Gautama Buddha

Gautama Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, Shakyamuni Buddha, or simply the Buddha, was a spiritual leader and founder of Buddhism who lived and taught in the northeastern Indian subcontinent sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE. He is universally recognized by Buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end suffering (dukkha) through the eradication of ignorance (avidyā), craving (taṇhā), and rebirth. The Buddha was born into the royal family of the Shakya clan in Lumbini, which is now part of Nepal. His early name Siddhartha means "he who achieves his aim". Disturbed by the suffering he saw around him, he renounced his princely status at the age of 29 and embarked on a quest for spiritual understanding. After years of extreme ascetic practices, which proved to be fruitless, he opted for a middle path between asceticism and hedonism. Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India. He realized the Four Noble Truths, which form the basis of Buddhism: the truth of suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path leading to the cessation of suffering—known as the Noble Eightfold Path. His teachings emphasize ethics, insight, and meditation, focusing on the Three Marks of Existence: impermanence (anicca), suffering (dukkha), and the non-self (anattā). For the remaining 45 years of his life, the Buddha traveled in the Gangetic Plain, teaching his doctrine and discipline to a diverse range of people—from nobles to outcasts, men and women. He established a monastic community (Sangha) which has preserved his teachings, known as the Dharma, through centuries. The Buddha’s teachings were initially transmitted orally, and were later compiled by his followers in texts known as the Tripitaka or Pali Canon. His profound insights continue to influence millions of people around the world, making him one of the most significant and impactful figures in human history.
