Hij publiceert regelmatig essays in o.a. NRC.

Was Freud Right All Along? With Damiaan Denys and Mark Solms

Might psychoanalysis, so often dismissed as speculative or outdated, still offer one of the most profound ways of understanding mental suffering? What happens when Freud meets modern neuroscience? Can the unconscious be studied through the brain? Who still lies on the couch? Once, psychoanalysis was a widely recognized and popular form of therapy. But this pioneering therapy developed by Sigmund Freud at the end of the nineteenth century, is now often regarded with suspicion by modern science, or even considered outdated: unproven, inefficient, and expensive. More solution-focused forms of treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and medication, have displaced the talking sessions of psychoanalysis. But did we perhaps dismiss psychoanalysis too quickly? According to South African neuropsychologist Mark Solms, the answer is yes. More than any other form of therapy, psychoanalysis approaches human experience as something greater than brain activity alone, and mental well-being as more than merely the chemistry of the brain that can be altered with a pill. At the same time, evidence from neuropsychology itself suggests that psychoanalysis can have positive and lasting effects, Solms argues in his new book, The Only Cure. Psychiatrist Damian Denys will engage in conversation with Solms: was Freud right all along? Mark Solms is an globally acclaimed psychoanalyst and neuropsychologist, known for the integration of contemporary neuroscience with psychoanalytic methods and theories, and for his discovery of the forebrain mechanisms of dreaming. He is the Director of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, the Science Director of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the Co-Chair of the International Neuropsychoanalysis Society. Damiaan Denys is professor of psychiatry at the University of Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC. His work brings together clinical psychiatry, philosophy and neuroscience. Denys pioneered the development and resarch of deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disorders. As a psychiatrist, philosopher and psychotherapist, he is known for exploring mental suffering not only as a clinical phenomenon, but also as an existential, cultural and philosophical question. He currently leads the Lemon Tree center, an interdicisplinary center for psychiatry, philosophy and psychotherapy at the UVA. How Wars End with Olaf Koens, Iva Vukušić and Ihab Saloul

How does a society move forward after atrocity? After war? Genocide? Now that president Trump has established a ‘Board of Peace,’ in which reconstruction appears to be approached primarily as a real-estate deal, we examine the politics of peace. Linda Kinstler (journalist for The Economist and a scholar at Harvard University) argues that in peace building, there should be space for ‘oblivion’, a collective process of forgiveness and forgetting. A process of pardoning. Not to let people off the hook, but rather to acknowledge their guilt in a meaningful way. Because: ‘a pardon confirms the crime.’ How have acts of oblivion helped humankind move on since Roman times? What, for instance, was ‘forgotten’ in post-Nazi Germany? Is oblivion still possible in a digital age in which everything is documented? And how is oblivion different from simply ignoring the past and start building a ‘riviera of the Middle East’, as Trump is intending? Speakers: Author, reporter and former Russia correspondent Olaf Koens, Assistant professor in International History at Utrecht University Iva Vukušić and Co-Founder and Research Director of the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture AHM Ihab Saloul.

Black Box Iran with Nilo Tabrizy, Mina Etemad and Beri Shalmashi

How do you report on a closed dictatorship with an oppressed yet defiant population? Journalist Nilo Tabrizy is an open-source investigative reporter who covers Iran. For Western media, it is almost impossible to provide an accurate picture of what is happening in Iran. One of the most reliable methods to do so is through open-source reporting, which uses publicly available data to reconstruct events and verify facts. Nilo Tabrizy previously did this work for The New York Times and The Washington Post. Among other investigations, she reported on the missile strike on an Iranian girls’ school at the start of the war, in which about 165 students were killed. She recently received an Emmy for a documentary in collaboration with Bellingcat investigating the impact of the air strikes on the Iranian nuclear programme. How do you conduct data-driven investigations in a country notorious for internet blackouts? Earlier, Tabrizy covered the Woman, Life, Freedom movement demonstrations that erupted in Iran in 2022 after the death of Mahsa Jîna Amini. About these events, Tabrizy co-wrote the book For the Sun After Long Nights with Fatemeh Jamalpour, who is an Iranian feminist journalist, author, and former newspaper reporter. She is known for her reporting on women’s rights, human rights, and social issues in Iran. She previously worked for the reformist Iranian newspaper Shargh and later contributed to international outlets including BBC World News, The Sunday Times, The Paris Review, and Los Angeles Times. The Dutch translation of their book, Zusters in Iran (Zwartjes & Labovic), was recently published. In conversation with Tabrizy and Jamalpour, we discuss the ongoing war in Iran, the recent round of protests in the country and what it means to report on a country that both journalists fled.
