    Haruki Murakami: Then and Now

Host Meg Wolitzer presents two stories by the extraordinary Japanese writer Haruki Murakami that demonstrate the breadth of his emotional imagination over a career of 35 years.  In an early story, “The Window,” a professional letter-writer recalls an intimate encounter with a woman, and a hamburger steak.  The reader is Mike Doyle.  In the later story, “Kahu,” read by Jennifer Ikeda, a woman goes on a blind date, only to be blindsided. Both stories were recorded at the Japan Society in New York City, as part of an ongoing collaboration with Selected Shorts. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Host Meg Wolitzer presents three works about idealized lives, and ideas about what constitutes an “ideal” life.  “Boy Meets Girl” is Jen Kim’s humorous version of a Hollywood love story.  It’s read by Tony Hale.  In the John Cheever classic “The Worm in the Apple” a couple have the perfect life—but no one can believe it.  It’s read by Anne Meara.  And a harried mother fantasizes about a brand new life in Vanessa Cuti’s “Our Children,” performed by Claire Danes, followed by an interview with Danes. .

Judge a Book by Its First Lines: Hooked or Hard Pass?

Can you really tell if a book is worth reading from the very first lines? In this episode of Reading Under the Covers Podcast, we put that question to the test with a chaotic, fun, and surprisingly revealing game of Hooked or Hard Pass. We each brought a stack of books, read the opening lines out loud without showing the cover or revealing the title, and decided on the spot whether we were intrigued, unsure, or totally out. This round featured a deliciously unexpected mix: gothic and eerie classics versus monster romance. Along the way, we reacted in real time to poetic openings, overly long introductions, playful prose, immersive worldbuilding, and first paragraphs that absolutely did not do their job. Watch the video: https://youtube.com/live/GHSUrOq2bp8?feature=share In this episode, we talk about: whether first lines really matterthe difference between a strong hook and an info dumpwhich openings made us immediately want morewhich books landed in the “maybe” pilewhich ones were an instant passwhy some genres can get away with more than othersthe books we ended up most curious to keep reading Expect honest reactions, a little chaos, lots of laughter, and plenty of bookish opinions. Books mentioned include: Dante’s InfernoHell ScreenOf Ghosts and GoblinsI Oops! Summoned a LeaderOrc’s SweetheartThe Wick DemonMy Summer Girland more. Were we too harsh, or do first lines really make or break a book for you? Let us know: which opening would have hooked you, and which one would you have passed on? Narrative Poems: ‘Paradise Lost’ (Book 9) by John Milton

When Milton came to describe Eve’s tasting of the forbidden fruit, he knew he couldn’t rely on suspense to grip the reader. Instead, he used multiple genres and perspectives to interrogate the moral and emotional significance of ‘man’s first disobedience’, self-consciously drawing on the resources of Renaissance tragedy, pastoral and love poetry to achieve his great innovation, the Christian epic. In this episode, Seamus and Mark look at the ways in which Milton’s study of temptation and free will became an unparalleled expression of poetic brilliance, from its thrillingly ambiguous and seductive depiction of Satan to its vivid dramatisation of the reproachful lovers confronting the consequences of their misdeeds, and ultimately its claim to being the finest love poem in English. This House of Grief: Helen Garner on Empathy, Guilt & Writing Through The Unthinkable

What does it mean to truly bear witness – especially to something that defies comprehension?  This month on the Service95 Book Club, Dua is joined by legendary Australian writer Helen Garner to discuss This House Of Grief – a haunting account of a father on trial for the murder of his three young sons. The book is part true crime, part literary reportage, and wholly unflinching. As Dua says, it has the pace of a thriller, but it also forces us to ask the most uncomfortable questions about love, justice, and the limits of empathy.  Together, Dua and Helen reflect on the power of literature to confront our darkest instincts, and the courage it takes to look – and not look away.  Buy the book at Bookshop.org, Waterstones, and Barnes & Noble   Get in touch:   📩 Email us – books@service95.com   📲 Follow @service95bookclub on Instagram for updates   📚 Subscribe to the Service95 Book Club newsletter – introduced each month by Dua – at www.service95.com   And don’t forget to hit subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.  Learn more about your ad choices.
