  • 8. Are Primitive Reflexes Really to Blame? Busting Baby Development Myths with SLP & Feeding Expert, Bri Miluk

    8. Are Primitive Reflexes Really to Blame? Busting Baby Development Myths with SLP & Feeding Expert, Bri Miluk

Today we’re diving into one of the most misunderstood & controversial topics circulating on social media right now — primitive reflexes. I’m joined by Bri Miluk, a speech-language pathologist who specializes in infant and medically complex feeding and is the face behind @pediatricfeedingslp. In this first episode of our two-part conversation, Bri and I unpack what primitive reflexes actually are, what purpose they serve, and why there’s so much misinformation online about them. We start by defining primitive reflexes — are they real? What role do they play in your baby’s early development? We’ll talk through common reflexes you’ve probably noticed, how they support survival at birth, and how they naturally integrate as your baby grows. Bri and I also explore what happens when these reflexes don’t integrate or fail to emerge, and what that might mean for your child’s development. We discuss why parents should be cautious when it comes to “retained primitive reflex” content on social media, especially when it comes to testing and treatment claims that aren’t supported by research. Bri shares her expert insight on the risks of non-evidence-based interventions, how to assess whether a treatment plan is legitimate, and the importance of task-specific, functional movement when supporting your child’s development. If you’ve ever come across posts claiming your child’s challenges are due to “retained primitive reflexes,” this episode will help you understand what’s really happening beneath the surface — and empower you to ask the right questions before pursuing any intervention. Reflections on resilience, freedom & identity from the book In Order to Live

Send us Fan Mail In this episode, I reflect on In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park and the deep questions it raised for me about freedom, identity, resilience, and what it means to think for ourselves. The book prompted powerful reflections on how we understand our own stories, how we support our children’s sense of self, and how freedom can feel both expansive and exhausting. I also connect the book’s themes to parenting, especially around giving children room to explore who they are, make mistakes, ask questions, and develop their own identity. For parents, this episode is an invitation to pause and reflect on the mental load we carry, the freedoms we have, and the space we create for our children to become themselves. Reflections for this week: What parts of your story have you kept private, and what might change if you shared them with the right person or community? In what ways are you helping your child build an identity that feels like their own?Are you giving your child enough freedom to make mistakes, get curious, and think for themselves? If someone asked you, “Who are you?” beyond your roles and titles, how would you answer?See you inside our Book Club (it is only $10 for the entire year!) Carb Cycling: Is This Weight Loss Strategy for YOU?

The term “carb cycling” has been trending for several years now, and yet there is still so much confusion surrounding what it actually is and how to do it correctly. Carb cycling may seem fancy, but it is a pretty simple concept: you eat more carbohydrates on some days and fewer carbohydrates on other days.  As with any nutrition strategy, carb cycling is not “magic.” It’s a tool in the toolbox of techniques that can be used to achieve a desired result.  The big questions everybody wants to know: will carb cycling work for me and how on earth do you implement carb cycling? I answer all of these and more in today’s episode.  Thank you for tuning in! I’d love to chat more about this topic and other nutrition questions you have over on Instagram (@rachelmeigsking)! In this episode, we cover: What carb cycling is and what it is not How to implement carb cycling How to know if carb cycling is right for you LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN TODAY’S EPISODE: Connect with me on Instagram: @rachelmeigsking Are you looking to improve your relationship with food and end the yo-yo, constant dieting and make the changes you need while being able to fully live your life? Join me over in my free Facebook community: Heart, Soul, Mind, & Body Wellness MORE ABOUT FEED YOURSELF: HEALTHY HABITS FOR THE MIND, BODY, & SOUL PODCAST: Feed Yourself: Healthy Habits for the Mind, Body, & Soul is all about learning the key components of overall health based on Biblical principles. When most people think about getting in shape and becoming “healthy”, they immediately think about their physical health: losing weight, making exercise a priority, possessing flexibility and endurance, and remaining disease free. But Scripture makes it clear that physical wellness is not the only area that impacts health. In order to be TRULY healthy, we have to focus on four areas: spiritual health, emotional health, mental health, and physical health.  This podcast dives deep into the tools and head knowledge you will need in order to create lasting results, but it also looks at the element that truly ties it all together - the heart knowledge that incorporates faith in God in this area of our lives and how to apply it when things get tough (and they will!). I wanted to create a space to let you know you are never alone on this journey. Through years of experience in doing everything the WRONG way, I am here to share my journey of getting healthy from the inside out - ditching the restriction and diet culture and truly learning to treat my body as the temple God intended it to be.  Grab a cup of coffee and join me as I discuss healthy habits to incorporate in your daily life to propel you forward and FEED YOURSELF on your journey to health in all areas: mind, body, and soul!

The Surprising Things My Picky Eaters Have in Common

What do picky eaters really have in common? I pulled together detailed feeding histories from my own practice because I wanted to know if I was truly seeing a pattern—or simply making feeding struggles more complicated than they needed to be. This is a small clinical snapshot, not a research study. It cannot tell us that one thing caused a child’s picky eating. But when I placed these children’s stories side by side, their eating struggles did not look random. I saw the same clues show up again and again. In this episode, we talk about: Why “picky” may describe what you see, but not explain why it is happening The surprising number of children with certain specific concerns Why constipation, sleep, and mouth breathing can matter at the table Which gender showed up in this small group—and what that may tell us about regulation and sensory needs Why a child’s birth and early feeding story may be an important piece of the puzzle Because if food is the check-engine light, we do not need to guess what is happening underneath. We need to slow down, notice the clues, and ask better questions. Not sure what may be making eating hard for your child right now? Take the Foodology Eating Stage Quiz to learn whether your child is feeling fearful, stuck, curious, or ready for growth—and discover the best next step for where they are today. www.thepickyeaterstest.com
