    The Vegetable Man: The West Virginia Creature Said to Drain Blood Through Its Fingers

    In mid-July 1968, Jennings H. Frederick reportedly returned from an unsuccessful groundhog hunt near Grant Town in Marion County, West Virginia, when he stopped beneath maple trees and heard rapid, high-pitched speech. According to the account Gray Barker published years later, Frederick could not tell whether the message was audible or somehow perceived mentally. Barker rendered it as a plea for medical assistance and an assurance of peaceful intentions. Then Frederick said he felt pain in his arm. He initially believed briars had caught him.
