Père Marquette (part 2 of 2)

May 18 marks the anniversary of Father Jacques Marquette’s death in 1675. In the Roman Catholic Church, particularly within the Jesuit order, he is memorialized as a dedicated missionary and explorer. Marquette does not have an official universal feast day in the Church because he has not been canonized as a saint. He is currently recognized by the Church as a "Servant of God," meaning a formal cause for his canonization is underway. The Great Lakes and the Upper Mississippi regions were explored by young Jesuit clergyman, such as Jacques Marquette, known as ‘God’s Soldiers’ who evangelized indigenous peoples throughout the vast territories of 17th century New France. Ascension Sunday SPECIAL

The Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ commemorates the Christian belief of the bodily Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. It is one of the ecumenical (shared by multiple denominations) feasts of Christian churches, ranking with the feasts of the Passion and Pentecost. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, the fortieth day of Easter according to inclusive counting, although some Christian denominations have moved the observance to the following Sunday, sometimes called Ascension Sunday. The day of observance varies in many Christian denominations, including Catholics, Protestant Anglicans, Lutherans, Moravians, Methodists, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox.
