huckabee waxes about his commitment to Israel, and the MR Team discusses an already-beginning inversion of US public opinion by party.
