  • Episode 80: How To Strengthen Your Marriage in 15 Minutes (with Marcus Warner and Chris Coursey)

    31/12/2019

    1

Episode 80: How To Strengthen Your Marriage in 15 Minutes (with Marcus Warner and Chris Coursey)

What separates happy marriages from miserable ones? What if we told you that you could have a stronger, healthier, more joy-filled marriage in just 15 minutes a day? Sound too good to be true? Authors Marcus Warner and Chris Coursey have studied relationships (and neuroscience) and discovered the joy gap - a length of time between moments of shared joy. When the joy gap gets bigger, problems are more likely to overwhelm you, resentment creeps in, and you start to feel distant and alone in your marriage. When the joy gap is smaller, you regularly feel connected, happy, and your marriage is a source of joy.  On Episode 80, Daniel and Christina interview Marcus Warner and Chris Coursey (co-authors of The 4 Habits of Joy-Filled Marriages) about how 15 minutes a day, and brain science hacks, can boost your emotional, spiritual, and physical connection with your spouse.  In This Episode, You Will Hear About: How 15 minutes a day will help you stay in love The connection between brain science and having joy in your marriage What the joy gap is, why it matters, and how to shrink it Learn how to return to joy more quickly after disconnection 4 habits that shrink the joy gap: Play together Listening for emotion Appreciate daily Nuture a rhythm  Resources Mentioned During the Episode: Grab your copy of Marcus Warner and Chris Coursey's book The 4 Habits of Joy-Filled Marriages: How 15 Minutes a Day Will Help You Stay in Love Wanting to hear more about how to stay in love? Maybe it doesn’t even matter whether couples agree or disagree. Maybe the important thing is how you pay attention to each other, no matter what your spouse is talking about or doing. @gottmaninst Simply put, successful couples are attentive. They listen, and they put their phones down when the other person wants to chat. @gottmaninst Gottman found when couples break up, it’s usually not because of issues like big fights or infidelity. More often, it’s a result of the resentment and distance that builds up over time when partners continually turn away from bids for connection.@gottmaninst Seek to understand the situation and your spouse's feelings. @imbetweenshow Assumicide is when we incorrectly believe we know another person’s thoughts, feelings, and motivations. We assume we understand why they are behaving in a particular way, and then we respond without asking clarifying questions. @enneagram_coach Subscribe and Connect With Us: Apple Podcasts Stitcher Google Play Spotify Instagram - @imbetweenshow Twitter - @imbetweenshow Facebook - @imbetweenshow And don't forget to subscribe to our podcast, so that you will never miss an episode! This is the time to look back over the past twelve months and all that's happened thus far. Plus, winter poorly baby worries (we're talking rash anxiety, guys), winter colds and flu's and hyper-panicked visits to A&E (oh, we've all been there). But on the other (dafter) side, juicy boots, Christmas party mornings-afters and how best to pronounce Petit Filou. Seriously.

“Becoming Dads Overnight Changed Everything" Matthew & Ryan Mackinnon on Adoption, Guilt & the Reality No One Talks About!

This week on Mum’s The Word, Kelsey Parker is joined by Matthew and Ryan Mackinnon, the couple behind the podcast Daddies Overnight, and their story is unlike anything we’ve heard before. From building a life together online to suddenly becoming parents through adoption, Matthew and Ryan open up about what it really means to become dads overnight… and why nothing could have prepared them for it. They share the honest reality of choosing adoption over surrogacy, the unexpected challenges that come with both, and the moment that completely changed their perspective on becoming parents. From misconceptions about adoption to the emotional weight of the process, this is a side of parenthood that isn’t talked about enough. Kelsey also dives into the emotional complexities of fostering and adoption, including the guilt, the gratitude, and the heartbreaking reality of taking a child from a foster family who loved them deeply. Plus, the trio talk about life now as parents, from surprisingly perfect sleep routines (yes, really) to the moments that make it all worth it, and whether they’d ever do it all again. Expect laughter, honesty, and a powerful reminder that there’s no “normal” path into parenthood. Grab a cuppa, get comfy, and join Kelsey, Matthew and Ryan for this eye-opening episode of Mum’s The Word. A Create Podcast Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

#93: Your Teenager Isn’t Lazy And That Lack of Motivation Isn’t What You Think (with Dr. Adam Price)

If you’ve ever had the thought, “Why can’t he/she just put forth the tiniest bit of effort in school?”, then today’s episode is for you. You are not the only one dealing with this – actually, quite far from it. And there’s a really good reason for this phenomenon, which usually occurs more with boys than girls. In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Adam Price, clinical psychologist and author of the book, He’s Not Lazy: Empowering Your Son to Believe in Himself and it’s an eye-opening conversation to say the least. Dr. Price explains why boys (and plenty of girls) just “opt out” or stop trying in school. If you struggle with your teen to get them to do their homework, study for tests and make decent grades, you really must listen (you’ll come away with a solid plan for moving forward with your teen.)
