The Voting Rights Act, last reauthorized by Congress with near-unanimous bipartisan support in 2006, no longer has teeth. Section 5 was gutted in 2013. Section 2 is gone now. What remains is a statute with no enforcement mechanism and no path to sue. The same administration that published what JVL calls snuff films, threatened genocide against the Iranian people, and called political opponents vermin and enemies of the state is now incredulous that political violence has turned in its direction. The shooter, Cole Thomas Allen, a teacher and engineer who checked into the hotel a day before the event with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, found virtually no security in place. He sent a manifesto to family members roughly 10 minutes before the attack, outlining his targets, his rules of engagement, and his reasoning, rooted in rage at the current administration.
