Just The Gist of… Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton died last week at 80, and she may literally be the last universally loved person we’ll ever see. This is the whole story: the girl born in a one-room shack in the Smoky Mountains with no electricity and 11 siblings, who wrote her first song at five, played the Grand Ole Opry at 13, and moved to Nashville the day after she graduated high school (where she met her husband of 60 years at a laundromat, on her first ever go at a washing machine). The Porter Wagoner years, 'Jolene', the resignation letter that became 'I Will Always Love You', '9 to 5', Dollywood, and the quietly enormous philanthropy: the Imagination Library that has given away over 330 million books, the Moderna vaccine money, the children's hospital that now carries her name, and the fact she was secretly a producer on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. Musical genius, business brain, and possibly the most generous person in American entertainment history. Also a great flirt. . JTG MINI: Why is Selena Gomez being sued over her company 'Wondermind'?

Selena Gomez is being sued for fraud. Investors say the mental health startup she founded with her mum, Mandy Teefey, took their millions based on promises that never came true. Based on Selena's massive star power, the company valued at $200 million before it had made a single dollar. But besides a website, what did Wondermind actually DO? (not much, apparently.) This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of Wondermind: the Selena Gomez fraud lawsuit, co-founder Daniella Pierson who Anna Delvey'd her way onto the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and the co-CEO mum who allegedly spent her days in the office sleeping and watching TV. BREAKIN' NOOZ: Why were Sandra Bullock's original daughters from Practical Magic considered too old for the sequel? We do the MATHS.

It's not news, it's NOOZ! In these JTG BONUS eps, Rosie Waterland gives just the gist of the week's most important nonsense. Episodes drop every Tuesday (along with a bunch of other bonus stuff!) for members of The Gistener Club, which you can access via the Just The Gist Patreon right here or through Apple Premium Subscriptions. This week: REST IN RHINESTONES PERFECT QUEEN DOLLY PARTON. Our JTG episode on Dolly is coming this week. IN the meantime, listen to the podcast Dolly Parton's America here. Lots of MAFS news, including drug testing and alcohol limits that they prooooobably should've been doing the whole time but also... might make the dinner parties a lot less entertaining? NOT SO! John Aitken assured viewers in an interview this week that they have dived further into the casting gutter this year and really focussed on finding dudes on Tiktok with offensive views. Fantastic! Practical Magic 2 premiered this week and the actors playing Sandra Bullock's daughters have been recast with much younger women. Evan Rachel Wood, who played the older daughter in the 1998 original, has made her disappointment clear. And since the sequel is set '25 years after the events of the first film', why weren't the original daughters cast? Evan i a brilliant and successful actress who said she was desperate to do it. And she and Sandy B still have the same age difference as they did back in 1998, because, you know, that's how ageing works. So... what's the go? Why cast actresses a decade younger? Could it be that Sandra and Nicole didn't want to play the mum and aunt of a 39 and 36 year old? I do some SERIOUS MATHS to break down the numbers. Harvard Medical School agreed to pay $53million this week, after it was found the manager of their morgue had been stealing and selling body parts. To... the most random and disturbing buyers. The New York Times story is here and Harvard's statement is here. Other random stuff! Reccos! Rosie: The podcast 'Corporate Gossip' James: The book 'Very Impressive For Your Age' by Elenor Kirk .. Just The Gist of... The Billionaire Boys Club

"Tape mouth. Handcuff. Explain situation." When police finally searched missing conman Ron Levin's Beverly Hills mansion in 1984, they found a seven-page murder to-do list, left behind on the killer's own personalised letterhead, signature doodled all over it. The killer was Joe Hunt, the 24-year-old leader of the Billionaire Boys Club, an LA investment group made up of the rich, bored, freshly graduated sons of men they could never hope to impress. Hunt promised them a genius trading formula that couldn't fail. What he actually built was a Ponzi scheme, a pseudo-intellectual bro cult, and eventually two murders in which almost nobody involved had any actual money. This is the story of the scammer who got scammed, and possibly the only murderer in history to bring a to-do list. This is Just The Gist of the Billionaire Boys Club: Joe Hunt, the murder of Ron Levin, the fake $5 million trading account, the 1987 Judd Nelson miniseries, and the Kevin Spacey movie that made $618 on its opening weekend. . JTG MINI: There’s a new ‘luxury’ bag on the market - made of T-Rex leather.

