SUBSCRIBER EXCLUSIVE: At Dateline LIVE, our in-person event held in September at The Pinnacle in Nashville, Josh Mankiewicz and Blayne Alexander spoke with investigators Nash Gurule and Eric Barnes, who were featured in the Dateline episodes “Deadly Connection” and “Losing Faith” respectively. “Deadly Connection” is about the investigation into the disappearance and murder of 19-year-old Kenia Mongue in Colorado. After Kenia vanished, Nash Gurule, then a detective with the Denver Police Department, spent months piecing together the case, ultimately using careful interrogation and persistence to secure a confession from Travis Forbes, who later led authorities to Kenia’s remains. “Losing Faith” is about the killing of Jamie Faith in Dallas, initially believed to be a random attack. Dallas Police Detective Eric Barnes was part of the team that determined Jamie’s wife, Jennifer, had convinced her former boyfriend to carry out the murder in a plot built on fabricated claims of abuse. Recorded in front of a live audience, the conversation revisits both investigations as Gurule and Barnes reflect on the determination and strategy that ultimately helped bring justice to the victims’ families. With Blayne on assignment, Lester Holt talks with Senior Producer Allison Orr and Producer Ann Preisman about Blayne’s latest episode, Malice. Just over a year into his new marriage, Jake Embert was found dead from what would quickly be ruled a self-inflicted gunshot. Jake’s family did not accept the ruling, believing he had been killed by his new wife. They hired a private investigator who presented his findings to authorities, resulting in Jake’s manner of death being changed to homicide. Susan Embert was charged with her husband’s murder and eventually found guilty and sentenced to life. Allison and Ann discuss the credentials needed to become a coroner and play an extra clip of Blayne confronting Susan about a Facebook post she made in the days following her husband’s death.
