The Reason Healthy Habits Fail, Food Guilt & Nervous Systems

This week we’re unpacking why knowing what’s healthy and actually doing it can feel like two completely different things. From all-or-nothing eating patterns to wellness overwhelm and habit burnout, we explore why sustainable health is often much more about nervous system support, flexibility and consistency than perfection. We also discuss food guilt, sugar cravings, breathwork for beginners, kefir versus yogurt, sustainable omega-3s and how to build habits that genuinely support your mood and energy without becoming restrictive or performative. Plus, we share thoughts on puzzles, bees, burnout, friendship and the surprisingly confronting “Four Burners Theory.” Recommendations: Listener Julia recommends The History of Bees by Maja Lunde, a beautiful work of fiction that weaves together three storylines across different time periods — all connected through bees and what their disappearance means for humanity. Matthew Hussey: The #1 Dating Mistake Keeping You Stuck (Focus On THIS Over Chemistry and Build a Lasting Relationship)

In this live conversation, Jay sits down at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas with Matthew Hussey for an honest and refreshing discussion about modern love, dating, and relationships. Together, they unpack why dating feels so exhausting today, how we confuse chemistry with emotional chaos, and why real connection is often quieter, steadier, and healthier than we expect. Their conversation challenges the idea of “finding the one” and instead reminds us that great relationships are something we build over time through trust, consistency, and emotional maturity. From setting healthy standards to learning how to communicate your needs without fear, this episode is full of relatable insights for anyone navigating love in today’s world. Jay and Matthew also explore the importance of self-worth, emotional safety, and trusting yourself enough to walk away from relationships that no longer serve you. It’s a thoughtful reminder that love shouldn’t make you lose yourself, and that the right relationship should help you feel more like yourself than ever before. In this episode, you'll learn: How to Stop Chasing Chemistry How to Set Healthy Standards How to Communicate Your Needs Clearly  How to Trust Yourself Again How to Date Without Losing Yourself How to Break Toxic Dating Patterns How to Create a Strong Relationship The right relationship will never require you to abandon yourself, shrink your needs, or constantly prove your worth. Real love grows through honesty, patience, consistency, and the courage to stay true to who you are. Listen to the Love Life with Matthew Hussey podcast for more modern dating tips. why you’re obsessed with people who can’t love you back

This episode examines limerence not as a personality flaw or a trendy attachment term, but as a learned psychological strategy that begins in childhood. Rather than treating obsession as irrational, we explore how it develops as a way to survive inconsistent, misattuned, or emotionally absent parenting, and how that same strategy later shows up in adult relationships. This phenomenon explains why so many of us become fixated on emotionally unavailable partners and why the end of even a short relationship (or even a situationship) can feel devastating in a way that doesn’t match the actual reality of the situation. It’s why obsession often gets mislabeled as “love” or “passion.” We look at how the mind uses fantasy and idealization to stabilize itself and why emotionally unavailable people reliably trigger these patterns. What This Episode Covers What limerence actually is (and what it isn’t)Why obsession often forms around people you barely knowHow childhood coping strategies turn into adult romantic fixationThe role of emotional unavailability and intermittent reinforcementWhy intensity gets confused with intimacy and “fate”How fantasy and projection stabilize the nervous systemThe overlooked spiritual dimension of limerence and devotionWhat it means to finally step out of the pattern without self-blame UNLOCK BONUS EPISODES, VOICE NOTES & THE FULL ARCHIVE Join the BFTB Patreon community and become a Premium Submarine, where you’ll unlock hundreds of hours of paywalled content I’ve been building since 2021. ⟁ Visit backfromtheborderline.com for free resources, updates, and everything else I offer. ⟁ Or go straight to patreon.com/backfromtheborderline to join now. 424. How to ACTUALLY change your bad habits ft. Harvard Behavioural Scientist, Julia Dhar

We all have something about our behaviour or our lives we really want to change. But every time we go to try, we find we lose motivation very quickly and end up back where we started with the behaviour still in tact. Whether it's quitting smoking, exercising more, wanting to eat healthier, sleep better, stop gossiping, be a better partner; bad habits usually all have the same psychology.  In today's episode we invited on Harvard-trained behavioural scientist & BCG Managing Director, Julia Dhar, to give us the step by step guide to changing bad habits. We talk about:  Where bad habits come from?  Why bad habits stick? What's happening in our brain when we can't quit a bad habit? The 3 principles of behaviour change you need to know to change  How to help OTHERS change when they don't want to? Why your approach to failing will determine if you're successful  Plus much more!  Happy listening!  Buy Julia's book here: How Change Really Works Watch her TedTalk here: How to Disagree Productively  Watch on Netflix: HERE Follow Jemma on Instagram: @jemmasbeg Follow the podcast on Instagram: @thatpsychologypodcast Subscribe on Substack: @thepsychologyofyour20s For business: psychologyofyour20s@gmail.com    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