“Move over Birkin. Watch out Chanel. There’s a new apex predator.” OF LUXURY GOODS. A luxury bag made of T-rex leather was unveiled earlier this year at Amsterdam Art Zoo Museum. The leather was made by taking some collagen remnants found in a 68-million-year-old T-Rex femur bone, and smooshing them with some cells to grow T-Rex skin. That skin was then turned into leather, dyed a bluish-grey and ‘crafted’ into a luxury handbag. Experts are predicting it will sell for the amount of ‘ten Birkin Bags’. But complex science had to be part of making this happen, so was any of this (at all… even a little) for scientific benefit? Or medical research and development?  Lol no. IT’S ALL ABOUT CAPITALISM BÉBÉ. The luxury industry is apparently freaking out that billionaires aren’t as interested in the usual ‘luxury goods’ anymore, because they hate that the normies (AKA the poors AKA you and me) can access the same stuff. (See last week’s JTG MINI on the Hermes Birkin.) And what’s the point of buying a thing if all the plebs can buy it too? That kind of consumption is not special enough for billionaires. Enter: Dinosaur Leather. We have officially reached the kind of dystopian future where rich ladies are sick of Birkin and are looking for the kind of exclusivity that can only come from buying the resurrected skin of a dinosaur. Try and buy a fake version of THAT in Bali you bogans! We give you Just The Gist, but if you want more, there's Breakin' Nooz, JTG After Show AND Bonus eps! BREAKIN' NOOZ: Harry and Meghan totally want to go down the Titanic slide at that UK farm.

This week: Harry and Meghan are doing whatever the opposite of Megxit is! Megtrancing? Megtrance? Meturning? I'm sure the Daily Mail will come up with something. Here's The Guardian article we talk about. Speaking of things people in the UK are mad about, the 'Graveley Fruit Farm' in Hertfordshire built a giant Titanic slide that rises up then sends kids plummeting down towards a crashpad at the bottom. People are mad and say it's disrespectful to those who died in Titanic's sinking. Rosie Waterland, the only person (besides Carlo Ritchie) with the authority to decide if we as a society are collectively okay with this, says LET THE CHILDREN RIDE. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo news: Pumpkin (AKA Lauren AKE the one who wase 'never the same' after 'her brain got cooked' when she got struck by lightening through the Nintendo) has started doing Only Fans in April to support her four kids, plus Alana, who she has custody of. Within a month, she had made half a million bucks, and is now making $10-$15K a day. She's paid off her mortgage, is completely debt free and saving for the future. Daryl Somers did an interview with Australia's most relevant media publication, Woman's Day, to announce he's doing a Kyle Sandilands and bringing back Hey Hey It's Saturday on a paid subscription platform. Someone needs to tell him YouTube exists. Only Fans would work too, actually. The Australian Dept. of Births, Deaths and Marriages has a list of 89 names we aren't allowed to call our kids. You best believe we go through every single one. Top sheets vs no top sheets - this week's favourite filler topic on every news show. JTG MINI: The weird process of buying a Birkin Bag (AKA 'The Hermès Game')

You can walk into an Hermès store with 20 grand in cash, ask for a Birkin bag, and they will say no. Because Hermès doesn't sell you the world's most coveted handbag, Hermès decides if you DESERVE one. Hopeful customers spend years (and tens of thousands of dollars) buying scarves, blankets and homewares first, stuff Hermès clients literally call 'garbage', all in the hope of one day being invited to spend another 15 grand on a bag. It's called The Hermès Game, and thousands of people are playing it right now. This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of The Hermès Game: Jane Birkin and the sketch on an Air France sick bag, quota bags and the pre-spend, the 10.1 million dollar original Birkin, and the sales associates who insist there are no bags in the back (there are bags in the back). . Just The Gist of... The Lindsay Clancy Case

The Lindsay Clancy case is the story everyone seems to be talking about right now. But if you haven’t been following Lindsay Clancy’s story from the start, it’s a hard one to catch up on, so this episode breaks it all down and gives you just the gist of what you need to know.  In January 2023, after months of desperately trying to get help for her declining mental health, Lindsay Clancy took the lives of her three young children, and ended up paralysed in an attempt to take her own. She was charged with murder, and has been in custody in a psychiatric facility ever since. Her trial began in July 2026, with Lindsay’s legal team arguing she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and is not criminally responsible. The prosecution is arguing the killings were planned. Her husband (who was tragically the one to find Lindsay and their children Cora, Dawson and Callan back in 2023) has since divorced her and remarried, but has made it very clear that he forgives her, saying: “I wasn’t married to a monster. I was married to someone who got sick.”  Lindsay Clancy’s story has triggered a long overdue and much needed conversation about the inadequacy of not just women's healthcare, but maternal and postpartum healthcare in particular. But thanks to the trial being televised live, this case has also triggered a major conspiracy rabbit hole online, with increasingly bizarre theories being thrown around as each day passes.
