Smash 2.16: The Nominations

The first of two episodes that serve as the series finale. The forced tension among everyone is only outdone by the fake tension of the announcement of the Tony nominations. Spoiler alert: they all get nominated. This episode at least does a pretty good job of teeing up the finale.

Smash: 2.15: The Transfer

It is unclear whether this was supposed to be the second season finale. After all, season 1 only had 15 episodes, too. We're not sure if that makes the issues in the episode worse or not as bad. Ranging from more break-neck pacing issues to once again pitting the women against each other, not to mention a convoluted pregnancy plot, this episode only shines in that it wasn't nearly as bad as the one that came before it.

Smash 2.14: The Phenomenon

We thought it couldn't get worse, but guess what? It gets worse. This whole episode feels like the cast is cosplaying Jonathan Larson's death, except this is supposed to be about Kyle. The problem with that is the episode ends up being about almost anything other than Kyle's death. Not to mention that Kyle was never developed enough to make the death meaningful.

Smash 2.13: The Producers

Oh, how far we've fallen. After being led into a false sense of security, Smash comes right back and hits us in the face with truly awful reality. The first half of this episode wasn't exactly terrible, and like the rest of the show, it had an interesting premise. But then we get the return of the terrible music video, which is then coupled with an overly dramatic so-called cliffhanger. They are not paying homage to Rent and Jonathan Larson. They are straight up shouting at the top of their lungs, "Hey, look at us, we're just like Rent!" FYI, no they're not.

Smash 2.12: Opening Night Part 2

Bombshell's opening night after party is marred by Jimmy's confrontation with his brother; Karen and Ivy sing a duet of Sinatra's That's Life; Derek and Scott muse on the idea of sending Hit List to Broadway. Tom flails as an opportunity to showcase his directing skills falls through. Not a bad episode, but nothing to write home about.

Smash 2.12: Opening Night Part 1

Bombshell finally gets its opening night while Tom and Julia navigate their professional relationship. Karen confronts Jimmy about his past, and Derek and Scott consider transferring Hit List to Broadway. It's a bit of a letdown after last week's episode, but it's still making progress from earlier in the season. We only hope it doesn't start to slip.

Smash 2.11: The Dress Rehearsal

Against our better judgement, we're going to admit it. This was a good episode. The conflict made sense, the timing was on, and they didn't rely on cheesy tropes or exposition. While there were still some issues we found, most of those boiled down to us being nitpicky. Let's hope it stays this way.

Smash 2.10: The Surprise Party

The show continues to stay on its plateau of "meh but not terrible" as Bombshell moves into tech and Hit List gets a dramaturg. Karen is still flat, Jimmy is still unbearable, and our hopes for Derek were dashed when he became a whiny baby after not getting his way with Karen. The only real saving grace at this point is the relationship between Ivy and Tom. Even a cameo from Liza Minelli wasn't enough to tip this episode enough to call it good.
