Is Being Good at Fitting In Stopping Me From Knowing Myself?

Are you a social chameleon? Do you shift personalities so easily that your friends could never fit in the same room? And have you started to wonder if being this adaptable is keeping you from knowing who you really are?As a psychologist and a third culture kid, I used to ask myself the same thing. In this video I share what I’ve come to believe: being good at fitting in doesn’t take you away from yourself. It gives you the long way home. 🏡In this video:✨ Why I was jealous of people with “no social cues”✨ Third culture kids, adaptability, and the “is this my trauma response?” question✨ What Jungian psychology says about personas (social masks)✨ Why adapting is an act of building who you are✨ The difference between adapting and pretending, and why pretending hurts self-esteem✨ How to manifest within the bounds of your authenticity—🎭 JOIN THE WOMEN’S GROUP - "THE UNSCRIPTED WOMEN"I'm starting an online women's group where we explore the unconscious through monologues, improvisation, and performance. Not to become better actors, but to discover parts of ourselves we haven't met yet.Details: https://drjoo.org/womens-group—⏱ CHAPTERS0:00 Are you a social chameleon?0:50 Jealous of people with no social cues1:46 Growing up a third culture kid: adapting as survival2:44 Is it a trauma response?

We Built “Successful” Clinical Careers… But Our Childhood Dreams Never Left Us

What if you built the career you were supposed to want… and your childhood dream still refused to leave you alone?Yuli became a dermatology PA. I became a clinical psychologist. On paper, we both did the “right” thing: graduate school, licenses, stable careers, meaningful work. And yet, almost a decade into knowing each other, we somehow ended up lying on the floor of a tiny Japanese hotel talking about the lives we are finally allowing ourselves to dream of.For Yuli, it’s painting, storytelling, and becoming an artist. For me, it’s acting, writing, creating—and following a life that doesn’t always make sense on paper.Neither of us hates our clinical careers. That’s what makes this harder. We technically have everything we wished for, so why do we want more? We talk about growing up in Asian immigrant families, choosing practical careers, allowing yourself to invest in your creative pursuits for the first time, and the strange grief of realizing you may have spent years treating your deepest desires like hobbies.Maybe representation isn’t just seeing someone who looks like you succeed. It’s seeing someone you love take their inner voice seriously enough that you finally start believing yours too.🌑 Welcome to Her Cringe Clinic — where we stare into our shadows and learn to accept what we find with love✨📌 TIMESTAMPS / CHAPTERS00:00 – 10 Years in Medicine: The Promise I Made Myself01:17 – "I’m Running Out of Time"01:45 – Would You Quit Your Job if You Could?02:38 – Sunk Cost Fallacy vs. Genuinely Loving Your Profession04:15 – Immigrant Parents & The "Starving Artist" Myth05:12 – Representation Matters & Realizing a Path Exists06:01 – Put Me In, Coachhh!!07:03 – I Can't Pursue "Success" in Art07:35 – Having a Clinical 9 to 508:39 – Live a Life Worth Telling First09:59 – Does the Universe Want You to Be an Artist?11:18 – Healing at the Crossroads of Life12:02 – Honor the Voice that Keeps Coming Back & Invest in Yourself13:55 – It's OK to be a Delulu Nomad Chasing Nothing~🖤 Hosted by Dr. Seohyun Joo

Why I Quit Pre-Med to Write a Queer Novel About Korean Churches

What happens when the "safe" path isn't the right path? David spent years as a pre-med, working in neuroscience labs, and preparing for a Clinical Psychology PhD. Raised in conservative evangelical Korean-American churches, he was taught that his career had to be about self-sacrifice and helping others. But deep down, he was harboring a different passion that felt like a curse—creative writing. In this episode of Her Cringe Clinic, Dr. Joo sits down with David to talk about walking away from prestigious academic programs to write a 100-year historical epic following queer and trans Korean-Americans across church history. They dive deep into overcoming people-pleasing, societal expectations, breaking free from evangelical guilt, and why choosing to live your own life with creative pursuits might feel selfish. 📌 IN THIS EPISODE: 00:00 - Intro & Meeting David 00:58 - A 100-Year Novel on Queer Korean Church History 02:30 - The Psychology Behind Character Backstories 05:30 - Why David Walked Away From Pre-Med & Psych PhD 09:48 - Unlearning People-Pleasing & Evangelical Expectations 12:50 - Is Creating Art "Selfish"? 15:15 - Finding Peace After Leaving the Grind 17:07 - Why a Psychologist Decided to be Selfishly Creative 19:11 - Using Fear as a Guiding Light in Life 🔔 Subscribe to Her Cringe Clinic for more honest conversations on psychology, identity, and finding meaning. 🖤 Hosted by Dr. Seohyun Joo #HerCringeClinic #FromPreMedToNovelist #KoreanAmerican #QueerWriters #CareerChange #Psychology #AsianAmericanStories #WritingCommunity
