The life of an academic in gastroenterology, with Prof. Alexander Ford: Pt 1

With more than 500 published papers and over 40,000 citations, Prof. Alexander Ford is a notable name in gastroenterology academia. He is a professor of gastroenterology at University of Leeds, honorary consultant gastroenterologist at St. James's University Hospital, Leeds, UK, and the deputy editor of Gut. He joins FG editor Dr. Philip Smith and deputy editor Dr. Aditi Kumar to reflect on his career and the learnings he's taken from it. This is the first part in a mini-series of three parts. Three Critical Months for Patients with Decompensated Alcohol Related Cirrhosis

Deaths from alcohol-related liver disease tragically continue to increase in the United Kingdom. Liver transplant remains a curative option but only to a select cohort, requiring a minimum period of 3 months of abstinence. The group of those who have the highest morbidity and mortality are those admitted due to decompensation and alcohol-related hepatitis, and therefore the first three months post-discharge is critical. In this podcast, together with an expert panel, we explore the East Anglian perspective, addressing variations in access to alcohol care teams, approaches to maintain abstinence, post-discharge follow up and which patients to refer for transplantation. Decompensated cirrhosis: an update of the BSG/BASL admission care bundle

Historically patients with alcohol-related liver disease have received poor quality of care during their admission. In 2014, a guidance bundle was released by the the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL) to address this issue. This toolkit has recently received an update to incorporate recent advances in care and improve its usability as well as accessibility. A panel of guests join the podcast to discuss the perils of "bundle fatigue", the importance of buy-in for implementing guidance, and QI strategies for bringing the updated bundle successfully to your practice. Dr Oliver Tavabie, Deputy Editor at FG and Hepatology Consultant at the Leeds Liver Unit along with Dr Kohilan Gananandan, Trainee Editor at FG and Hepatology Registrar Royal London Hospital, interview Professor Stuart McPherson and Drs Lynsey Corless and Giovanna McGinty. Professor Stuart McPherson is based at the Liver Unit at Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust and is the deputy VP for Hepatology at the BSG. Dr Lynsey Corless is a Consultant Hepatologist at Hull Royal Infirmary and the NIHR Research Delivery Network National Specialty and Settings Lead for Hepatology.
