Emergency Response Rooms and Collective Action in Sudan

In this youth roundtable, Catherine Nzuki, Associate Fellow with the CSIS Africa Program, is joined by two Sudanese scholars to discuss Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, a grassroots network of young volunteers delivering food, medicine, and essential services across all eighteen states in Sudan. Noaman Mousa is a political science PhD student at UCLA, where his research focuses on civil wars and state-building in Sub-Saharan Africa. Yasir Zaidan is an adjunct lecturer at Seattle University and a PhD student at the University of Washington, where his research examines the expanding influence of Middle Eastern states in the Horn of Africa. Together, they trace the ERRs' origins in the neighborhood resistance committees that drove Sudan's 2019 revolution and explore what a day in the life of an ERR volunteer looks like across different regions and frontlines. Yasir and Noaman also reflect on the deepening of ethnic and tribal cleavages in Sudan since the outbreak of war in April 2023, the role of Gulf states in prolonging the conflict, and the difficult question of what a path to peace might look like. Reading Recommendations from Noaman Mousa: The Coup-Civil War Trap, Phil Roessler Ethnic Armies, Kristen Harkness Warlord Politics and African States, Will Reno Sudan: The Historical Predicament and the Horizons of the Future, Muhammad Abu al-Qasim Hajj Hamad (in Arabic, currently under translation by Prof. Alden Young). Reading Recommendations from Yasir Zaidan: Sudan: The Historical Predicament and the Horizons of the Future, Muhammad Abu al-Qasim Hajj Hamad (in Arabic, currently under translation by Prof. Alden Young).

Zohran's Electric Finish: Dance Diplomacy, PinkPantheress, & Surging Polls in NYC Mayoral Race

Zohran Mamdani BioSnap a weekly updated Biography. Zohran Mamdani is everywhere in New York this week, with the mayoral candidate’s campaign entering its final electric days before the November 4 election. On Friday, Mamdani was spotted at the Essex Cross Community Center in Lower Manhattan not for a policy talk but partaking in tai chi and dancing alongside neighborhood residents. According to Dawn News English, the event showed the lighter side of the 34-year-old democratic socialist, who once went by Young Cardamom as a rapper, now blending joie de vivre and grassroots politics. With betting markets like Polymarket putting his odds of victory at a staggering 95 percent, confidence in his chances is sky-high among political insiders and observers alike. For those tracking celebrity moments, the Brooklyn Eagle reports that Mamdani popped up for a cameo at the PinkPantheress tour kickoff at Kings Theatre, bringing a splash of political star power to Brooklyn’s concert scene. Social media is buzzing with clips from that appearance and from lively rallies, where Mamdani has become known for whipping up crowds with fiery speeches and effortless banter. At a massive gathering in Forest Hills Stadium on October 26, Mamdani’s name echoed through the air as supporters celebrated a campaign that has defied establishment skepticism from day one. There, movement leaders described the campaign as history in the making, referencing how Mamdani’s journey from Assembly member to possible mayor has energized a leftist coalition once dismissed as fringe. The event doubled as a rallying cry against billionaire-funded opposition—Michael Bloomberg, Bill Ackman, and Whitney Tilson, to name a few—whose negative ads and fear tactics have failed to slow what The Real News dubbed a ‘stunning blow to the billionaire-backed status quo.’ On the policy front, The Real News notes Mamdani’s coalition-building among working-class, immigrant, Muslim, and Jewish communities, even as he faces Islamophobic rhetoric from far-right elements and renewed attacks from figures like President Donald Trump and ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo, now an independent candidate. Mamdani’s response has been relentless grassroots outreach: his campaign says he’s mobilized over 90000 volunteers citywide. His Instagram and other platforms overflow with testimonials from supporters calling his hope-driven politics an antidote to cynicism and hate. Major headlines include Mamdani’s dance floor diplomacy, his PinkPantheress cameo, and surging polls—each painting the portrait of a mayoral front-runner whose blend of activism and authenticity is captivating a restless New York. No major verified scandals, official controversies, or policy walkbacks have surfaced in credible outlets these past several days. If anything, the media cycle is keeping pace with a campaign that looks poised to rewrite what’s possible in New York City politics. Beyond Aid: Redefining Africa’s Development

The international development and humanitarian landscape in Africa is at an inflection point, driven by a convergence of severe funding cuts,  escalated climate and conflict-related crisis, and a necessary, but challenging shift from donor-led relief to locally led, long-term development. The current aid architecture was built for a different era, and this moment of disruption presents an opportunity to reimagine a system that is more effective, sustainable, and built on local partnerships and resilience. Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, CEO of Mercy Corps, and Noam Unger, Vice-President of the Global Development department at CSIS, join Oge to assess the current state of the international development and humanitarian assistance landscape and explore what challenges and opportunities this moment presents for  Africa’s future. Note: Into Africa will be taking a short break and will return in the next few months!

    Nigeria: Religion, Power, and Peacebuilding

Late last year, the U.S redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, a move that reignited fierce global debate and intensified an already complex moment in U.S.–Nigeria relations. U.S. military air strikes on Christmas that targeted an ISIS-affiliated terrorist group in northwest Nigeria, which the U.S. accused of persecuting Christians, further illustrates these complicated and evolving dynamics. What does this CPC redesignation mean for the millions of people living in Nigeria? Is this a necessary wake-up call for accountability or a surface-level solution to a deeply rooted complex crisis of political power and security? In this episode, Oge is joined by Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja and Dr. Usman Bugaje, senior adviser to the Sultan of Sokoto, to unpack the nexus of religion, power, and the desperate search for peace in one of the world’s most religiously vibrant countries.

Isaac Larian, entrepreneur: Failure is the foundation for success

“One thing I have learned from my childhood til now is that when you fall, you get up, dust yourself off, and do it over and over again. I’ve had a lot of up and downs in my business life in America. I’ve had many failures and people only talk about successes, but failures in my mind are the foundation of success.” Rahul Tandon speaks to Iranian-American entrepreneur Isaac Larian. The 72-year-old billionaire is the founder and chief executive of US-based MGA Entertainment, one of the world’s largest toy companies. Over the years, he’s been involved in several high-profile toy launches, including the ‘Bratz’ range of dolls back in 2001. But his success today, regularly appearing on rich lists compiled by the likes of Forbes, is a far cry from his early years growing up Tehran, where his family often struggled to put food on the table in a home without electricity or running water. His father ran a small textile shop that a young Larian would work in, buying and selling stock. And at the age of just 17, Larian took this business experience with him when he bought a one-way ticket to America to seek his fortune.
