Musician (and friend) Sinéad White, is about to have her first baby. By the time this podcast comes out, all going well, there’ll be a new baby boy or girl in the world. Her partner knows the gender, she doesn’t, so that’s also adding to the suspense in the room. (If you listen to the update at the end of the podcast, you can find out too! And the cutest name ever!) All around her home there’s signs of something happening. In her bathroom, there’s a tiny baby bath placed in the shower. In the hallway, there’s a second hand freezer, with a list attached of all the pre-made meals inside that her and her partner Kieran have been preparing over the last few weeks. The energy and excitement in the house is palpable and it’s truly heartwarming to see. When I ask about her pregnancy and if it went well, she’s almost embarrassed to tell me that it was really easy. “The experience has really made me a lot more sensitive to how much other people might be going through, even in terms of, say, fertility or babies. Everything behind the scenes that you've no clue about.” She almost feels a tad guilty for having such a lovely time while pregnant, but as her friend, it’s joyous to see. Sinéad has wanted a family for so long. She has not gone without her own struggles, ideally she would have loved to have started earlier (she’s 36), but life got a bit bumpy, as it does. It’s so very on brand for her that even now, at a time that should be all about her, she’s still considering the feelings of others. Come back tomorrow for another podcast/story/portrait.
